Post Draft: JUST SAYIN’…

Post Draft: JUST SAYIN’…
By John Cooney, PASS2Win.com

THANK YOU… Mack Hollins, Eagles’ 4th round pick. What a pleasure watching your game cutups. You can thrive as a true difference-making wideout in Philly if they give you a full shot of offensive snaps. Alshon Jeffery is on a one-year prove-it deal and Hollins offers Jeffery size, Jeffery speed but a work-ethic far above that of the more ballyhooed new Eagles’ WR1.

So, just what are the Saints up to offensively? Trade away speedy WR Brandin Cooks, ink rugged but fading RB Adrian Peterson, draft Alvin Kamara as a Reggie Bush type and they still have Mark Ingram on board. Really… a Sean Payton-Drew Brees offense based on a ground attack?

In reviewing his college game film I compared RB James Conner to Steelers’ RB LeVeon Bell in many ways. PITT’s draft guys must see the same thing as they tagged the Pitt Panther RB for themselves. Uh, Bell has missed a bundle of games the past few seasons due to injuries and suspensions and DeAngelo Williams is no longer around. Conner has 2017 fantasy chops folks.

Can’t believe how long QB Nathan Peterman lasted (Buffalo-5th round). He already is a better passer than Bills’ 2nd year QB Cardale Jones and Tyrod Taylor is always playing to prove it. Nice grab Buffalo; lucky he was still there.

Tampa Bay RB Doug Martin is getting a boat load of public praise from Coach Koetter and GM Jason Licht. Martin starts the season suspended. Me thinks Bucs brass is pumping up Martin’s trade value. They got a gem in 5th rounder Jeremy McNichols and added pass game weaponry this off-season (DeSean Jackson, picks WR Chris Godwin, TE OJ Howard). Martin’s role is greatly reduced if he stays.

OK, HONESTLY! Chicago may have strung together the worst draft I’ve seen in years, if not ever. Nothing fits! Where’s the plan? The entire draft was a reach starting with QB Mitchell Trubisky. He can play, but trading up one spot and losing draft picks to nab him 2nd overall? It only got worse from there. Was ANY other club drafting TE Adam Shaheen in the 2nd round? The 3rd?

And making matters even worse is word that GM Pace made his trade up for Trubisky and gave up picks without talking to HC Fox. Yeah, that’s not going to go over very well. Not only is Coach Fox pissed-off the projected starting QB, Mike Glennon, who feels betrayed and is going to play with a cloud over his head now.

Bears made the Browns look like draft geniuses.

Brady Quinn 2.0: Browns drafting another Notre Dame QB that may very well be forced into playing before being ready. DeShone Kizer needs polishing and time to mature; Browns have not been very good in that capacity for QBs.

Houston, you got no problem at QB… FINALLY! The Texans have a winner in draft pick Deshaun Watson. He’s perfect for that offense RIGHT NOW! HC Bill O’Brien, NUK Hopkins, Will Fuller, Lamar Miller, D’Onta Forman, dome stadium… what’s not to like? And Watson is NOT a 49 MPH thrower in live action. Fact is, this is a ready-to-go pro passer with terrific wheels to boot. Fantasy fun jus ahead.

Did 2017 Mr. Irrelevant become the best QB on the Broncos roster? Chad Kelly got the final call out of the draft after Denver boss John Elway talked to Kelly’s uncle, HOF passer Jim Kelly. Chad has his off-field junk and injuries to deal with, but his best football is ahead of him, and he’s got NFL chops… JUST SAYIN’!

Grambling fleet WR Chad Williams is a perfect patch for Coach Arians’ vertical air attack. Coach BA grabber Williams in the 3rd round… that’s draft gravitas. Eyes on Chad Williams folks!

The first 4 Falcons’ picks made sense and serve purpose, but what’s with tabbing RB Brian Hill in the 5th? He’s more of a plugger compared to Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman.

Ravens will be Ravens, using the first 4 selections on defense. Matter-of-fact, Baltimore didn’t burn a single pick on an offensive skill position; 5 on D and 2 guards.

Hey Buffalo, just what does rookie Zay Jones bring that now departed Robert Woods didn’t? No, really? Less cost? OK.

Panthers added 2 key offensive pieces that mostly handle the rock near the line of scrimmage; RB Christian McCaffrey and WR/RB Curtis Samuel. Looks like the game planners for Carolina want to limit Cam Newton’s reads and improvisational miscues, get the ball out of his hands quicker and with more focus. And that Carolina wideout group is … uh… underwhelming?

But Panthers’ top receiver Kelvin Benjamin appears to (once again?) be over-indulging. I worried about Benji having weight issues coming out of college and his “softness” being a cause for repeated injuries. Well, Coach Rivera is none-too-pleased about Benjamin being heavy enough to make comment. Benjamin and fellow hefty wideout Devin Funchess can sure as heck spin the scales, can’t they.

Cincy had 11 draft picks this year, popping bigtime weapons on offense with WR John Ross and RB Joe Mixon. They added 5 selections just in rounds 4 and 5. In the 4th WR Josh Malone was secured… watch that one as well. The Bengals offense is LOADED!!!!

