K.C. Chiefs and the Sunday Sum Up! 6.11.17

Welcome back to the best thing to happen to your Sunday since the Chiefs last suited up to charge the field of Arrowhead stadium! We all remember the wonderful feeling on game day. That special warm feeling that radiates throughout your entire body to produce a perfect sense of happiness and fulfillment. In fact, exactly two months from today we’ll all be getting that warm fuzzy feeling when the Chiefs take on the 49ers at Arrowhead.

The offseason… tends to drain the sense of wonderment leaving us as fans with an empty feeling. A void that we desperately try to fill with any tidbit of news or rumors yet are never satisfied. The offseason… tends to divide fan groups down the middle. Half will grab the red tinted glasses and start drinking Kool-Aid praising every move made by the organization no matter how great or harebrained it may seem. The others will don the guise of a self-described realist and begin to foretell doom and gloom of a season that will be mired in misery and loss.

I hope to inspire a different coalition. I want to bring together the homers and pessimists under one banner. A group of like minded individuals who are optimistic for the future but realistic in their expectations. I will now step down from my soapbox and give you what you actually came here for. Here is your Sunday Sum Up!

As Told By Toub

Dave Toub has made a name for himself as an elite special teams coordinator. Who here can name the previous special teams coordinator off of the top of their heads? Anyone? No one? It was Tom McMahon, I looked it up. Before Toub stepped in the Chiefs special teams unit was adequate. Kick coverage was decent but we suffered many idiotic penalties that only hurt us in the end. Our returns were nothing to write home about. Every once in a great while we would have a great return and start in excellent field position. This was more an exploited fault in coverage than a well executed plan.

What a difference a few years can make. We are now treated to fantastic returns that are a breath away from breaking for the endzone on a weekly basis. Coverage is tight and we routinely pin opposing offenses deep into their own territory.

So, when the man who instrumented the change in culture and coaching comes out and speaks about his unit it would be wise to listen to what he is saying. This week Mr. Toub has done just that. Earlier in the week Dave met with reporters and made a statement.

“We can’t have him (Hill) on kickoff return.” This is saying something huge.

Tyreek Hill had caught 14 kickoffs for 384 yards and took one to the house for a touchdown.

That kind of production does not just get shrugged off. This is saying Hill will see a vastly expanded role on the offense as a receiver and not have the time for kickoff returns.

Toub went on to say, “We’d really like him to be our punt returner. I know Andy has a plan for him and we’ll just follow Andy’s plan.”

This only confirms the thoughts that Hill will take over the #1 wide receiver duties and will begin to see his special teams snaps take a dip. One can only guess who will replace Hill as a kick returner. Many are looking to newly acquired running back C.J. Spiller to shoulder the load.

Another option may be rookie Kareem Hunt who shows great promise as a new back and has the skill set necessary to produce huge returns. Whoever is chosen we know that Dave Toub will do everything in his power to have them ready to succeed as the newest weapon on an already stacked unit.

Mr. Eric Berry Brings It

Eric Berry is known for his bruising hits, step for step coverage, and ball hawking skills. Something he is lesser know for (but even more important) is his heart. On June 7th, a woman named Rebecca Scott Mills told a story that will reaffirm your faith in humanity.

Mills tells that as she and her husband were enjoying a night out on the town and a dinner date she happened to see our very own Eric Berry at the restaurant they were dining at. Berry proceeded to order a few meals but had them packaged to go. Her husband Todd being a huge football fan immediately recognized Berry ordering food but did not want to interrupt him.

As the husband and wife were exiting the restaurant they again see Eric, this time carrying his load of meals out to the street. What they saw next will make all of the fans in Kansas City proud and a little misty eyed. The highest paid safety in the game delivered meals to 3 homeless people and began to to kneel down and pray with them.

This small gesture is just another example of how lucky the Chiefs are to have a player of Eric’s skill and character playing for them.

Reporters tried to contact representatives for Berry but were told that he did not want to comment on what transpired. This says even more about our safety. If he were just looking for publicity and wanting another headline with his name on it Berry would have been more than ready to speak to reporters about that night. The fact that he doesn’t want to publicize what he has done shows us that he wants to help people on a personal level and just happened to be caught in the act by someone who recognized him.

Had this woman not seen this wonderful act and brought it to the attention of social media Berry would have went about his day as if nothing happened. Thank you Eric for showing us that there is always someone who needs help and that anyone can brighten someones day.

This is not the only charitable act Berry is involved in. If you would like to help, please visit the Eric Berry Foundation to find out more. http://eb29.com/online/eric-berry-foundation/

Mandatory Mini-camp Madness

On Tuesday the Chiefs will open their mandatory mini-camp and all teammates will be required to attend. Safety Daniel Sorenson had a few thoughts about the upcoming camp.

“We were running everything out here full speed and I assume and expect the same for next week. It’s an opportunity to get better and hone in on your craft and to just get better. It’s more reps. It’s more opportunities to practice and get better.”

He did mention that they are limited in what can be done during these practices. “We aren’t training the tackling part, but there’s a lot of other aspects and skills you need to hone in on and get better at.” The players who skipped the last camp, Peters, Berry, and Houston will all be in attendance and provide much needed guidance and experience to the newest rookie and undrafted free agent class. Sorenson of course, will be there himself and help to mold the next generation of Chiefs. This time next week we will be speaking of how the mini-camp unfolded and dissecting every pass and block. I can hardly wait.
