Sunday’s Training Camp: More Than Practice

Screen Shot 2016-07-24 at 9.35.52 PMThe Kansas City Cheifs had an abbreviated practice on Sunday morning truncated by lightening. So, they moved indoors, I understand, which is someplace out of reach for me. However, I got some great tape on the outdoor practice they did have, the best tape of a practice I’ve ever gotten simply because of the close-ups. At one point I thought I was part of a reality show because the offensive linemen had moved their drills closer and closer to me until they moved over right next to the fence which I just so happened to be standing at.

I wish I could have stayed in Kansas City longer to attend more practices but taxes and my last year of teaching are calling my name in the next two week.

Enjoy!

Practice began with light stretching.

Coach Andy Reid was taking complete advantage of both practice fields and had groups of players covering nearly every inch of the practice space. Here, a group was going over catching punts and kickoff returns.

In this one, WR Kashif Moore drops it, and I don’t know if you can hear it on this tape but, at camp he let out an audible groan heard by everyone. He was not a happy camper.

Then the rain began to come down… but when the lightening struck nearby everyone did an “exit stage left”… but it was to the right for the Chiefs players.

I was totally deflated (no reference intended) and forced to the gates of help… along with the rest of the masses. Fortunately for me, the blanket I brought with me was plastic on one side.

What would an experience covering the Chiefs be without the appropriate attire….

What do you think Chiefs fans? For a short outdoor practice, the team sure got a lot of good teaching and learning in.

Absolutely fantastic post. No, not the same as being there but still great stuff nonetheless. I noticed that Conley had great make up speed because that lob over his shoulder was n.a.s.t.y. and even though he gave a grunt he put himself in position. I thought that tracking the ball in the air was one of Conley’s faults last season so hopefully this is a sign for the positive.
    Btw, cool shirt.

        Kashif Moore, fringe player.

        • Chiefs-Kings-A’s

If he can’t catch it without pads and when the coaches are grading him, I sure wouldn’t trust him with pads on in a game

          • Laurels and limitations

Gotta keep in mind that our very own Jamaal Charles drops an inordinate amount of passes himself, which are easier to field than punts, and he is a game changer by anyone’s definition. I’m not labeling until I see them in live action.

Even though I could not hear it, Lad said that he gave out an audible groan of disgust and I like that. It means that he understands he messed up and also that he has to do better. He’ll either come back double focused or be among the first line of cuts. Times yours Mr. Moore.

I will say this about the camp activities I saw the past two days…….. Everyone is intense and everyone is going all out all the time. There’s a different atmosphere this year. • Laurels and limitations

          • Laurels and limitations

No, that is fact. Going into the playoffs the talking heads stated “All you have to do is score 38 and you win” against the Chiefs. And it was true.

          • Chiefs-Kings-A’s

Unfortunately I remember it well. What I would give for that offense with this defense.

          • Laurels and limitations

That guy sucks. Too old, too slow, eyesight is going bad and the most troubling, he hates rap music so he would probably be getting in fights at practice.

          • ladner morse

THAT”S exactly why they are drafting him… to help make practices… interesting… again.

Seeing Ehinger standing next to the other lineman just reaffirms that maybe, just maybe, the pundits undersold his frame when they said he might be maxed out. He could use a year in the gym, but he looks solid enough.

    • ladner morse

I watched him… he looks sharp. So did LDT. I could see why they say he plays with a nasty edge.

      • Laurels and limitations

LDT or Ehinger? I saw LDT walking into the tunnel a few times, that guy is a monster! If LDT gets his feet moving he might finally break out.

        • ladner morse

LDT did some unicycle workouts this offseason in hopes of improving both his feet and balance.

        • drwillez37

Introducing my daughter, Erin Morse. Erin just flew to L.A. a week ago to be present for the premiere of a movie she was in called, “The Bet.”

I’m one proud pop. Here’s her IMDB page:

      http://www.imdb.com/name/nm6343099/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t42

      • PaulfromnorthMO

        Cool, and congrats.

