K.C. Chiefs Training Camp Open Thread: Day Three

IT-IS-ON! Let the hitting begin! Today is the day when the Kansas City Chiefs will be wearing pads for the first time. Putting on the pads, in literal terms, is the dream fulfilled for a football player. Up to this point in the offseason it’s all been just, “Ballet with a ball.” Now, the real straining begins… as well as the real hitting. Now, we’ll be able to distinguish the keepers from the clutter.

Today, the 2017 version of Kansas City Chiefs begins to come into focus. Sorry to say but, today, the risk of injury goes way up and that, as much as anything else, can determine the fate of quite a few men wanting nothing more than to make this roster.

Here are a few of my favorite moments from yesterday’s practice. Please enjoy, while we’re awaiting today’s “fistivities” to ensue:

Have yet to see Justin Houston or safety Jordan Sterns at practice this morning. Sterns out I'll yesterday. No word on Houston yet.— Matt Derrick (@mattderrick) July 30, 2017

    • berttheclock

Remember, there are only so many days for any younger player trying to make a roster, so, being “I’ll” could have major ramifications for Mr Stern. Are there even pills for being I’ll?

      • ladner morse

“Pills 4 Ills”… maybe we could market that!

  • Heilios

I think we will see Bray featured in the preseason and look to trade him at the start of the season. With Mahomes signed and stave to hold down the #3 spot I just do not see us carrying 4 quarterbacks. This is actually what o didn’t want. I really wanted Bray to succeed and become a starter.

    • ladner morse

I like Bray too and loved hi arm in college… nearly as much as I love PM2’s arm now… you know Bray and Mahomes have the exact same ball speed. With Bray getting FOUR YEARS in this system… it’s hard not to think that he won’t be successful this year as the number two. Besides… would Reid have kept him and not signed another vet backup… if Bray wasn’t good enough to step up. It’s a risk… but if Reid is comfortable with Bray… then I can’t wait to see him in preseason games.

Wonder if they are using the new Peloton one sees so much of on ads on cable shows. I saw one recently at Costco and they want about $2,400 for the sucker. Speaking of DAT below, remember his nickname from years past about being The Black Mamba. Now, a mamba is a very fast moving snake. But, in the PNW of years back, there was an extremely fast race horse which had been bred in Idaho, but, raced mostly in Washington. His name was Murr the Blur. When, you see Hill run, he is more of a blur.

    • ladner morse

In fact… when I am trying to get a screen capture of him… it’s very difficult because every frame of his is blurred. So I usually have to wait until he makes a cut and has to change direction before he slows enough to get a capture.

Looks as though KPL will be spending far more time working with Gary Gibbs and not so much with Toub.

      • ladner morse

        Here’s hoping that’s a trend…

        • ladner morse

Because Toub seems to be able to turn dirt into lemonade.

          • berttheclock

This makes more sense of the trade. At first I was against it as I only read last year’s stats of KPL with the Seahawks. But, the Seahawks really needed to beef up their ST play, whereas the Chiefs needed more LB help.

          • ladner morse

I’ve done a little research on KPL and will do a feature piece on him soon. I like what I’ve found out so far. He fights depression and it out about it — why — because he wants to help others with depression. Mental/emotional challenges in this day and age is like gay rights of the 1970’s… most don;t want to come out. Interesting young man.

I think this is day three (but yes, day two for KPL).

Just reading the letters KP makes me shudder and not fondly remembering those days of yore at Ft Lost in the Woods. They don’t have KP anymore in the service, but, one of the worst times to pull such was when spaghetti was served. Oily mess.

Rich kid, huh? We had food, cannot remember a thing but was hungry if it did not bite us, it vanished faster than you could throw it back up.

Hard to really read into moves this early in training camp, but, it appears in just 3 days, Travis has seen far more activity than he did last year for the entire year.

Will Harris, also, have to make an early appointment for a U-Haul?

OL Isaiah Battle returned to practice today after suffering a hamstring injury. Just left the very end of practice on the cart with trainer.— Matt Derrick (@mattderrick) July 30, 2017

I will, probably “watch” the first practice game against the Niners online. But, as I live in the PNW, the local TV stations will have the Seahawks feed for the second game. Only problem with that is the vast amount of time, the announcers of the Seahawks will spend only talking with various Seahawks’ players while action is taking place in the background.

I had to re-new my Preseason NFL Game Pass at NFL.com and it is costing me $99.00 for four games! $25 per game? Geez!

      • berttheclock

The NFL really knows how to extract extra cash from fans, eh? Merlin wrote a great comment recently about the days of yore when the Chiefs went to Wisconsin for their TC and it was free for anyone driving up. Then, the Chiefs discovered a cash cow in being able to charge fans to visit St Joe.

        • berttheclock

I wonder how many of the younger set even know the Chiefs used to train at nearby William Jewell prior to the move to Wisconsin, where, the Chiefs often engaged the Vikings in playing either fisticuffs or football.

          • Merlin

Back then, the Vikings were a cheap, dirty team. I was all in favor of stopping joint practices with them. Someone always got hurt, You could count on it.

      • Laurels and limitations

for that kind of money I’m pretty sure I would just wait for the replay to aired.

        • Chiefs-Kings-A’s

When you live in California and you are a Chiefs fan, Game pass is the shizzle.
I remember pre-internet I would get the local Monday paper and pray there would be a paragraph about the Chiefs as they would do a quip on a hand full of games, but not all of them. I thought I was in heaven when Montana went there, our paper would report on the Chiefs.

    • Laurels and limitations

Reid actually gave some pretty good answers but that was to be expected at that this time of the year. Not very many secrets to be kept when your only trying to get guy’s heads back into the game.
