NFL Trade Deadline Thread — DREAM TRADE HITCHIN’ POST

With the NFL Trade Deadline 4 short days away on November 1st, it’s time to… dream up that trade… fix your team… let the mules outta the barn (I don’t actually know what that means, I just thought it sounded right). So, here, we can all make our own suggestions about possible trades, if any, that the Kansas City Chiefs general manager COULD make to improve the team for the rest of 2016 and/or moving forward. In other words, you can trade for a ringer (usually refers to a horse or player brought in under false pretenses as far as identity is concerned) but not really a ringer, just someone who is designed to only help out the remainder of this season (Dorsey has brought in a number of guys on one year deals) or you can suggest a solid trade for a playmaker who might re-sign a longer term deal with the team but a player who obviously makes them stronger right away.

In recent days, LT Joe Staley has come up but most fans have shot that idea down. CB Joe Haden was also suggested. Yesterday, the outstandingly humorous blogger who goes by “Laurels and Limitations” made this pitch: “Minnesota!? I love it, KC can trade for Eric Kendricks and finally get him just like they should have in the draft two years ago.” No matter how glorious it would have been to get Kendricks (because I was high on him too) it would have required the Chiefs moving up 5 slots in the second round AND consequently missing out on Mitch Morse (and you should never pass on a Morse) or trading down out of the first round and then missing out on the Greek God of Mt. INT… Marcus Peters (and we can all see what folly that would have turned out to be). From the World Wide Web of Twitterville comes this from Jason LaCanfora about a trade Tampa is wanting to make:

I know that the possible Joe Haden trade has been suggested before but not in a way that makes sense of his salary or the Chiefs salary cap situation but with that said, here’s one I kind of like from scout.com:

Joe Haden Trade

“Trade 2017 1st round pick to Cleveland for Joe Haden.  Why I make this deal?  He would fulfill our #1 need right now.  He is also under contract until 2020 with around 10 million per year in salary.  That is cheap for a player like him, he would command 13-15 mil per on the open market.”

Here’s an outrageous one about Odell Beckham Jr. called: “NFL Rumors: Odell Beckham Jr. trade coming with his attitude problem” but I don’t place much stock in that one and I’m not interested in seeing a ranting mess come to K.C. no matter how great his hands are.

Here’s a trade suggestion from ESPN by Adam “Obviously-Bored-Out-Of-My-Wits” Teicher who says the Chiefs could trade none other than,

Nick Foles Trade

“The Chiefs aren’t looking to part with Foles, but his experience would be valuable to a contending team that needs an upgrade or injury replacement at quarterback. Alex Smith has been remarkably durable in his three-plus seasons as the Chiefs’ quarterback; he has missed just one game because of injury. The Chiefs already dealt their most expendable player, running back Knile Davis, to the Packers. — Adam Teicher”

It’s Murphy’s Law and anything that can go wrong… like losing Alex Smith for multiple games… probably will go wrong so while Foles might bring something valuable to a possible trade partner, I’m not onboard here. Then again, if the offer includes a second round pick or better… who am I to judge?

It looks like the San Francisco 49ers are willing to throw Torrey Smith in for any trade partner interested in another player or by himself as I understand it. Of course, the big STICKING point with T. Smith is the five-year, $40 million contract he got from the 49ers in March of 2015. Pass.

Then, there’s always the Leave-Land-Browns. However, the kicker here is that, “Joe Thomas hopes Browns stick to their word about not trading him” in the face of rumors that they were trying to trade him. I can completely understand why Thomas would say that… uhh… no, I can’t but, he did. Go figure… I hope you’re good with Math and reasoning skills because why on planet earth would he say that?

Here’s another possible Chiefs trade from a scout.com blogger:

Sheldon Richardson Trade

“Trade 2017 2nd round pick to Jets for Sheldon Richardson.  He is being majorly misused in NY and they have so many other holes.  They have do move him before next year as they don’t want to extend him and can’t risk an injury or off the field issue.  With Allen Bailey out Chris Jones will step in and be a big upgrade but Sheldon Richardson is a major upgrade over Jaye Howard and Dontari Poe.  Having Sheldon Richardson, Jaye Howard and Chris Jones as our starting DL next year would be flat out amazing. We would still have 8 picks in the draft in 2017 to continue to build depth on this roster.  These two moves would give us a championship level defense IMO.”

So, let me get this party started by suggesting the following Chiefs trade of:

De’Anthony Thomas Trade

De’Anthony Thomas still has some trade value to the right trade partner. Specifically, I’m referring to Chip Kelly in San Francisco. It’s been my belief that DAT was not on the active roster in the first weeks of this season to, 1) keep him on the roster because John Dorsey recognizes his still has trade value and 2) because DAT could get hurt if he does play. While coach Andy Reid has maintained that DAT was not activated because he wasn’t the right player for the right opponent, I say there’s been more to it than that.

Now, down to my trade proposal: trade DAT for a low round pick. That’s the best scenario I can see for Thomas at the moment. When he gets in games he appears too much of a lightweight to be taken seriously or get consistent production. Let me reiterate that DAT has my favorite highlights of any player I’ve ever seen coming out of college. However, if he’s not traded now, the only value he has in a trade is likely lost. So, if John Dorsey can make a trade like that happen in the next four days, he will. Otherwise, I suspect we will see DAT walking at year’s end and in which case we’ll receive no compensation.

There’s a piece that just came out yesterday by CBS Sports called, “Agents Take: Ten bold deals that need to happen at the trade deadline” and what may be of interest to Chiefs fans is the mention of the Bengals CB Darqueze Dennard. While Dennard sits 4th on their CB depth chart you have to consider that a strength of the Bengals is their Defensive Backfield. Come on John, I know you and Andy love those DBs with mad potential… and you must have some cards up your sleeve that Bengals GM Mike Brown would “Go Fish” for. Right?

Now, I know my trade suggestion wasn’t very “dreamy,” so let’s hear a juicy one!. Hit me with your best shot. Fire away!
