Chiefs Training Camp Open Thread: Day Two

Day Two of the Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp practice is upon us and if it is as eventful as day one… we’ll need a day off just to take a breather. So let’s review what happened yesterday.

Everyone was there for the first practice… of wait… but Tamba Hali was not present when practice started and there was no sign of him. It made for an odd beginning to this training camp because of his Twitter tirade over the weekend which mostly focused on his wanting to be on the field more… play more… and that he was the one who was always at practice and so everyone else should be too.

The next surprise was that freshly signed Bryan Witzmann was lining up with the first team OL at left guard. Not Zach Fulton. Not Jah Reid… and certainly not Parker Ehinger — who is on the PUP list to begin camp — so that was an early zinger.

Ramik Wilson lined up next to DJ on the first team defense and that looked right. The real surprise of the day was that the Chiefs… and new GM Brett Veach… made a roster move by trading away Pro Bowl Special Teamer DJ Alexander to Seattle for ILB Kevin Pierre-Louis. Andy Reid pointed out after practice that Seattle has such a good linebacking pair in Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright that Pierre-Louis might be pretty good. and be able to make an impact for the Chiefs.

The second string offense featured Tyler Bray at QB. That was no surprise to me but perhaps a disappointment to the masses. Fans of Patrick Mahomes II shouldn’t worry though, he’ll get some reps with the first team some where along the line during this camp.

After about an hour Tamba Hali showed up on a golf cart. He made a statement afterwards explaining himself and his weekend tweets. Both Eric Berry and Justin Houston said they’d spoken with Tamba and said they have no problems with him and that they knew he meant well.

Well into practice, Eric Berry had the first pick of the day and it was off of Patrick Mahomes.

If you want to read more about day one of camp, Laurels and limitations, Chiefly Bacon and I all re-tweeted the biggest moments of camp and you can read those tweets and comments here.

    Good morning everyone!

    • Laurels and limitations

Morning Mr. Morse. My in-laws came over last night and time got away from us. I’ll try and keep up this a.m. but I gotta find that horse that kicked me first.

      • ladner morse

Thank God you and your horse are here.

Not sure if I’ve scared everyone else off of AO?

        • Laurels and limitations

Naw, people are just taking the off-season off. Except Bert, he’s just being difficult, lol. It’s difficult staying motivated this time of the year and even easier being misled by highlights. Once the season gets underway the masses will return, no worries.

          • Chiefly Bacon

Agreed. Summer is a busy time for most, and there’s very little real Chiefs news to dig in to. Once the pads come on (Sunday), I think people will start to pay more attention.

          • ladner morse

And a good morning to you Sir Bacon! 🙂

          • Chiefly Bacon

Back Atcha! Been a hectic few weeks, but I think things are starting to settle down.

          • ladner morse

            Good. Glad to hear it.

I just had another bid on my house and by next Friday… if this buyer doesn’t back out… we will put a SOLD sign on the house. Keeping fingers crossed and prayer knees bent.

          • Chiefly Bacon

We’ll do the same. Hope this one works out for you!

    • Chiefly Bacon

Better get on his good side. With KPL’s athleticism, Toub could make him a star.

      • ladner morse

True enough… but I’m hoping KPL can contribute at ILB too.

    • Laurels and limitations

I hope this trade works, but I’m having real trouble believing it. I keep seeing people talk up his athleticism and in the same post show him taking bad angles and such. There is just so little information to go on.

      • ladner morse

Yes, but there’s no substitute for the politeness of a handshake!

      • Chiefly Bacon

Everybody talks about him as a coverage LB, because of his size, but I disagree. I think he’s not as instinctual in coverage as you want, but his raw speed and fluidity make him a decent choice for SILB, even though he’s undersized. Let him blaze a trail to his gap, and he might be ok.

        • ladner morse

I’m not so sure about his coverage skills… he could be good but he’s not had enough reps to know for sure. However, I do like his speed and aggression!

        • Laurels and limitations

better than RW though? I understand the churning of the bottom of the roster, it’s just that I have a hard time believing that DJA WAS the bottom of the roster.

It’s one of two things for me. Either the ILB position has something going on that we know nothing about, oooooorrrrrrrr, Veach is just trying on his new shoes. I wonder if the DJA/KPL trade was straight across or if picks were involved.

          • ladner morse

I just hope Veach doesn’t try to put on KPLs shoes cuz they ain’t gonna fit!

          • Laurels and limitations

Veach could use them as flippers.

            Thank you for that!

    • ladner morse

Great! a perfect DAY! And I’m stuck here in Texas!

  • Chiefly Bacon

Really not wild about ditching Moore for Goodley. Moore had some pretty stellar workout numers. Goodley’s numbers were pretty meh. Only impressive one was his broad jump. Feels like a less talented version of Albert Wilson to me. If Chiefs want to move him to RB, I’d approve the move. Otherwise, I’m not thrilled.

    • ladner morse

Did you do a previous write-up about one of those two?