      • berttheclock

Truly bad timing as the late great Sergio Leone would have loved working with her eyes on close ups. Beautiful and piercing eyes.

        • ladner morse

She really is beautiful (see didn’t get it from moi) and what makes her more beautiful is…… she’s good person.

          • berttheclock

Quick question. Did she grow up in MissourI? There is another beautiful actress in “The Bet” named Erin and she is from St Louis.

          • ladner morse

I lived 21 years in MO. Raised Erin there.

Don’t know the other Erin… but my daughter does. My Erin is friends with the guys who wrote and produced “The Bet” and since Erin has won many acting award previously (plus she has a Master’s degree in Dramatic Arts from CSUN),,, naturally they would want her in their movie.

          • berttheclock

            Ah, CSUN, the Matadors.

          • ladner morse

Benn there to watch her act as well as direct…… ole!

          • PaulfromnorthMO

Yes, a very nice looking young lady. How old is she if you don’t mind me asking?

          • ladner morse

37… looks like she’s in her 20s… she’s a California girl and eats healthy every single day! (although she grew up in Blue Springs Missouri)

          • PaulfromnorthMO

Wow, you’re right, I guessed her at mid-twenties. My oldest is 36, but has had a number of health problems and unfortunately she looks it. My youngest is 28, a high school teacher and she gets mistaken for a student.

          • ladner morse

I consider my daughter a close friend. It is “That”….. which I am most proud of.

          • PaulfromnorthMO

Understood, I have a close relationship with all three of my kids.

          • ladner morse

It makes a big difference the you can have an honest (grown up) talk with your kids does’t it.

          • PaulfromnorthMO

I think so, I’ve never lied to mine, even if the truth might not feel good, and they know that they will get an honest answer from me regardless. But the cool part is when they call or come by and ask for advice. My oldest is kinda crafty and makes Christmas gifts, she made a stenciled sign for me a few years back that says “If at first you don’t succeed, ask Dad for help”.

          • ladner morse

            omg…. that’s awesome!!!!!! I love it!

          • PaulfromnorthMO

Thanks, it hangs front and center of our living room.

          • ladner morse

I was driving to LA two years ago with my daughter, after she had flown out to Dallas, and we were in Arizona at an “AUTHENTIC” Indian shop by the side of the road… and Erin comes up to be holding a wooden sign (which I ended up buying) that read… “I laughed so hard… Tears ran down my leg.”

And THATS what I have on the mantle in the middle of my living room. She can make me laugh so much, like no body else. God I love her… can you tell. 🙂

          • PaulfromnorthMO

Sweet, and yes I can tell, but you’ve talked about her before and so I already knew.

          • berttheclock

One thing for sure is Alex Klein, the male lead in “The Bet” may not look like much, but, he certainly, had a bevy of beauties of former crushes to find.

      • dominicscarlatti

Congrats, you must be really proud of her! May she receive many terrific roles going forward…

  • berttheclock

Thanks a ton, Laddie. Great shots. This morning the pads will come on.

    • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

IMO, it doesn’t mean anything until the pads come on.

  • berttheclock

One player to watch after pads come on will be Travis, the TE. Can he take hits and hold on to the ball? I always question any words coming from Teicher, but, he claims Childress told him the Chiefs plan to use multiple TE formations this year and they may carry 4 TEs. Parker is the heaviest at 265 pounds and he has responded to catching passes so far in camp. So, it looks as though that 4th TE slot may well come down to a contest between Travis and Parker. One year, when, Dorsey was still with the Packers, they did carry 5 TEs, but, that was due to Finley approaching free agency. 5 would be highly unlikely for the Chiefs.

Speaking of the Packers, shame they have so few fans following them. Had a Family Night practice at Lambeau and only 66,397 fans showed up.

    • drwillez37

Great point i too worry about Kelce and his hands..he needs to strengthen them mitts because if he’s going to be a reliable go to guy he needs to hold that ball with all of his might

  • berttheclock

I noticed some comments from another site which mocked the Chiefs practicing so many screen passes at St Joe. However, as noted elsewhere, when, you have an athletic offensive line and a back such as West, plus, JC, why not use them as yet another option? Much of this is based on Andy Reid’s heavy usage of bubble screens in Philly, but, they can effective is mixed with other options. Childress is going to have more weapons this coming year.

