K.C. Chiefs and the Sunday Sum Up!

Listen up fellow Chiefs fanatics! Today I am proud — no privileged — to introduce you to an all new weekly piece brought by yours truly to your desktop or phones in the bathroom (Really? You are reading my hard work while sitting on the porcelain throne!) This article has one point: to bring all of the minor and important factoids related to our beloved Chiefs. Let the Sunday Sum Up begin!

With the 10th pick in the 2017 draft…

The powers to be at 1 Arrowhead Drive shocked the NFL world by bursting onto the scene in the first round of the draft. Leap-frogging over 17 picks from number 27 to number 10 in a blockbuster trade with the Buffalo Bills to select PATRICK MAHOMES II (PM2). In exchange for a first and third in the 2017 draft and our first pick in the 2018 draft, we have F-I-N-A-L-L-Y broken a terrible streak. Not since the 1983 draft has Kansas City even considered bringing in a quarterback from the first round. For 34 long, long seasons we have been mired by middling play from one of the most important positions on the field.

Up and down years with no franchise QB in sight has become commonplace on the battlefield at Arrowhead. Sure Montana came in for a couple years, Green showed up, Cassel even had a decent year, but some of the best play has come from the uber conservative Alex Smith. Smith is a capable quarterback who will not put your team in a bad position but, will never rise out of the ashes and carry you — on his own — to the playoffs. In comes PM2 who has the arm, accuracy, and skill to not only lead but, to excel in the passing game. Only time will tell if this trade will pay off but we can all say one thing: at least Dorsey has the stones to take a chance. He took the risk and hopefully we will all bask in the reward of excellent QB play for years to come!

John Dorsey the Mover….

In previous years, the news coming out of the war room had always been ‘Best Player Available’. This year, that mantra was thrown out the window. Where before the Chiefs would normally stand pat or even trade down to acquire more picks the top brass opted to package multiple picks and move around. Every view into the draft room would appear to show Dorsey on the phone presumably with other GMs. When their selections were finally announced everyone in the room would brighten up and be all smiles. This draws comparisons with the front office of one of the most successful franchises of the decade: the New England Patriots. Coach Belichick has shown little regard for the outside world when drafting his players often deciding to pick only… who he wants where he wants. Building through the draft is key to the success of any organization. We have all seen that the upper echelon of the NFL — including the Patriots — are relatively quiet in free agency, choosing to draft and develop their own talent instead. They allow their aging and more expensive talent to depart as free agents and pick up their replacements in the draft. Dorsey expanded on this idea and appears to be running with it.

Derrick Johnson on the way…

Derrick Johnson has been one of the best to ever roam the turf at Arrowhead. After a second ruptured Achilles-tendon,  we had to ask ourselves if he would ever be the same. If recent news is anything to go from, he will be back as good as ever.  DJ said recently, “If I’m not 100 percent at camp, there will have been some kind of setback, I’ll be back hitting or dodging some blocks.”

Those are bold words from someone who couldn’t even walk. DJ is the ultimate competitor and it would stand to reason that he would not sit idle during his rehab. If these words were to come from anyone else it could be met with a certain amount of suspicion. Number 56, in my opinion, is speaking nothing but the truth. Just watch his workout videos and see for yourselves. He WILL be ready and he WILL DOMINATE!

Sunday Sum Up: Bonus tidbit…

Jamaal Charles has yet to sign with any team this offseason leaving the door open for a fantastic reunion. He has showcased his surgically repaired knee in multiple videos working out. It would be hard to imagine him wearing anything but red and gold. Here’s hoping he can return home and spend the rest of his decorated career the way he started: as a Kansas City Chief!

Well, there you have it guys. The first of many Sunday Sum Ups. Comment below and as always VIVA LA JET SWEEP and GO CHIEFS!
