K.C. Chiefs and the Sunday Sum Up! 6.25.17

Hello all! Welcome back to the best part of your Sunday morning! The Sunday Sum Up! This week has been a puzzling and eventful week. A few unexpected headlines have been made and more questions than answers have arisen. So without further ado lets get to it!

Reid Ready to Rock!

In light of other news coming out of One Arrowhead Drive, the news of Andy Reid’s contract extension has been overshadowed. Some other news that has been overlooked is how well Reid has done as a head coach.

Reid is now tied with Jeff Fisher at 11th on career wins head coaches with 173. With Hunt signing Andy to a brand spankin’ new 5 year contract he has the opportunity to move much higher on the list of all time wins for a head coach. With only 55 more wins he would hold 228 career wins which would move him far up the list into the top 5 of all head coaches. If Reid can live out his contract with the Chiefs he would need to average 11 wins a year to punch his ticket to immortality with the other great head coaches in the top five.

The top 4 coaches with the highest win totals are Don Shula, George Halas, Tom Landry and Bill Belichick. That is some pretty impressive company there. At the young age of 59 Andy Reid could also be coaching for some time to come. Other men who have coached well into their golden years include Tom Coughlin, Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick.

If Reid is able to make it into the top five this would automatically put him into Hall of Fame contention even without a Super Bowl victory on his resume. Now, we all know the Super Bowl victory is not something to worry about because the Chiefs will most certainly become back to back champions in the coming years. With the Lombardi Trophy safely in the trophy case at Arrowhead Stadium Andy will only need to do what he does best. Win.

Dorsey Driven Down

This is the headliner of the week for the Kansas City Chiefs. On Thursday, Clark Hunt had his team release a statement announcing the contract extension for his head coach, Andy Reid. Shortly thereafter, the top brass in K.C. issued another statement to the public: the Kansas City Chiefs organization has decided to part ways with their current general manager John Dorsey. No explanation, no answer as to why Dorsey was let go, just a brief statement saying he was gone.

Now rumors will run rampant as to why. Some say it was the handling of Jamaal Charles’ release, others say it was the Jeremy Maclin incident, still others say it was the mismanagement of the salary cap that has caused the recent breakup between the two camps. John Dorsey was excellent at finding talent in hidden places and it has become commonplace for the bottom end of the roster to be churned over several times throughout the year.

One area John Dorsey was found to be lacking in was contract negotiations and salary cap management. This was evident in the horrible contract extension given to former Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe. Dorsey came out swinging for the fences and wound up hitting a foul ball with the contract handed to Bowe. A $56M disaster with over $26M guaranteed and a $15M signing bonus should have been the first indication that John may not have the proper acumen for contract negotiations.

I was personally a fan of Dorsey and believed that he and Reid had finally righted the ship in Kansas City. Things were looking up. Then in this last offseason we saw several strange happenings:

  • Jamaal Charles, the face of the franchise for the better part of a decade, was allowed to go to a divisional rival without even a phone call to offer a league minimum contract. This should have been a no-brainer. Almost no risk and a huge reward, also you give someone who has put himself on the line a chance to retire with his original team. Charles had been horribly underpaid throughout his entire career. He could have easily played hardball and been paid the big bucks but he did not. Jamaal consistently played excellent football for a minimum salary. A single phone call from Dorsey could have kept him in house.
  • So after the release of Charles had been confirmed as an unmitigated disaster, we see the Dorsey release his #1 wide receiver Jeremy Maclin BY VOICEMAIL! Now I personally agree with the release of Maclin. I believe he was overpaid and vastly under-performed as a primary receiver. What I do not agree with is firing someone by voicemail. Something of this importance should merit an in person conversation or at the very least actually speaking to the player on the phone. This was the equivalent of breaking up with your middle school sweetheart by text message. Be a man and call the guy.
  • Other reports out of Chiefs Kingdom seem to indicate Dorsey and Hunt have been butting heads as of late. This may have been the last push Clark needed to finally go over the edge.

With Dorsey gone and Reid re-signed this will leave the future general manager in a bit of a tough spot. Usually when a new manager is brought in he wants to do things his way, bring in his guys, his coaches. A new manager would want to mold the team into a winner how they see fit. I believe the signing of Reid to a new contract is a good thing for KC but it may be hard to find a general manager who is willing to take the team how it is now and work well with Reid to boot. This could greatly reduce the interest of potential managers outside of the organization. I mean really, who wants to finally become the big boss and have your hands tied right off the bat. It will be interesting to see who is interviewed for the position in the coming weeks.

Tantalizing Tidbits

These are just little bits of news that may interest you readers out there:

Derek Carr and the Raiders agree to a new 5 year contract worth 125 million dollars which makes him the highest paid player in the history of the league. Over 70 million in guarantees and 40 million guaranteed on signing.

Emory University has released a study ranking NFL fan bases. Emory University has ranked the Kansas City fans as dead last. Kansas City is the team that has been mired in mediocrity for years yet their fans always managed to sell out the stadium. The teams fans that have always been there rain or shine, sleet or snow, scorching hot or freezing cold is ranked last. The teams fans that hold the record for loudest stadium is ranked last. Garbage. That is all I have to say about that study. Garbage.