The Browns draft actually looks good, despite the trade downs. However, the QB spot remains unanswered, even with the selection of Kizer. Love the David Njoku (TE) call in the 1st. He’s a top-shelf talent, but probably not in 2017… just 20 years old and still maturing.

7 of the Cowboys’ 10 picks went to the defense.

Broncs didn’t look at a RB until the 6th round (De’Angelo Henderson). Davontae Booker is in play for a breakout campaign… Booker it!

Lions addressed the defense with 4 of their first 6 choices. But TE Michael Roberts (4th) is a looker’ Detroit honored the 5th year of current TE Eric Ebron’s rookie deal, so more 2-TE sets ahead of DET.

Packers waited to the middle of their draft to tend to their RB needs, a smart move in this deep RB class. And they done-good; Jamaal Williams (BYU- 4th) and Aaron Jones (UTEP- 5th)… NICE! Love Jones… terrific receiver and underrated rusher.

Coach McCarthy insists Ty Montgomery is the lead RB, the starter. Yeah, OK! But in a rotation, fanballers. Monty is a huge matchup headache for LBs in pass coverage.

Indy scored well in the first 3 defensive picks but found a sleeper in RB Marlon Mack. No, most know what he brings, but he fits the Colts offense and can now slowly siphon touches from warrior Frank Gore. Mack has later season value… JUST SAYIN’.

Doesn’t RB Leonard Fournette make so much sense for the Jags? He just runs so angry but carries the wood to make it pay off. But don’t overlook a sneaky good decision to grab WR Dede Westbrook in the 4th. WR Allen Hurns is often nicked up and Marqise Lee started to show his goods last season, but he too is oft-injured.

Hey KC, best believe Pat Mahomes is the starting QB in 2018. Alex Smith carries huge cap woes for 2018.

See that smirk on Chargers’ QB Philip Rivers. That’s what happens when you add a Mike Williams to a pass-catching stable already flushed with talent. If Keenan Allen returns full-go and Tyrell Williams continues his ascension of play, Rivers is set for one of his best years ever.

Must be a new coaching regime for the Rams; they made 2 WR adds in the draft. Cooper Kupp is arguably the best router in this draft and Josh Reynolds brings length and skills to use it. Terrific 3rd and 4th round use here.

Have you checked in on Mike Nazarek and Fantasy Football Mastermind lately? Go! Go now! Mike revamped FFM with a sparkling new look and feel. OUTSTANDING! We already know the fantasy football information at Mastermind is 2nd-to-none. I’m proud to be a part of the good works produced there. I’m telling you, fantasy football champions are “made” at Fantasy Football Mastermind. www.ffmastermind.com

Eagles’ RB stable consists of Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Byron Marshall, recovering Ryan Mathews and now rookie Donnell Pumphrey. Other than Mathews, there isn’t much junk in the trunk in the Birds’ backfield.

Giants added RB Wayne Gallman, a more of the same thing move. Gallman plays quite similar to departed and dancin’ star Rashad Jennings. Paul Perkins now is the lead back for Big Blue… ZZZZZZZ!

Redskins didn’t make any big splashes at WR this draft. They added Tyrelle Pryor via free agency, but bet the house they are counting on redshirt rookie Josh Doctson to make it back full-speed from Achilles woes. Doctson is a supreme slant router that can YAC (before his injury). Eye up the 2nd year wideout and his progress.

Does Joe Mixon spell trouble for Jeremy Hill or Giovani Bernard? Bernard is coming back from injury but Cincy lost pass-catcher Rex Burkhead to the Pats. Big Hmmmmmm on Hill here.

Bengals selected CB/DB Brandon Wilson of Houston in the 6th. Wilson blew up his workouts, running a 4.36-forty, skying for a 41 vertical and exploding an 11’1 broad jump. He has some power too, as the 5’10-198 athlete benched 225 pounds 24 times. I said “athlete”; Cincy has Wilson slated not as a DB but… running back. Wilson carried the rock 37 times for Houston in 2015, netting 5.1 YPC and scoring twice. He’s one I’ll be watching.

Picks I like that could pay off sooner than later:
Carlos Henderson (3), DEN… legit WR3 for the Broncs, finally!
D’Onta Foreman (3), HOU… spells Lamar Miller but can carry to mail if Miller can’t.
Stacy Coley (7), MIN… watch this guy look like a seasoned pro in pre-season.
Davis Webb (3), NYG… OK, not this year but there are real NFL tools here.
Chad Hansen (4), NYJ… Eric Decker-ish.
Shelton Gibson (5), PHL… John Ross-lite playmaker that is badly needed for QB Carson Wentz.
Christopher Carson (7), SEA… a rugged banger like the rest of Seattle’s backfield. Why not! Watch his college tape.
Joe Williams (4), SF… Ok, lots of college issues, but his time AWAY from the game last year lit a competitive fire that torched the opposition. Carlos Hyde? Not HC Shanny’s guy, remember that; Williams is for sure.

Remember, when I’m just sayin’… it ain’t perfect, but it’s excellent!
