Oh Give Me Mahomes: Pros and Cons To Starting The Rookie

Should the Chiefs elect to start Mahomes this week, as most anticipate they will, it will have zero effect on the Chiefs, but a pretty big impact on the fans. Some fans are dying to see Mahomes, some are just happy that the playoffs are locked up and view this week’s game, vs Denver, as completely irrelevant. Whether you’re in the Alex Smith club, or in a club with Ma-homies’, you have valid reasons to want Mahomes to start or sit.

Mahomes Club: Why Chiefs Should Start Him: In the NFL, experience is key. Unless Smith is going to win you a Super Bowl, he‘s basically wasting snaps. Sunday will be a great opportunity for Mahomes to learn, and the quicker he learns, the quicker he starts for real, all the time. On a more basic level though, it’ll be fun to watch. Pretty sure I haven’t watched a QB start a game for the Chiefs who they actually drafted in my lifetime. Mahomes will likely make some mistakes, but it’ll all be worth it to see some of those beautiful throws that no other QB can make. Plus, if the Red Zone Offense actually works for once, we’ll have all the bragging rights.

Alex Smith Club: Why Chiefs Should Start Mahomes: If the Chiefs are going to go anywhere in the playoffs, Smith is going to be the main reason. The last thing you want to do is expose him to a rival defense, and a marked tendency to play dirty. No reason to have Smith absorbing late hits when Mahomes can do it. As an added bonus, if Mahomes doesn’t look very good, we get to torment his fan club all off-season about how it was a wasted pick and will ruin the organization.

Mahomes Club: Why He Shouldn’t Start: Do you really want to give your rookie QB his first start at Mile High, in the winter, against a defense that’s really solid? If the Chiefs rest Smith, you can bet your sweet bippy they’ll rest Kelce and Hill too. Even though they shouldn’t, fans will form an opinion of Mahomes based on one game, in tough circumstances, with no supporting cast. Yes, everyone should understand this and cut the kid some slack, rather than leaping to judgment. But some people are just looking for an excuse to crush him, why give it to them? We all know Mahomes is the starter next year, lets not jeopardize his off-season by putting him in harms way. An injury now could really hurt his development if it lingers into training camp.

Alex Smith Club: Why Mahomes Shouldn’t Start: Smith is finally getting into a rhythm after his post bye-week slump. Resting Smith may well be rusting Smith. Alex is also posting the best numbers of his career, let him add to those stats, he deserves it.

Further, if Mahomes starts, and has a fantastic game on a fluke (remember how good Nick Foles looked at first?), the Mahomes club will become utterly insufferable. We’ll never hear the end of it. Reid isn’t dumb enough to switch starters after one good game, so Smith is safe from that standpoint. However, when the Chiefs inevitably exit the playoffs, Mahomies will blame Smith rather than a flawed defense and bad OL. We’ll have to hear about how KC could have gone the distance if Reid would’ve just gone with the hot hand.

A good performance by Mahomes would also make it far more likely the Chiefs let Smith go next year. This could easily lead to a scenario where KC dumps the best QB they’ve had in a long time, for an unproven rookie who had one good game. What happens when defenses get some film on Mahomes, and we get to watch another team enjoying Smith’s veteran skills? That’s gonna suck. Let Smith start, maybe he’ll continue to look good enough that Chiefs decide to hang on to him for another year.

Regardless of what we want, Mahomes is almost certain to see at least reps this week. Rather than hoping for bragging rights, we should all try to remember that this is a rookie QB in his first game in a rough situation. If he does well, great, let’s see if it lasts. If he does poorly, don’t panic or go apoplectic, many great QBs have struggled as rookies. As temping as it may be to draw huge conclusions from this game, understand that we’ll know about as much at the end, as we did at the beginning. Whichever club you fall in, we can all hope for one thing: no injuries. Lets get into the playoffs healthy and hope Brady and Roethlesburger suddenly disintegrate. Go Chiefs!

I been waiting for Brady and Ben to disappear with Manning for far too long. But since the road to Minnesota runs thru either Qb or both possibly. Then for the love of GOD please let this be the year we strip sack them off their pedestal in their home stadium infront of the world!!!