  • berttheclock

I love to see quality on both sides of the ball. It helps in playing against opponents, of course, but, it really helps hone players at training camp when the best have to perform against the other best. Noticed the problems Josh Norman had in the Redskins’ training camp when both Garcon and DeSean Jackson “welcomed” him to the Redskins. Sort of a “You did what in Carolina?”

  • berttheclock

Laddie, on one of the photos you posted, it showed the height of Mathews standing with the other wide outs. Kinda hard to make the 53 just being a Red Zone and move the chains on needed 1st downs specialist, but, he may well surprise many.

    • ladner morse

I know…. both of us like this guy but the Chiefs are having more Competition at WR like never before……. in my very “short-term memory.”

  • berttheclock

I view the extension given to Fisher based on expectations of what he will do from this time forward. I see no difference between this and what he was paid after being drafted with the 1st pick. His initial contract was based on expectations going forward and not on what he had done at Central Michigan.

    • PaulfromnorthMO

Exactly, it’s kinda hard to believe the Chiefs would have given Fisher this kind of extension if they thought he would never be a good player.

      • berttheclock

This was in response to something jim wrote recently about wanting to only pay players for what they had done, plus, this is a topic up on Joel T’s early AM thread over at AP.

        • PaulfromnorthMO

Paying for their past would be fine if we waited until the future to pay them at all.

  • berttheclock

Just noted an excellent response by PaulfromnorthMO to an outstanding thread by Lyle G at some unmentioned site, where the discussion concerned the contracts of Berry and Fisher. Paul, you were very correct.

    • PaulfromnorthMO

      Thanks Bert.

      • berttheclock

        Just checkin’ on you, youngin.

    • ladner morse

While in K.C. I heard it stated on 810 radio… “you don’t pay guys for what they have done… you pay them for what you believe they are about to do.” There in lies the basic difference between Berry and Fisher.

      • berttheclock

One thing Lyle G mentioned was the age difference when the contracts would be up and the difference between OTs and safeties at those ages.

        • ladner morse

Yes, I read and the commented on Lyle’s piece. He is a wonderful writer and makes great point.

I wish we had Lyle here… he would get more comments and be able to carry on a conversation with readers without being cussed at. Here, I can make the writers into Moderators and give them the ability to delete a comment… like I did yesterday when Tony Parker posted a Broncos graphic. While I like having guys like Tony around… they must respect that this is a Chiefs site. Period.

          • berttheclock

          • PaulfromnorthMO

          • ladner morse

I still go there but this is becoming the place the other wished it coulda or shoulda been. Keep it up..Go Chiefs!!!

  • berttheclock

Laddie, when you were near the offensive linemen, yesterday, did you notice if the six six 320 pound OG, Keven Devey, had his tuba with him and was he twirling it When, he marched with the American Forks High School band in Utah, he used to twirl his tuba.

    • ladner morse

SURRRRE….. he carried it with him and used to knock other linemen over with…. as you could tell by the videos I posted, clear as day.

American “Forks” ??? Kinda the opposite of the European Spoons… or the deadly South American Knives?

      • berttheclock

When, he was in grade school, he had a major problem which affected his legs. As a result, he had to only play in the band until his legs healed and he could play football. The reason he is a bit older is due to his 2 year missionary (LDS) stint in Costa Rica. Therein, lies the Andy Reid connection.

        • ladner morse

I grew up in the “R”LDS church (but am no longer associated with them in any way)… and so I understand many of the Mormon traditions.

          • berttheclock

Interesting that the wife of Joseph Smith ended up marrying a fellow who was very much a part of the early RLDS.

