Geez, I just realized after reading the above thread is how for once St Joe will actually be cooler than Greater Portland this coming week. We are supposed to have three straight days of over 100 with temps reaching 106. They had predicted a record setting 108, but, we were allowed to veto it.

Plus, I questioned his strength before his injuries. WIth his injury, he certainly has not been able to do much strength work. So, will he even be a factor this season?

  • berttheclock

When the Chiefs face the Seahawks in the second pre-season (practice) game, don’t expect to see Tyler Lockett on the field. He has been placed on the short list of PUP and could be activated come the regular season. They are trying to give him as much healing time as possible from his terrible injury from last year.

  • berttheclock

Just read that the Denver coaching staff has said they expect to give Jamaal Charles about 8 to 10 reps a game in the early part of the season.

  • berttheclock

Also, word coming out of the Carolina camp says that McCaffery has appeared to be unstoppable coming out of the backfield catching passes. They have not found anyone who can stay with him one on one.

    • berttheclock

Very happy Denver could not draft him or even Oakland/Vegas/Wherever.

  • berttheclock

If anyone else was confused reading about Charles catching screen passes at camp, he is Orson Charles, the H-back/TE/FB from Georgia, who was originally signed by the Bengals. Played some, then, was injured and had wandered a bit with one entire year off two years back. Today, he has caught two consecutive screen passes. I put in FB above as the Bengals used him strictly as a FB in 2013.

  • berttheclock

I don’t know if he’s any good (i.e., decision making, pocket awareness, etc.), but Bray throws a pretty ball from what I’ve seen.

    • Laurels and limitations

he always has, I can remember him throwing at the combine like it was yesterday. All these other QBs putting everything they had into their throws and Bray was super composed, nonchalant, and lunch pail about it. He made it look easy. What I really like is how the coaches are talking up his mental game as well as people noticing that his pocket presence has improved.

  • berttheclock

Meanwhile, down in Jags’ land (London or Jacksonville?), it appears to be a “Who will blink first” showdown. Albert says he is retiring, but, the GM says if he does, then, he will have to repay $3.4 M to the Jags.

    • berttheclock

Now, which NFL team really needs a young QB, either as a backup or as a starter? Looks as though Bray may well see a great deal of action in the 4 upcoming games, that is, for someone’s viewing pleasure.

not sure, but all of his coaches speak of how underrated his mental aptitude is. Mahomes was a regular on the Dean’s list in college and all.

      • Laurels and limitations

yeah, that sparq thingy is definitely a tool that is used league wide. I still don’t think it is the be all/end all that some people do….but I definitely believe it is a separator when evaluating talent.

  • Laurels and limitations

    • Merlin

When he was in KC he was stuck on being a QB.

      • berttheclock

Wrong place, wrong system, wrong time. Remember when Ethan Horton was paid $1.5 M by the Chiefs, then, they learned he did not know how to run as a RB from a pro set? Only to emerge following strike ball in Oakland, convinced by Al Davis that he should switch to TE where he came back and scored a TD against the Chiefs.

        • Merlin

He had a decent career at a TE. The Raiders converted several players to TE with a lot of success back then.

      • Laurels and limitations

I think it was Pryor’s next stop in Cleveland where he was convinced to switch position, iirc. Just sayin’ it might have been nice is all.

    • berttheclock

Well, Dorsey was correct about the other 3 players he cut the same day he cut Pryor. Both Jo Jo Dickson and Jorgen Hus tried to make it in Canada, but, did not last very long. Then, Corbin Louks was given a shot with the Broncos and is long gone from football. At the time, it was stated that the major reason for the four cuts is Dorsey needed room on the roster to sign draft picks.

  • berttheclock

L & L should be pleased to know Danan Hughes is very high on Mahomes II. Now, who is Hughes? He is one of the best athletes ever to play for Iowa and played wide out for the Chiefs during the ’80s. Hughes is noted for being one of the best two sport athletes ever to come out of Iowa. He was a very high MLB draft choice, but, he chose to play football. Works back in Iowa today.

    • Laurels and limitations

thing is, I haven’t heard one bad word about PM2 yet. I sure hope the guy grows into people’s expectations.

      • berttheclock

If he continues to shine up at St Joe, I believe the 4 preseason games will be the NFL equivalent of Best Buy. What I mean by that is Best Buy has the rep of being a showcase for folks to view products, then, find better deals online. The games will be used by the Chiefs to showcase Bray so some NFL team will want him.

        • Laurels and limitations

agreed, I’ve thought that for a while. One could argue that Bray getting so many reps as the number 2 in training camp is showcasing his skillset for other teams to buy as well. I won’t be surprised one bit to see the QB depth as Smith/PM2/Stave come the regular season.

    • berttheclock

Interestingly, he compared his play to that of Cool Lenny. Funny thing about that is Hughes was born just after the Chiefs won the SB, I believe. Has a sense of history, though.

      • Laurels and limitations

yeah, I read the interview but I stop short of comparing the two QBs, such a different time, ya know?

Makes me wonder if Goodley has had this same “hammy” issue elsewhere… and that might have become his way of avoiding actually being evaluated.

          • Laurels and limitations

no idea, he was a pretty under-the-radar-signing in any case. The best I was hoping for out of him was a STs guy, but they might have been hoping for a PS project.

A few days ago I asked why Chiefs had any interest in Goodley. Apparently, they just asked themselves the same question. Color Me intrigued by Wheelwright. Like his #s.

    • ladner morse

Looked up his numbers. Nothing pops out. 6-3, 210 lbs. 4.6 40-yard dash. 890 total receiving yards for Wisconsin.