    • tm1946

Suspect it will take more than Devine intervention with our current roster. Once was getting killed during a game, HC said…. if you want to stop this blood shed, tackle someone. Well it was a long Friday nite… they were just better than us. Based on my TV set, there are a whole lot of teams better than us and if we shot ourselves in the foot with bad play or flat performances…. they get even better.

    • Chiefly Bacon

Father time is undefeated, but I wish he would get on with it.

  • berttheclock

Meanwhile, in Denver, Jamaal Charles has asked the team for his release. He has been demoted to their Number 4 RB with a rookie starting ahead of him. Vance Joseph said they have had no idea of releasing him. Charles still wants to prove he can run and wants to be available for a playoff team. So……………………….?

    • Chiefly Bacon

I was ready to move on from Charles before most. Now I’m ready to have him back. He’s averaged 4.3 yards per carry, behind Denver’s terrible OL. I don’t think he’s going to be crazy productive here, but Akeem Hunt is averaging negative yards per carry and West is averaging just 4. Wouldn’t hurt to check him out as a depth option.

      • Laurels and limitations

I’m over JC being gone but then I was also the guy complaining about his last contract with KC when I believed the team should have moved on. I’m not trying to holler to the world “I told you so”, but I guess I am, I did and I was right (mark down that I was right on the calendar, it’s a biannual occurrence).

        • Chiefly Bacon

I was pretty much of the same mind, but, at vet minimum, you aren’t gonna find any better depth RBs available right now. If Hunt suffered an injury in the playoffs, we’d be screwed, as the roster currently sits.

          • Laurels and limitations

Oh, I agree that if Hunt goes down KC is in dire straights….I just don’t believe that JC can come in and play significant snaps anymore and even if he did, in the back of my mind I would be expecting him to fumble at the worst time imaginable.

          • Chiefly Bacon

That’s certainly possible. Odds are Chiefs won’t bring him in anyway. Terez Paylor has said he thinks Veach is a guy who’ll be more likely to let a guy go a year early than hang on to him too long. Wouldn’t necessarily fit his MO to bring Charles back. There’s still a big part of me that just wants to see Charles get a SB ring with the Chiefs. Even though I know it’s REALLY unlikely. I can’t quite give up on the idea yet.

          • Laurels and limitations

I certainly understand people wanting to see JC get a ring, with KC at that, but to me it looks to be more about sentimentality than pragmatism.

In regards to Perez’s taek on Veach’s propensity for releasing players earlier than later- thank goodness. Sure, some players will go on to other teams and contribute but the path to salary cap health is through the draft with rookie contracts.

          • Chiefly Bacon

I will say that if Spencer Ware was here and healthy, I wouldn’t give very much thought to bringing Charles on. RB depth has been a problem for Chiefs all year.

          • Laurels and limitations

true, healthy RBs have been a problem for a FEW years in all honesty. Bienemy gets a lot out of his guys but the load is considerable.

          • bring him back, let him retire 5 minutes later as a Chief.

I had blocked the fact that we drafted those guys out of my mind, cause they were terrible. 🙂

      • Laurels and limitations

I kept on waiting for Ricky Stanzi to develop, but the NFL is a cruel, cruel, mistress.

    • Merlin

Chiefs didn’t draft Thigpen. He started for Buffalo a season before the Chiefs signed him. You are right on Croyle.

      • Laurels and limitations

    • drwillez37

Yeah, Dawson is a pretty vague memory as I was pretty young when his career ended, but I had an uncle that loved sports and I watched all kinds of football, baseball and boxing with him as I was growing up.

    • PaulFromNorthMo

Isn’t Croyle the only QB drafted by KC to actually start a game since the stone age? And then he was something like 0-9 as a starter.
So, when was the last time a QB drafted by KC won a game?

This is actually a very exciting time in Chief’s history. We are about to see the dawning of a new age. We’ve tried the rehash QB since the very beginning of the franchise and it hasn’t paid off since the 60s B.C.

The worst part of the impending future is everyone overvaluing every little nuance of Mahomes’ play whether it is good or bad without letting the guy, and team, develop.

