A very happy Sunday to all of you out there in Chiefs Kingdom! This week has been relatively quiet in regard to Chiefs news. As a surprise no new front office additions or promotions have been announced. But lets get to it. Here’s your Sunday Sum Up!
Choosing The Commander
The Kansas City Chiefs stunned the world when they fired their recently successful general manager John Dorsey. Dorsey had been brought in to run the show while head coach Andy Reid worked with the players. After turning the team around from a horrible season John and Andy put together a very successful team and had yet to produce a losing season. Now some of you will say that any time you don’t win it all it is technically a losing season. I have to agree, but the team put together by Dorsey was trending upwards in the power rankings and even had some post season success. After a head scratching offseason Clark Hunt decided the team needed a different direction and fired our GM. Now the Chiefs are the only team in the league to be heading into camp without a general manager in place. Hopefully we do not have to wait for long for that fact to change. Mr. Hunt has a few interviews in place to remedy the situation.
First up is Brett Veach. Veach was a candidate for the Buffalo Bills general manager position, luckily for us he stayed in house and is available for a promotion. Currently he is the co-director of player personnel and has a strong history as a scout. This would be advantageous because Chiefs fans have become accustomed to Dorsey churning the bottom of the roster to dredge up great positional depth. Another fact going in Brett’s favor is his history with Andy Reid. He was an assistant to Reid in 2007 and climbed the ladder in Philadelphia becoming known for his fantastic scouting abilities. He should be heavily favored to succeed Dorsey as the next GM for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Second up is Scott Fitterer. Fitterer is currently employed by the Seattle Seahawks as their Co-Director of Player Personnel and has a history as a college scout and was even a director of college scouting for the Seahawks. During his tenure as the director of scouting the Seahawks drafted many strong players who helped contribute to their Super Bowl championship. He was a part of the drafting of Russel Wilson, Kam Chancellor and even Richard Sherman. Fitterer is a strong candidate and even if he doesn’t come to Kansas City it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he is hired as a general manager by another team in the near future.
Finally we have Ryan Cowden. It has been reported that Ryan Cowden of the Tennessee Titans was interviewed for the vacancy in the big office at the end of the hall at One Arrowhead Drive. Cowden is the least polished candidate being interviewed for the position but shouldn’t be counted out. He has overseen college and pro scouting for the Titans and has had a hand in Tennessee turning around their team in recent years. Hunt must have seen something in him to merit an invite to Arrowhead and we should wait and see what comes of his interview.
Regardless of who is finally hired for the vacant position we all know one thing, Andy Reid isn’t going anywhere. After signing a new 5 year contract whoever is next up as the man in charge must accept the fact that Reid will be the head coach. This reason is why I believe Veach will be the man to make the move. He is already accustomed to working with Reid in Kansas City and knows how things have been going for the past few years. What do you guys think? Who out of these three would make the better manager?
Keep Ours Or Orr?
Usually at this time of the year most of the bigger name free agents are picked clean. The remaining players are the left overs after the feeding frenzy that occurs before the mini camps. In a bit of a surprise there is one great player still left. He is left not because he was picked over and found wanting but because he un-retired. Zach Orr is a former All Pro linebacker who recently decided to retire due to a congenital neck and spine condition. Believing his condition would lead to more harm down the road he chose to hang up the cleats and keep himself healthy. However recently Orr announced to the world that he would be returning to the NFL due to a change in his diagnosis. This is great news for any linebacker needy team, which the Kansas City Chiefs happen to be. Currently set at OLB, the Chiefs would greatly appreciate the help at ILB. Behind Derrick Johnson the Chiefs have little to write home about and unfortunately Johnson is coming back from his second Achilles tear and not getting any younger. Johnson is a terror on the field but we have to start looking to the future of the position and Orr would fit the bill perfectly. The Chiefs have a talented roster already in place but it can always use some improvement. With Ramik Wilson and Justin March-Lillard waiting in the wings bringing in Orr would only push the Chiefs into a better position causing a competition for the starting position and bringing out the best in all the them. I would love to see Orr sign with the Chiefs but I wouldn’t hold my breath. With no GM in place to make the initial call and little in cap space Orr could be out of reach. Stranger things have happened though so we can always hold out hope that everything may fall into place and Orr would be wearing red and gold at the beginning of the season.