          • ladner morse

As I understand it… there were 6 different factions which the church split into in 1860 when Joseph Smith was shot in a jailhouse in Nauvoo, Illinois by a militia group (back in the day when we allowed people to “open carry”)…. anyways… and one splinter group went to Utah with Brigham Young while the second largest group went to Independence MO. which is the HOLY LAND for RLDS types to this day (and they now call themselves the “Community of Christ”)

          • PaulfromnorthMO

Their “Garden of Eden”, is it Adam-Ondi-Ahman is not that far from where I live. Well, less than an hour drive.

          • ladner morse

          • PaulfromnorthMO

North Central Mo. house values are never out of the ditch.

Thanks DrWillez…. I was going to go up the come hell or high water… but I was praying for beautiful weather and Lo-&-behold….. you know, Sunday morning was idealic… that is until the cloud ceiling dropped out and dumped a ton of rain on the practice fields… not to mention the 1,000 or so spectators who had shown up early to watch “their” Chiefs. I loved going their and wish I could have stayed in town to go every day. Uploading the vids to Twitter and then waiting till later i the day turned out to be so much better than trying to do a live stream.

      Thanks again!

Aw, c’mon Laddie. You were afraid Joe Btsfsplk was going to follow you to camp with his dark cloud and, apparently, he followed you.

        • berttheclock

Pat and I would have missed you on Sunday. Our plan was to drive over to KU on Sunday, then, come back through Argentine and head up to Oklahoma Joe’s, er, Joe’s, before heading north to St Joe. We were supposed to fly back to PDX on Tuesday. Now, since then, several posters at AP have suggested the mid week is better to head to camp, but, perhaps, next summer.

Well… I was originally planning on Staying until Monday…. but then the weather… and you… when into kahoots… and so I thought it best to get out of Dodge asap.

          • berttheclock

I still cringe thinking about the time I was driving a deuce and one half back to our kaserne in West Germany. Lightning was striking on both sides of the road and I kept wondering “Am I really insulated?”

          • ladner morse

Felt the same way as I drove South on Highway 71 (now called 49) with Lightning all around me for the first hour.

  • berttheclock

It looks as though the pads have been on for about an hour and one half. Lots of bumping and banging going on, I trust. This may well come down to the survival of the bangees.

    • ladner morse

      Wish I was there… I’d slap a few around!

      • berttheclock

Hey, I just posted above a comment I saw over at AP. Childress has some interesting thoughts about teaching his young receivers. He is moving them around as he says the Chiefs do not want any of them to become line runners. He says at this point, most of them are such and he wants them to learn enough so they can play off various defenses and make needed adjustments down field.

        • ladner morse

YES! I’m telling you …. Childress is going to make a big difference in this offense!

        I love it…… Don’t Stop… Don’t Stop…. Don’t Stop…Don’t…. Stop, Don’t… Stop…, Don’t…. AN OLD JOKE>>> SORRY TO AL WHO MAY HAVE READ THIS!!!

        L&L… please keep it going!

    • PaulfromnorthMO

      No surprises there.

    • ladner morse

They’re going to have to get SOMEONE ELSE besides Wilson on the field if this team is really going to progress in 2016.

      • Laurels and limitations

KC needs 10, ten guys able to catch the ball in order to keep defenses honest, and Smith needs to look at getting every single one involved.

        • Adding to my list of 6: Charles, Kelce, Harris and things are looking up for Travis. I heard Parker had a very good showing as well. Then there is West and we haven’t even covered DAT.

      • I am still going with: Maclin, Conley, Streater, the more I hear, Williams, Hill and Robinson, especially how Williams and Hill have shown up. That’s 6. I think this is what I think.

        • Chiefs-Kings-A’s

          That’s probably pretty spot on.

    • Chiefs-Kings-A’s

Is Ehinger going to crack the starting lineup?

      • Laurels and limitations

looks like the job is his to lose.

  • berttheclock

There is a very interesting comment from Childress concerning his young receivers. Joel T of AP posted a thread about Childress moving both Reek and Robinson to various slots trying to teach them the different positions. But, the comment from Childress said the Chiefs do not want line runners as wide outs. He wants them to learn enough so, they can make the needed changes down field.

