Senior Bowl Game Thread

I’m watching the Senior Bowl game now and thought some of you might want to watch the game and comment about it.

Enjoy.

Anyone notice that Mike Mayock has already highlighted one of my favorite low round CBs, Damontae Kazee? He’ll be flying up the draft boards now but just two weeks ago he was a 225th ranked guy. Would love to see the Chiefs take him in the second round … if he lasts that long.

    • mnelson52

Who was it that made that great catch at the back of the end zone that the refs in my opinion got wrong?

      • ladner morse

I think it was OJ Howard.

        • ladner morse

          No… wrong guy.

      • freshmeat62

Zay Jones. He was also the one that had the TD called back because of holding call.

  • ladner morse

I’m trying to fix my eyes on offensive player… because that’s what the Chiefs need, especially along the OL.

    • mnelson52

I’m pretty much just following the ball for now, but I am recording to watch all the players later.

    • ladner morse

I’ve like QB Webb’s outing and think he improved his drat stock a lot today.

  • mnelson52

I didn’t really understand the call on the 2 point failed conversion. The ball was caught, got 2 feet down, then while out of bounds the defender hit his arm to make him juggle it a little. I didn’t realize a defender could make a play out of bounds to cause a juggle.

    • ladner morse

Seemed like it was after the play to me.

  • mnelson52

    lot of fumbles today

  • freshmeat62

Watching QB’s. Webb has had good touch on some throws. Beathard had one. Peterman didn’t impress.

    • ladner morse

I like Beathard on tape but he has not had a good day.

      • freshmeat62

I was kind if p.o.’ed that Fox didn’t play him and Liufau more. Beathard did have one decent long throw and wanted to see him throw more. And Liufau played, what, 1 series, and I don’t think he threw 1 pass. At least Jackson let his QB’s play some. I didn’t see anything that great about Peterman that justified all of his playing time.

    • berttheclock

Yes, you win the prized Laddie Kewpie Doll. The uncle of the Colorado QB is “The Throwin” Samoan”, Jack Thompson.

  • freshmeat62

Is that Al Saunders, Vermeil’s old OC on one of the sidelines? Sure looks like him.

    • ladner morse

It’s him… because he’s on the Browns staff.

    • freshmeat62

About 70# ago I use to run in a bunch of those 5K’s around KC. I saw Saunders line up in the Ground Hog run one time up in the Hunt caves north of the river. So I thought I’d see if I could keep up w/ him and lined up in the group he was in, the 5Min/mile group, which I knew I wasn’t. I kept up w/ him for maybe a mile but then that was too much for me and runners started streaming by. I know I never saw him again so I guess, unlike me, he was in the right grouping.

RB Kareem Hunt has lit it up. He looks like a very good NFL level running back with skills that translate.

    • berttheclock

He is, also, very good catching passes coming out of the backfield. Prior to the Senior Bowl, he was working out at IMG Academy under the supervision of Earnest Byner. No, Byner did not teach him how to drop the ball short of the goal line.

      • berttheclock

In addition, as he played for “Holy” Toledo, he plays with a chip on his shoulder as he feels their players and conference gets over looked.

        • ladner morse

Chips are good. All kinds of chips. 🙂

          • Laurels and limitations

            even octopus flavored chips?

      • ladner morse

No… that would have been a fumble.

  • ladner morse

freshmeat was asking about the compensatory release date so here’s the info on that,

The NFL Compensatory List is usually relaesed within a week of the free agency period beginning. Last year the free agency period bagan on March 9th and the Compensatory picks were announced two days later. Clubs could begin to call free agents on Match 7th but they could sign them until the 9th. So, it’s all done within that week.

The NFL doesn’t give a hard date for the release of those compensatory picks presumably because they want all the time they can get to determine the value of those picks.

    • berttheclock

Also, the official league opening for the new year will be March 9th.

    • freshmeat62

      Thanks!

  • ladner morse

QB Antonio Pipkin is an impressive kid. He’s only 6-1 but he has a quick release and has touch when he needs it. He played in a video-game offense at Tiffin and it was a small school but he has some potential.

  • ladner morse

love the reading ability of S Lorenzo Jerome. He had 2 INTs in the Senior Bowl and his second one was a great study in how to read-and-react to the QMs eyes. He took off for the ball long BEFORE it was thrown.

Love to see that kind of football knowledge in action.

  • ladner morse

WR Zay Jones has had a great game. Stock has gone WAY up in this one.

    • Laurels and limitations

      145 yds a game…”catches everything”…yup, his stock has risen.

    • ladner morse

After his last TD… he should be shooting up the boards.

Ater being ranked at 89th by CBS Sport (end of the 3rd round)… you can expect to see him sleeted in the send or even the end of the first round.

      • ladner morse

DraftTek has Zay Jones at 114.

I’ll bet he won’t be ranked that low next week.

  • Laurels and limitations

Didn’t care too much for that statement right there concerning Pipkin “wish they would have let him run earlier, calm some of them nerves”.

    • ladner morse

Yeah, the stage will only get bigger for him but I think if he calms down and gets his reps he could be really good.

      • mnelson52

I think he will be down the board but have a fairly decent ceiling

      • Laurels and limitations

a maturity thing then, huh? Every player has to go through it, but you also have to hold perspective 1st rounders to a higher standard. I guess there is also a shortage of pro-ready QBs in this draft also though.

        • mnelson52

I don’t think any are pro ready but could be wrong

          • Laurels and limitations

better learn buddy, I’m following your lead on this thing even though I believe I touted Mahomes first, lol.