      • Chiefly Bacon

Couple of numbers excite me on him. 6.68 3-Cone Drill. That’s a crazy good number for a WR. Deals with your ability to change direction. DeMarcus Robinson, a guy we have high hopes for, also ran a 4.6 40, but excelled after the catch due to a 6.69 3-cone. Another number to look at is the 20 yard shuttle. RW runs a 4.14 20 yard shuttle. Anything close to a .5 second differential between your 40 and your 20 yard shuttle is indicative of big time change of direction ability. This kid comes from a run based offense in Wisconsin, so he’s a good blocker, but was under-used in the passing game. Teach this kid to run routes and he could be really good.

        • Laurels and limitations

          practice squad?

          • Chiefly Bacon

Probably. Not a lot of WR spots up for grabs, and a lot of competition. He’ll probably need some route work, but the physical tools are there. Just have to hope he doesn’t get poached.

          • Laurels and limitations

eh, that’s just a product of having a decent roster. I’m okay with guys getting poached, that means that the rest of roster is good to go for the most part.

          • Chiefly Bacon

Maybe so, but if Albert Wilson is on the roster, and WheelWright gets poached from the PS, I’m going to be very sad.

          • Laurels and limitations

lol, I can understand the stance, but I just don’t agree. If Wright is the better player he’ll be elevated over whoever he is better than. That’s just how the roster thingy works.

          • Chiefly Bacon

Yes and no. It’s a mixture of factors. Sometimes a better player gets cut because they don’t know the playbook as well as a vet. Sometimes a worse player is kept around to see if he’ll develop. Chiefs eventually moved on from Keivarre Russel, but he was still bad when he initially made the 53-man roster.

          • Laurels and limitations

KC’s roster has matured enough that Veach and Co. understand how to move pieces without forfeiting wins. I agree with the “mixture of factors” though, it’s just that I have large reservations in elevating a UDFA over a known commodity. Especially when that commodity and the starting QB have experience together.

I’m not real sure about the Russel example however. Russel wasn’t let go for his ability so early, it had to be something else.

          • Chiefly Bacon

Could have been something else, but he was awful all through training camp.

          • ladner morse

  • So, interesting article on the Chiefs LB Corp — Denver Post: Chiefs’ linebackers could emerge as league’s best unit

By Dave Skretta | The Associated Press

    July 31, 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Justin Houston was a bit late to practice over the weekend because he had to take one of the league’s random drug tests, and the star linebacker wasn’t told about it until he’d just gone to the
    bathroom.

His brief absence still caused quite a stir on social media. If nothing else, the humorous episode showed just how closely watched the linebacker position will be in Kansas City this season.

The group anchored by Houston, veteran stalwart Derrick Johnson and breakout pass rusher Dee Ford could be one of the best in the league if everyone stays healthy, and could ultimately hold the key to whether the
Chiefs have a defense that can carry them deep into the postseason. “This year we are healthy. The main guys are healthy from the start,” Houston said. “Last year from the start we didn’t have everybody. This
year we have everybody from the start, and if we can just keep everybody healthy I think we definitely can make a lot of noise.”

The Chiefs often struggled to pressure the quarterback and stop the run last season, and that was a direct result of the difficulty they had in finding able bodies at linebacker.

Houston struggled with a knee injury for the second straight year last season. Johnson ruptured his Achilles tendon in December. Tamba Hali has become a part-time player thanks to his age and injuries. And backup linebacker Josh Mauga went on injured reserve in training camp.

The shuffling of replacements dragged down the entire unit. The Chiefs only piled up 28 sacks after getting 47 the previous season, and that created problems elsewhere on the defense.

Now, it appears the Chiefs’ linebacker group is the healthiest it’s been in quite a while.

Houston is running with the first-team defense in 11-on-11 periods in training camp, and Johnson is already back to full speed after his knee surgery. Hali is on the physically unable-to-perform list, though that
was expected as the Chiefs try to keep him fresh for the regular season.

“I’ve had some good luck and I want to keep it going,” said Johnson, the franchise’s career tackles leader, who also ruptured his other Achilles tendon a couple of years ago.
“It’s 7½ months removed from surgery, so it’s a little different,” Johnson said. “It’s good to get out here and knock off the cobwebs and get my feet wet. Mentally I’m almost there all the way already, but physically I’ll get a little faster during camp.”

Hali also said he’s “way ahead of the ballgame….“Last year around this time, I could barely run. It took a while for me to regain my strength,” he said. “As far as where I am today, I can run. I can do the things that I was doing before the year. I feel much healthier. …

“It’s a little different because of my age and the amount of snaps I’ve gotten. But again, that doesn’t play in my mind, just because I am a competitor.”

Despite their core of veterans, the Chiefs are being pragmatic about the linebacker position. They saw how injuries mounted last season and quickly learned the value of depth across the board.

That’s why they signed Mauga as a free agent, and traded special teams ace D.J. Alexander to the Seahawks for linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis last week.

It’s why they grabbed Reshard Cliett off waivers from the Titans and drafted Ukeme Eligwe in the fifth round out of Georgia Southern.

Throw in holdovers such as Justin March-Lillard, Ramik Wilson and Terrance Smith and there are plenty of bodies in training camp, each competing for playing time in what could be a stacked unit.

“Obviously, we missed Justin for quite a while,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said after practice Monday. “Obviously, he is a really good rusher. We had some nicks and knacks with injuries and that,
but that’s kind of the NFL. It’s what everybody goes through.”

It’s also what prompted Chiefs coach Andy Reid to state the obvious: “We want to keep building the depth in that position.”

And if everyone stays healthy? Even better.

“We have a big window of opportunity for us,” Ford said. “You don’t want to think ahead, but you still want to think about that. We’ve been to the second round (of the playoffs) and then last year we had the first-round bye.

“We want to get to big plans. We’re definitely coming into this year, chopping wood each day, but also thinking of where we’re trying to end up.”