QBs are being told to be aggressive, I’m sure. This time of the year is about getting everyone involved.

        • ladner morse

Yes… and they were practicing the “over-the-shoulder” lob pass catching techniques yesterday… So I fairly certain Childress is planning on s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g the field this year.

That was one of the major flaws with Jon Baldwin. Funny thing is he grew up in a very tough neighborhood in Pennsylvania, yet, did not like to hand fight. When, he did try to actually throw a punch against Jones, he had his hand open.

  • Laurels and limitations

Bert, you still here? What’s the word on Kashif Moore?

    • berttheclock

Word? His lack of size has kept him back after leaving college. Tried to make it with several different teams, but, his five nine size hurt his chances. He has a great ability to get open on short passes, but, on longer ones, he has had problems turning his head around fast enough. But, to his credit, he keeps himself in top shape and keeps plugging away.

      • ladner morse

Don’t know if you got a chance t look through the vids I posted from yesterday… but Moore had a drop in Kick catching drill and he gave out a loud audible grown not heard on the tape when he did it.

Well, Zombo does have the most experience after the starters, right?

          • Laurels and limitations

          • Laurels and limitations

      • Laurels and limitations

just noticed that Morse was actually speaking there and not Schwartz. If PE is able to lock down the left side (legitimately) and LDT can do so on the right in similar fashion this early on in the year it is HUGE!! It’s early yet but I was hoping for just average across the o-line, anything else is just icing on the top.

      • dominicscarlatti

I think everyone will be focused on the play of the two young guards. Can LDT stay on his feet, not lunging and not being pancaked?

  • Laurels and limitations

I hate to see anyone injured, so I take no satisfaction in this, but it is relevant to our team

More from Morse on Ehinger: "He's an incredible football player, and to come in like that day one of pads and start, it really means a lot."— Matt Derrick (@mattderrick) August 1, 2016

    • Want to hear more on this. This was the player I was looking for in his selection!

      • ladner morse

Number 78 Parker Ehinger played LT at Cincinnati. Here’s some tape on him vs. BYU. You see see here why he’d make an excellent OG.

        • I like what I have seen. If he is up against a big opponent with a hard swim move,he will have to learn to handle that. Straight up, looks
to block well for the run and he handled the DE in the film you highlight. Next to Fish and Morse, i think we are going to have another quick study and success….d

  • ladner morse

If Schwartz, LDT, Morse, Ehinger, & Fisher jell this year and are good together… just impinge the years to come that the line will be solid. From Right to left the year of experience they are beginning with in 2016 would be… 5,3,2,0,4.

    • dominicscarlatti

Not to mention that for the very first time in the Dorsey/Reid era, we will have a solid, stable OL to grow together as a unit. I’ve been waiting a very long time for that, going back to the early days of the Pioli era.

      • ladner morse

Yes.. .some of us have talked about creating a Juggernaut OL… so it would be awesome to get that going on a consistent year to year basis!

  • Laurels and limitations

Check out White, perfect position. I wish he could have got his head turned around, but still

Here's a good look at that pass breakup from rookie CB D.J. White. Was a good throw from Murray….better coverage. pic.twitter.com/EpUcPV93za— BJ Kissel (@ChiefsReporter) August 1, 2016

      Cool… but… Kasha Moore… is really less.

      • Laurels and limitations

yeah, he’s looking a lot like a first round cut.

        • ladner morse

          Sadly yes.

          • Laurels and limitations

kinda fitting seeing as how he has Baldwin’s old number. Poor guy was set the hell up I tell ya’.

          • ladner morse

You think Baldwin was “set up” to fail?

          • Laurels and limitations

nope, Moore….he’s jinxed by the stink of Baldwin….it might take years for the stench of JB’s play to wash off that number.

          • ladner morse

            ahhh… ti takes me awhile… I see…….
But Baldwin was such a perfect draft pick for the Chiefs. WTF happened after that I have no clue!

Wilson does that every single day on Twitter. It makes him very likeable in my book, and even though it should have zero bearing, it does make me root for him more.
