Chiefs Fans Should Do The Unthinkable:

Root For Denver

Rant of the Day

Before you circulate the petition to ban me from A-One, hear me out. I hate the Broncos more than most people, my favorite Super Bowl was the 43-8 drubbing that the Seahawks gave the Dirty Donkeys. I hate Denver for keeping a piece of trash like Aqib “Eye-Poke” Talib on the field. I hate them for all the late hits, trips and general predilection towards winning the game by breaking the rules just enough to avoid penalties. That said, I love the Chiefs more than I hate Elway’s work-release gang of orange-clad thugs and a couple Denver wins before the end of the year would be a very good thing for the Chiefs.

The Patriots showed on Monday Night just how tough it is to beat them in Foxborough. If Chiefs could play them in Arrowhead, it would level the playing field considerably. The only chance of that happening involves two Patriots losses before the end of the season. Unfortunately, their remaining games are two road games against Denver and Miami (who may be without their starting QB) and one home game against the Jets. Not exactly murderer’s row. That Jets’ game is pretty much a guaranteed win for the Patriots, so the Chiefs would need both Denver and Miami to win if they want to play NE in Arrowhead. In that scenario, the Chiefs would also have to win the rest of their games.

What if Chiefs can’t win the rest of their games though? The Titans game has come at a really bad time. Kansas City will be facing the league’s #3 rushing attack without Derrick Johnson. The Tennessee Titans just narrowly defeated a Denver team that the Chiefs needed late game heroics to beat. K.C. may need the offense to carry the defense and that’s not something they’re very good at. If Kansas City does lose to the Tennessee, they’d need Oakland to lose at least one game for Chiefs to win the division. The Raiders play at San Diego, at Denver and at home against Indy. Looking at those three teams, it’s pretty clear that the one with the best shot of beating them would have to be Denver. The Chargers aren’t awful, but they are injury riddled and playing for nothing. The Colts have been an over-achieving bad team for quite a while now. If the Chiefs drop one game, they might need Denver to get it back from Oakland.

The biggest reason to root for Denver though is the simple fact that they have almost no chance of making the playoffs, and every win drops their draft position. Denver is quickly progressing towards cap hell, where good players go to other teams. A few good draft picks could help them a lot. If they missed out on a great player by a spot or two because they beat Oakland and the Patriots, happy birthday to the Chiefs.

There you have it guys. Three really solid reasons to root for Denver two of the next three weeks. I don’t like it anymore than you do, but it just makes sense. Go ahead and give it to me in the comments section.

Bonus Rant

I know what some of you are thinking. ‘We don’t want help. We want to beat the best teams on the biggest stage. That’s how you get respect.’ To that I say: nope. Respect doesn’t matter anymore. In the days of old media where ESPN was pretty much all there was, you wanted your team to get some national attention so you could actually hear more about what was going on with the team. The internet provides you with up to the minute info that makes ESPN’s coverage look like black and white TV. The average fan of the Chiefs knows more about them than the average anchor at ESPN. They were showing the Chiefs no love leading up to the Raiders game. In fact, they dropped Chiefs a spot in their power rankings after they BEAT the Broncos. Announcers loved to talk about the Raiders and tout how they had arrived. None of it mattered when Chiefs took the field and stifled Raiders formerly prolific offense. “Winning isn’t everything it’s the only thing” is a cliche for a reason. Respect, in sports, is for suckers. It breeds arrogance and complacency. Dis-respect just makes victory all the sweeter.

And that’s another heaping helping of my Sizzling Takes. What’s your take?
