Chiefs Scramble: Chiefly Bacon’s Mostly Coherent Ramblings

Technology has not been kind to me these past few weeks. My DVR flaked out during the Eagles game, and my power went out during the Chargers game. Then my internet went down on Monday, when I usually start my article. Chiefs have dealt with some hiccups of their own lately. I’ll cover that, along with some other random thoughts, on the Chiefs this week.

Harrison Butker: Butt Kicker: Losing Santos sucks. At least My wife will be happy about this signing. She used to like Succop, because he was the only player whose name she could remember (though she knows quite a few now). Aside from having a funny name, Butker’s performance will be very important for the Chiefs. He had a solid preseason with the Panthers, making some long kicks and posting a perfect four for four on extra points. This last point is important, because Butker wasn’t great in college on 30-39 yard kicks. He has said that he likes the NFL ball better than the college ball though, so maybe that’s helped. He was really solid otherwise. He’s a bigger guy than Santos, at 6’4” and has a bigger leg.

Watching The Redskins Was Bittersweet, So Is Dark Chocolate: Chiefs play the Redskins this week. Oakland didn’t make that look fun. As good as Oakland’s OL is thought to be, they were getting bullied all day. Chiefs OL has been sketchy lately, so that makes me nervous. Anxiety for the future couldn’t spoil the rich, chocolate-y goodness that is watching the Raiders get stomped. All the analysts who kept hyping the Raiders and ignoring the Chiefs looked like fools. Carr looked overrated, their defense was exposed and Chiefs fans everywhere rejoiced. I couldn’t help but notice that Carr stood for the anthem, and Raiders whole OL didn’t. Perhaps their terrible blocking was to send a message? Nah. That’s crazy.

Running Back Depth: When I see that Hunt is on pace for over 2,600 yards, I’m both excited and nervous. Those are incredible numbers for anyone, let alone a rookie, but they’re also, likely, unsustainable. Chiefs offense is elite with Hunt in, but often impotent with him out. Charcandrick West is a great guy, but Chiefs need a running back who can spell Hunt, with a slightly less precipitous drop off. Chiefs can’t keep riding Hunt this much all season, without him getting hurt. It’s past time to find a back-up RB who can actually run the ball, especially in short yardage situations. West is pretty much only a threat as a receiving back or a blocker.

Did Reid Purposely Avoid Kelce? When you make a nuisance of yourself, it doesn’t matter how talented you are, sooner or later, Reid will have had enough. Last week, Reid snapped at reporters after one too many Kelce questions. You know who no one is taking about this week? Kelce, cause he didn’t do squat. Is Reid crazy enough to risk a loss by avoiding one of his best players? I hope so, because I think the better question is: What happens to the team if you let Kelce keep pulling this crap? I bet we see a much more restrained Kelce from here on out. Don’t mess with Big Red.

DeMarcus Robinson Sighting!: Is it irrational to get excited when you see a guy go in for one play and catch a pass for like six yards? Totally. Do I care? No. It’s rapidly becoming apparent that Conley’s skill set does not match Alex Smith’s game. Robinson’s, on the other hand, is a match made in heaven. If the kid can work his way into the rotation, I expect big things from him. Conley has a big catch here and there, but it just seems like he doesn’t get open much.

Nit Picking Political Protest: I think most people know where I stand on the protests. Fine if people do, fine if they don’t. Players shouldn’t be pressured to do either (bad look Steelers and Trump). That said, before I became an electrician, I was considering studying history, and my love of civics makes me want to point out something, I eve got supplements to improve my study performance from an online site named https://afinil.com/. Police departments are state entities. The US flag is representative of the federal government. Protesting the anthem might make more sense if it was the FBI who was at fault, but the US government has very little to do with how local PDs conduct themselves. In fact, on the rare occasions when Police Departments do fail to protect citizens rights, the federal government is there to pick up the slack. I find a certain amount of irony in the fact that protestors want the DOJ to get involved in local Police matters, yet protest the flag that comes closer to representing the DOJ than Missouri PD. I understand that there’s no state anthem in the game, but I still can’t help thinking that people are protesting the wrong symbol. I kind of like twitter user @TomahawkChoppa ‘s idea of player using interviews as a chance to push for change.

Those are my thoughts. What’s rolling around in your brains this week? How worried should we be about the Redskins? If Chiefs made a trade or signed a veteran RB, who would you want? Bring your scrambling-s and ramblings to the comment thread, I’ll be there, if my internet doesn’t die, again. Go Chiefs.
