Kansas City Chiefs Play To The Competition

As we wind down to the final game of the season, our Kansas City Chiefs have come up short yet again. It seems our team isn’t in it for the glory of winning the Lombardi Trophy. They are happy with just beating top teams during the regular season. What more could possibly be achieved by playing in and winning the Super Bowl?

Let’s take a moment and recount the last few seasons and how we did against the Super Bowl teams.

2017 – TBD Super Bowl Champs

On September 7, 2017 the Chiefs beat the New England Patriots on their home turf by a score of 42-27. This was the start of the season and a five game winning streak. It said to the nation the Chiefs are for real.

On September 17, 2017 the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles at Arrowhead by a score of 27-20. It was a tough game and a strong follow up to the New England game. It reinforced this team as being different.

Regardless of which team wins, the Chiefs beat them this year. We would also be the only team to beat both of the Super Bowl contestants this year.

2016 – Atlanta Falcons Super Bowl Runner Up

On December 4, 2016 the Chiefs beat the Atlanta Falcons in Atlanta in stunning fashion. It was a defensive masterpiece by Eric Berry and teammates. Berry capped it off with the one and only Pick 2, in NFL history. This victory put the team at 9-3 and looking like a real contender for post season competition.

2015 – Denver Broncos Super Bowl Champs

On November 15, 2015 the Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos in Mile High. This was the game Peyton Manning went 5/20 and was replaced by Brock Osweiler. The game wasn’t as close as the score indicates, with the Broncos score all of their points in garbage time. This is the season we started 1-5 and then ripped off 10 straight wins to end the season and head into the playoffs.

2014 – New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

On September 29, 2014 the Chiefs beat the New England Patriots at Arrowhead. Along the way, they also set the world record for loudest stadium in the world. This game was a dismantling of the Patriots that saw Tom Brady benched and a nothing could go wrong score of 41-14.

On November 16, 2014 the Chiefs beat the Seattle Seahawks at Arrowhead. This game was much closer, with a score of 24-20. This was a ground game on offense, with neither QB getting much done through the air.

During the last 4 football seasons, the KC Chiefs have beaten all 6 out of the 8 Super Bowl contestants they faced, 3 out of the 4 Super Bowl winners from the 2014-2017 seasons. Let that sink in.

If we can beat these teams during the regular season, why do we struggle so much in the post season? Is it a case of peaking too soon? Maybe it is not being able to deliver during crunch time. Just playing to the level of our competition, with the early rounds being “lesser” competition? Who knows?

At this point, I am just tired of seeing the team deliver some incredible games against tough teams in the regular season, to only get knocked out by teams that can’t score TDs or where we give up a 28 point lead. It is very disheartening to watch season after season.

I hope this offseason brings in a lot of change that affects game planning and in-game adjustments. It seems we lose sight of what is and isn’t working in the game. The coaching staff (or Andy Reid) becomes so conservative, in an attempt to not lose the game, they actually lose the game.

What do you guys think? How do we beat the best teams, but lose in the playoffs so often?