    • mnelson52

I couldn’t agree more. I would think even Reid doesn’t know what he has in PM II yet, good or bad. It scares me to think how remarkable some QBs are in college, but are terrible at the next level. We do not have the best track record. I’m still not sure if PM II was Reids choice or Dorseys. I know my choice was Watson. He may not have had some of the qualities they look for in an NFL QB, but he had the one I like best, a nac for not just winning, but winning big games on the big stage.

  • tm1946

Might add, if I had any influence with the team, this would be a hard one to decide about ….. but….. play Mahomes or not, Reid has to try to win this gem…. for pride of taking the AFC West, his legacy in the NFL, and all the rest of what it takes to be in this business. If we were playing 49ers or Mia (again)… a throw away game but this is Denver…. win or get buried by “pretender” in the media and on AFC West sites. For me, time for the Chiefs to kick ass (even if it does not matter) or can you seriously say this team is among the elite?

    • Laurels and limitations

I don’t like the idea of laying down for ANY game. The NFL guarantees every team 16 games a season, and hard working fans pay good money to see them play those games. If I was some unlucky soul that paid exorbitant airline, hotel, rental car, food, etc.etc. to see a game and the 2nd-3rd team was trotted out I’d be pissed.

    • good points for both you and L&L below. I think you go on a role and keep it going. They start everybody and kick ass and go into the playoffs on a winning streak. That is my view.

      • mnelson52

But what if they start everyone, then Denver has their only good offensive game of the year and we lose on the any given Sunday thing? Would they still go into playoffs with confidence, or would they be thinking here we go again

        • if they did that, they don’t deserve to be in the post season anyway. Further, with that losing streak? No matter what, they may not deserve to be in post season play anyway. That stuff should never have occurred — but it did. Of course, I am in the Reid is a big part of the problem camp. What do I know?

  • Chiefs-Kings-A’s

“My knowledge of the game I feel like has taken tremendous leaps,” Mahomes said after the Chiefs clinched the AFC West by beating the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. “Just having a full season, getting to watch [starting quarterback Alex Smith] having a successful year, watching how he studies and how he game-plans and does those things, I feel like it’s helped my game a ton.”—-Patrick Mahomes

The Smith/Mahomes scenario reminds me of the Favre/Rodgers one years ago….Chief fans have no idea how fortunate they are that their prized 1st round QB gets to watch and learn the game from one of the best in the league and not get immediately thrown into the fire and expected to turn an organization around like Alex did..(twice)

When Mahomes # is called, he will step behind an offensive line that has taken years to create and mature……he will be throwing to arguably the best TD and WR in the league……..he will be handing the ball off to one of the most exciting RBs in the NFL.

If he is as talented as all of us are hoping he is….the table is being set.

    • PaulFromNorthMo

So maybe this was the Dorsey/Reid plan all along.

    • the Favre/Rodgers comparison is apt and I think should be noted. Further, I myself have believed that Smith should be the starter in 2018 for this reason. Or, you can think of Montana/Young in Frisco. But the QB departures of Favre and Montana had their own intrigue, eh?

    • with a RB who is worthy, and if one of our guys develops behind Hill? Watch out. Oh. Draft another OLman please Veach!

    • mnelson52

Even though PM II has learned a lot watching Smith, that doesn’t mean he’s able to aply that knowledge and make it work. Ford has been taking lessons and learning from two of the best pass rushers in the NFL, but he still doesn’t seem to be able to apply that knowledge on the field with a good success rate.

      • PaulFromNorthMo

It’s been noted in the past that Ford hasn’t put in the hard work to improve himself. Even Hali said at one time that Ford needs to put forth more effort (my words). It’s almost as if Ford can ball, he just doesn’t like to.
On the other hand, indications point to Mahomes being a hard worker and loves the game. Like any other player ever, we’re never going to know what he is capable of if he never gets on the field.

        • I don’t think 2018 will see Ford around for us to give him an 8 hour boot.

