Chiefs Release Top WR Jeremy Maclin

In a surprising move, the Kansas City Chiefs released top Wide Receiver, Jeremy Maclin on Friday. Maclin has only played 2 of he five seasons on his contract.

John Dorsey thanked Maclin and Andy Reid complemented him on his approach to the game. Maclin even tweeted his appreciation to the Chiefs.

Maclin had 131 receptions for 1,624 yards and 10 touchdowns in his time with KC. He played in 27 regular season games, missing 5, and 3 post season games. While his regular season yardage was respectable, he seemed to struggle in the postseason.

This is a surprising move, given the status of the rest of the receiving corps. Is Maclin a cap casualty? According to over the cap, he had a $12.4 million cap hit for 2017. By cutting him, the Chiefs save $10 million this year and create $2.4 million of dead money this year, 2018, and 2019.

I hope Reid and Dorsey see something in the rest of the receivers or they won’t hear the end of it later this season.