        • ladner morse

One of the reasons I think the league should have a smaller Pro league where they can develop guys.

          • berttheclock

            Plus, coaches.

      • berttheclock

His college only has about 4500 students.

  • tm1946

Sorry guys but I prefer the entire college effort instead of one game where you dance after every tackle or first down. In the past the Chiefs have been known for drafting a workout warrior from the combine and the like only to find out a kid with lots of game film will produce when the games count.

    • berttheclock

I am reminded of something Brian Billick has said several times before. He said this at the Underwear Olympics. He said that often he will see something in the workouts, but, he will always head back to watch the actual tapes of games. Often, the two appear to be not in the same sync.

  • ladner morse

I’m a little bit disappointed in the set up for these games. It seems like the aggression is being removed from the game of football. No, I don’t want anyone to get hurt but by not letting the defense plan some blitzes they are taking away the opportunity to truly assess these guys under real game conditions. Would that make the offense at more of a disadvantage? maybe but they can always leave a FB in to help protect more.

Just doesn’t seem like the same game any more.

    • Laurels and limitations

probably facing a large amount of players not wanting to play because of injury concerns and whatnot, AND they are trying to showcase exciting, offensive plays because they are more exciting to the occasional viewer.

    • freshmeat62

It does seem that they are trying to turn the game to ‘paddy cake’. But I will say that I consider the Pro Bowl game tomorrow one of the dumbest things. I think it’s crazy for these big guys banging bodies for something as worthless as this game is. I hate to see someone get hurt playing a meaningless game. Give them a nice dinner and a plaque.

      • mnelson52

On the other hand, these guys can make as much with 30 minutes of play as a lot of people make working all year.

      • ladner morse

I’d like to see them turn it into a Pro Bowl Olympics with the players competing in several different event… maybe even like a return to the combine… but watching a game that isn’t really a game for them… is ludicrous. Something I stopped watching years ago. I can’t even recall the last Pro Bowl I watched. It totally holds no meaning anymore.

    • mnelson52

I agree. The ability to evaluate becomes much more difficult without letting them play. Even without the blitz, I wasn’t overly impressed with offenses today. The ability of a safety, LB, or corner to blitz is unknown in this game which could add or take away value. Also, the ability of offensive players to pick up the blitz and stunts is unknown which could add or take away from value. No clue how these QBs would react either. If safety is the main reason of this, then maybe these guys are in the wrong sport. Maybe the less risk they take, the less they should be paid in the NFL.

  • Laurels and limitations

PFF released their yearly awards: Best receiver is a RB, I bet Poe had a higher completion and TD/CATCH ratio.

  • berttheclock

It will be interesting to see the players who will be invited to the Underwear Olympics.

  • berttheclock

Great thread over at CBS Sports concerning MVPs in the NFL. No, not QBs or RBs or even WRs, but, how drafting Zack Martin, the LOT from Notre Dame and then moving him to OG changed the entire offense of the Cowboys. I saw how Steve Hutchison, the former OG from Michigan, changed Seattle into a contender for the Super Bowl. Any great team MUST have a great OG at LOG and they are worth paying top dollars for and if you can find one in the 1st round, take him. I would love to see the Chefs take Forrest Lamp, but, I am afraid his stock will move higher than 27. However, Dan Feeney, the rabid road grader from Indiana would really improve the offensive line of the Chiefs, which at present is about average at best.

    • Laurels and limitations

all good and grand, building through the trenches and all that, but if an impact player such as an QB, OLB, ILB, Safety, or WR is there at 27 you go there first imho. KC’s line is average as a whole, which is better then the majority of the league.

      • I posted on Frank’s thread why I believe Linebacker is a huge risk for the Chiefs in 2017 both inside and outside. That said, I do want them to get a top OL who can do the deal out of the gate. I don’t care if he is going to play LT or RG or whatever but a top guy.

    • freshmeat62

That Temple guy that Mayock was going on about looks like he can push people around too. And what happened to Lamp? The 1st day of practice there was talk about him, but he isn’t even on the roster now.

    • ladner morse

I have lived through the Sports talk of Dallas endlessly droning on about how Zack Martin was the best pick ever. Why? It’s because of who they didn’t pick instead. Anyone what to guess? That’s right Mr. Johnny Football himself. For Jerry Jones — who was wanting Johnny Manziel a lot — it’s amazing because they DID turn their attention off of a “playmaking QB from Texas”… which is a miracle in itself. Now, that’s even more accentuated here in “Brag D” because ever since Jerry and Jimmy had a falling out in the 1990s and Jimmy left town, the media has been horribly split here about who was at fault and to make a long story short (i know, I know… this is not a short post)… Jerry has gotten little to no credit for the Super Bowl victories of the 90s and everyone wants him to step down as the GM. So, for Jerry to relinquish control of the draft board — on day one of what has long been the Cowboys biggest day of the year (ever since they stopped winning Super Bowls) — and allow Zack Martin to “complete” that offensive line, was more than a miracle.

My hope is that the Chiefs have the inner strength to select the best offensive lineman available in this draft and move him to OG no matter where he’s had success previously. The Chiefs are a couple of players away from even sniffing top ten OL territory… so that’s the least they could do.

Did anyone see where if Ballard goes to Colts, he wants Toub as his HC? Reported by La Canfora

    • ladner morse

      Noooo…. where???

      • mnelson52

bleacher report i believe is where i read it

    • I’d hate that. Two at once? It would be, imnsho, a good move by Ballard.