        • Tazmosis

Agreed. Time we all just admit it, Ford is a complete bust and a waste of talent and a waste of a first round draft pick

    • Tazmosis

But remember, Rogers sat behind Favre for 4 years, much like Garoppolo sat behind Brady 4 years. Mahomes maybe needs another year or two to develop. But, because of two factors, that won’t happen. One, is cap space. The Chiefs need the money they would pay Smith to improve the roster. Two, they know Smith’s limitations as a QB. He has taken them as far as possible. He is a really good QB, but he isn’t the guy to take them to a title. But, like you say, the table is set. Now, we are just waiting for the Reid and Mahomes to show us what’s for dinner.

  • freshmeat62

I’d sit Smith, Hill, Hunt, Kelce, and Houston. I’d like to sit the entire o-line, but since they have absolutely no depth that is impossible. If they do start Mahomes, Smith said something reported at one of the other Arrowhead sites that was interesting. He’ll be coming in cold w/ 4 months since he’s seen any ‘live bullets’ in preseason. To me he seems extremely confident, but If he comes in and throws 3 INT’s that could have a devastating effect on a young psyche. I don’t think he’ll throw 3 INT’s, but even 1, and like was said, the anti-Mahomes-ites will be crowing.

  • PaulFromNorthMo

Regardless of who plays and who sits, the weather in Denver is a lot nicer than in KC for the upcoming week, so field conditions should be decent, at least not frozen solid.

Butker was named ST Player of the Week, again. So he now has a franchise record 36 FGs in one season. He is 36 out of 40 in just 12 games. That really shows the ineptness of our offense, especially in the red zone.
Just think that if even ¼ of those FGs were TD’s, one or two against the Giants, one in Oakland. It’s probably asking too much to have both against Pittsburgh.

    • Laurels and limitations

yup, soooo many FGs in lieu of TDs. I think about this every time the pundits talk Buttkicker up. Kid’s good, but I’d be happier if we heard his name a lot less, lol.

      • PaulFromNorthMo

Oh, I’m happy to talk about kick offs through the end zone for touchbacks! lol

        • Laurels and limitations

          tru dat

  • PaulFromNorthMo

I understand everyones thoughts about keeping momentum and kicking division opponents butts, but here’s a different take. If we go to Denver and rest our major starters, the worst that can happen is we lose a meaningless game. But by “allowing” the donkeys to win, depending on how other teams do and tie breakers, a win by Denver could push them out of the top 10 in next years draft, thereby weakening their draft position. That could help us in the long term.

    • Chiefly Bacon

This is where I’m at. Good teams don’t worry about losing meaningless games.

    • not the worst; the worst is they are rested and play their playoff game flat and farting. We have seen that with this current team since Reid/Dorsey took over.

      • Laurels and limitations

        agreed.

  • Laurels and limitations

    It’s official…..VIVA LA MAHOMES!!!!!

Andy Reid says he will consider factors like Mitch Schwartz snaps played streak in sitting starters. "Doesn't mean I'll do it but I'm gonna look at it," Big Red said— Arrowhead Pride (@ArrowheadPride) December 27, 2017

    • mnelson52

Hasn’t Schwartz played every snap of his career

      • Laurels and limitations

something along those lines…every snap, or not missed a game. I’m having trouble recollecting exactly which.

  • Chiefly Bacon

The question is, with a rookie at the reigns, will Reid let him go out there and sling it, or will he keep the offense contained to basic stuff.

    • PaulFromNorthMo

The answer might be another question, does Hill sit or play? I’m going to assume Kelce sits. But then, I think Reid has to let Mahomes be Mahomes.

      • Chiefly Bacon

I think we’ll see DeMarcus Robinson light it up big time.

        • mnelson52

That wouldn’t surprise me. I would also like to see a little more of what Charles can do.

        • PaulFromNorthMo

That would be nice, maybe we’ll sit Wilson and see some Chesson also.

    • Laurels and limitations

I’m split 50/50 on this question. On one hand, we know Reid likes to keep it conservative (supposedly) and I also think that Reid will want to keep Mahomes psyche safe by creating high percentage situations. On the other hand Reid likes to let his players be themselves so I wonder if Reid would truly attempt to take the stripes off of the tiger? Either way won’t surprise me one bit.

Could see a pretty sketchy OL on Sunday. I’m guessing Erving, Witzmann, Fulton Ehinger and Schwartz. Reid is considering allowing Schwartz to start so he can keep his streak of no snaps missed alive.

