Should the Chiefs Sign Colin Kaepernick?

The Chiefs are considering drafting a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft in Philadelphia in three weeks. If that doesn’t happen they will be faced with signing a veteran QB to back up starter Alex Smith. Even if they do draft a QB they may sign a veteran QB anyway because Andy Reid likes to bring 4 QBs to camp and more importantly, he likes to have an experienced veteran in the wings waiting behind his starter. There is an option out there that has gone un-named — as if his name is Voldemort and speaking his name out loud will invoke demon spirits — Colin Kaepernick.

So, should the Chiefs sign Colin Kaepernick? Should the Chiefs sign Colin Kaepernick? Should the Chiefs sign Colin Kaepernick?

I said it three times to ward off those evil spirits… just in case.

That fact is, Colin Kaepernick is plutonium. A lot of fans would rather not have Kaep coming to their city and taking a knee every time the national anthem is played. Pure and simple, fans don’t want to deal with his issues. It’s not that Kaepernick has issues… it’s the issues that Kaepernick has taken to heart, which others either don’t agree with, or don’t care to have mixed-up with, their Sunday afternoon entertainment.

Looking past the prevalent political atmosphere riding roughshod in our current world, Colin Kaepernick is a huge talent. The main reason I’d be in favor of Colin Kaepernick coming to Kansas City is that Andy Reid would be his coach. Kaep had a 25-14 record under Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco. He’s been 3-16 ever since then, so, for Colin Kaepernick, coaching is everything. He’d thrive in Kansas City, not only because Reid knows how to deal with him, but Reid’s West Coast offensive system is well suited to Kaepernick skills.

Colin Kaepernick’s presence on the Chiefs roster may also represent a negative for current QB Alex Smith. More than anything, the Chiefs want Alex Smith to progress and have his best year yet… and lead them to a Super Bowl victory. In a regular progression, a backup QB comes in and pressures a QB to perform better… and hopefully they do. That’s the progression of events in San Francisco until Alex Smith was hurt and Kaep never relinquished his job. That’s the reason why signing Kaep now — even if he says he’s willing to wait two years to start — would not benefit Alex Smith.

Having said all of that. Alex Smith has signed the biggest contract he’s ever going to get and is comfortable in his starting role as the Chiefs QB. He’s a grown man who knows from first-hand experience the business side of the game so it may not matter at all who the Chiefs bring in. If John Dorsey’s goal is to make the Chiefs better at any opportunity, he should sign Colin Kaepernick. From a piece at FOXSports by Nick Schwartz called, “Shannon Sharpe: The team that makes the most sense for Colin Kaepernick is one nobody talks about he reviews what kind of interest teams such as the Jets or the Broncos might have in him then he quotes Sharpe as saying, “The spot that makes the most sense for me when I look at it, going from top to bottom, is the Kansas City Chiefs.

If May 1st rolls around and the Chiefs haven’t drafted a QB or signed one, then they may want to approach Colin Kaepernick about a two-year deal. If he’s willing to learn and wait behind Alex Smith… until Alex is done… then I don’t see the problem in bringing him to Kansas City. I personally don’t like seeing a player kiss his own biceps but Kaepernick’s talents are too pronounced to ignore, especially in a league where quarterbacking is king.

What do you think? Would you like to see Colin Kaepernick be… “taking his talents to Kansas City?”