      • Chiefly Bacon

I think at wrote something on Alonzo Moore. Perhaps that’s why I’m a bit more attached. Thing is though, Goodley had a 4.38 20 yard shuttle (a good athlete with his 40 speed would have a 4.1 or so). He also ran a 7.19 3-cone. His 35″ vertical is pretty average for a WR, and doesn’t help assuage concerns about his height (5’10”). He’s fast (4.44 40) and explosive (10’7″ broad jump), but he doesn’t have great hands. That pretty much makes him either a deep threat only, or a screen pass WR.

        • Laurels and limitations

FINALLY!!! I’ve been sayin’ for FOUR years now that what separates KC from the Super Bowl is the lack of the short game.

        • ladner morse

Well…… as someone who is 5’10” and runs the 40 in 18 seconds flat… I am thoroughly and utterly insulted.

          • Chiefly Bacon

I may be 5’11” or so, and I can run decently fast, but I’m quite confident that I would shatter upon contact with the worst player on Chiefs’ depth chart.

          • ladner morse

Hehehe…… we’ll I just turned 65 and had a left knee replacement 3 years ago… so I would shatter at the thought. IOW… you’re my hero!

    • Laurels and limitations

wasn’t Moore injured? thought I read where they designated him to IR or something.

      • Chiefly Bacon

I know Goodley was coming off IR, but hadn’t heard anything about Moore, if you find that somewhere, let me know.

        • Laurels and limitations

I’ll see if I can find it again. We might even have put in the thread yesterday.

I know I’m crazy for thinking this, but I really wish Chiefs would move Albert Wilson to RB. He’s built for it. Plus his passing game skills, while mediocre as a receiver, would be really solid for a RB.

    • ladner morse

That works for me… only so they can be one step closer to cutting him.

    • ladner morse

      I’m guessing…. hmm…. hmm… Jah Reid will get traded.

      • Laurels and limitations

not sure why they would do so, cap room is no longer an issue and both Fulton and Reid are good, flexible position depth as players.

        • ladner morse

Some think the Chiefs will keep 8 OL.

          • Laurels and limitations

that’s a lot, I don’t necessarily agree though. KC’s o-line has stayed pretty healthy the last few years (for the most part) so I don’t see the need to keep 8.

          • Chiefly Bacon

I’d actually be surprised if they didn’t. Fisher, Witzmann, Morse, LDT, Schwartz and Ehinger are locks. You need a back up center, so that’s at least one more player. If Witzmann starts at LG then you need another swing tackle.

I have a question. Why was the new LB picked up from the Seahawks listed as an ILB? He played weakside outside LB his first years at Boston College, then, was switched to the strongside outside LB. With the Seahawks, he was listed on their 2016 depth chart as a weakside outside LB.

    • Laurels and limitations

difference in the 4-3 to a 3-4 perhaps?

      • berttheclock

Over at AP, someone reasoned that D J Alexander was expendable because against the Titans last year, he was ineffective trying to play inside and the reasoning was he would only be used this season on STs. So, the newbie might have more of a chance playing defense even though he has played on STs, as well with the Seahawks.

        • ladner morse

There is no position in Sutton’s defense for the position that KPL played in Seattle. But… they like his athleticism, speed and hitting ability and think they can convert him.

        • Laurels and limitations

yeah, I’ve read a lot of the same thoughts but I’m not sure I agree. I’m thinking more along the lines that Veach believes Toub can develop another DJA with existing guys already on the roster whereas DJA couldn’t be developed into a coverage backer. Problem being, I’m not sure KPL is a coverage backer either. There is just so little tape to go on.

Has anyone seen the very fast (in the past with Baylor) Antwan Goodley, who was just signed. The wide out was an UDFA with the Cowboys, but, cut, picked up by two other teams, both of whom cut him, and was released by the 4th team on an injured settlement. Berry just broke up a pass to Kelce but it would have been a delay of game anyway— LockedOnChiefs (@LockedOnChiefs) July 29, 2017

Does this tweet make sense? Anyone? Anyone?

      • Laurels and limitations

I think it means that if the play was live, the pass would never have happened due to the QB being sacked before the release of the ball.

        • ladner morse

The why was Jones diving for it?

          • Laurels and limitations

“playing through” I would imagine. The same manner in which Bienemy has his backs run into the endzone every time even though they might have been “tackled” when practicing without pads.

Also, Jones is fully aware that this is a finite opportunity to impress….if that ball is in the air, he’s going for it.

hmm, I was under the impression that the team liked his route running. I had zero idea of him as a return guy, good to know.

          • berttheclock

No, wrong again, Maestro. He returned 2 his freshman year and four his junior year.

    • Chiefly Bacon

For PR always look at that 3-cone. Anything under 7 is good for most players. Anything under 6.8 is good fro PR. Chesson ran a 6.7. Hill had a 6.53. DAT looked like he could have been a good PR, but never seemed to catch on there. Did well on KR though. His 3-cone was 6.94.

As for Chesson practicing returning KOs, he returned 6 at Michigan, two his freshman year and four his junior year. His average was 33.7 yards per return for 202 yards and one TD. He never returned punts.

    • Chiefly Bacon

Which is funny, cause looking at his athletic profile, he makes a lot more sense as a PR than a KR. Of course, college players are slower, so maybe that was a factor.