    • PaulFromNorthMo

You might even through Devey in there somewhere.

      • Chiefly Bacon

What. you got against Devey? We could use some competition on the OL.

  • tm1946

All the shouting and hurrahing are over…. Mahomes gets his first start. Of course, most around him may be getting their first start also. Supposedly, Denver will run out their first string.

Speculation – win the game…. Mahomes is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Dump the whole OL and let these cheaper guys have the starter job. Reid is a genius letting his veterans rest.

lose the game…. Mahomes was playing with subs and what did you expect to would happen? Mahomes is no good. Starters for this game should all be fired, subs anyway. Reid is an idiot/genius… kept Alex from getting hurt, should have played Alex to win game. What a fraud, did not try hard enough to win.

Third option – someone get hurt…KCMO police patrol the viaducts to prevent jumpers.

May be the one game this year with the highest TV audience in MO/KAN area. Am betting crime takes a holiday. Of course, the refs were bronco fans, we got screwed (even if we win) and the usual suspects.

Even my wife is excited about seeing PMll and she is a casual fan although being a chiefs fan was in the nuptuals. I have to admit I am intrigued although this could look like a preseason game for the chiefs. And I am sure Nagy/reid will not have any exotic offensive plays working. However, considering all the drafted qbs in chiefs history that were bad to aweful it will be fun to take a peek underneath the hood and see if there is a chance that the chiefs got a true #1.

    • Laurels and limitations

It’s no secret that I am a Mahomes’ fan, but I think that I am just as ecstatic about a high-end QB draft pick finally starting for KC. Either way, I’m giddy.

Nagy may be relegated to saying over and over…. do not let our QB get killed. LOL

  • berttheclock

Piggy backing on a comment to the Cleveland Plain Dealer scribe, Bud Shaw, about the naming of the hapless Cleveland Browns. Is it only a coincidence that Charlie Brown was officially brought on board on October 2, 1950 and the pro football team began its venture into the National Football League that same year? So, were the Browns really named after Paul Brown or Charlie? Perhaps, John Dorsey will quickly learn if he has stepped into the era of the Paul Brown days, or the expansion days following the Browns moving to Baltimore, or will his venture there will be of the Charlie Brown or Mickey Mouse variety?

    • tm1946

Cleveland Dorsey’s???? does not sound all that good to my ear.

  • berttheclock

Still very happy I had decided to not even watch the game, no matter who started. So, it will, either, be an afternoon with TCM or watch a marathon of DVDs of the excellent soap from Australia, “Rake”. Probably, “Rake” will win out. Great cast, great writing.

  • berttheclock

My reasons for not watching the upcoming game has nothing to do with my feeling about Dorsey taking Mahomes II. I still firmly believe moving up from 27 to 10 to take him and giving away the pick at 91, plus, the 1st round next year was ill conceived and will hurt the Chiefs in many ways.

However, my main reason for not watching the game is it will be an absolutely meaningless game for the Chiefs. No matter if they win or lose and no matter what any other team does in the AFC, the Chiefs are locked in to be the Number 4 team in the playoffs. That is settled. I, also, understand the NFL is money driven. That stops what I would love to see any team locked in a meaningless situation could do and that is to forfeit the game. Why risk any injuries to anyone? But, the league will never allow any team to forfeit a game.

I am expecting a fun game but would not bet a nickle on the Chief’s winning. One, Reid does not have it in him to win one specific game and broncos are playing for next season, as in – we will be back in 2018, see our last game against the Chiefs, really our first game of 2018… PR.

Plus, with Elway wanting to showcase his 2016 1st Rnd QBOTF… you can bet he’ll direct his coaches to make the Chiefs 2017 1st Rnd QBOTF look as bad as possible… and… they have enough of a great D left to pull that off.

Still… in the long run… it won’t mean a thing, whether he accomplishes making Mahomes look bad… or not… in this game.

Suspect it will be more about season ticket renewals. Broncos will continue to have issues next year… raiders will be stronger, Chargers seem to hang around, Chiefs will be the Chiefs…. sort of leave bronco in the rear. Beat the Chiefs, say – see fans we are almost back….buy tickets
