Taking K.C. Chiefs Rookie Camp To School

On Monday, all the rookies, quarterbacks and first year players arrived for Rookie Camp which officially began on Monday but kicked into gear yesterday. So, camp is in session and it’s time we take the Chiefs to school…

Kindergarten is all about sharing…

We have already learned that backup quarterbacks Tyler Bray and rookie QBOTF Patrick Mahomes II will be sharing the backup role for now. In other words… they will be competing to see who holds down that spot during the season. This is the first step to the transition of having PM2 take over at QB, which many expect him to do by September of 2018. It’s funny how much people have just thrown Tyler Bray out with yesteryear’s fashions. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bray knock some people’s socks off. If that happens, I expect Bray to become trade fodder because I think PM2 has the inside track to start for the Chiefs next year and barring an earthquake at Arrowhead, he should be the opening day QB next year (or the next).

It was reported that Patrick Mahomes II made a good deal of progress from OTA’s to Rookie Camp. Building each day on the progress he’s already made is a big positive. It was also revealed that PM2 had his first taste of KC Barbecue and the place was… Jack Stacks… where he took his mother (good son).

First Day of school jitters…

It’s always good to hear when a player settles right in and starts looking good from the get-go. Especially a rookie. Hunt says he knows about and respects the Chiefs history of great RBs in Larry Johnson, Jamaal Charles and Priest Holmes. While I’m not predicting Hunt to be a breakout performer… I’d sure love it if he proved me wrong. Here’s my favorite Hunt quote on the first day of camp,

“I feel like I have been doing a great job taking it play-by-play and trying to catch every pass that comes my way. Honestly they use the running backs a lot out the back field. Probably the most balls thrown to me at a camp, so I am just enjoying it.”

Second stands for… two additions (and a promotion)

The Chiefs made two additions to their staff by hiring Michael Davis as a personnel executive and David Hinson as an Area Scout. The Chiefs aslo promoted Mike Borgonzi to Director of Player Personnel, a position vacated by, new GM, Brett Veach.

Third degree is for behavior…

While Head Coach Andy Reid may not have given veteran OLB Tamba Hali the 3rd degree for his twitter behavior, he promised to talk with him when he arrives at camp, which will be this Thursday or Friday. What Reid did say about Tamba’s tweets was,

“… I don’t think it is a huge deal, I don’t want to turn it into anything big. I think Tamba is one of the most unique teammates I have ever had and I mean that in a good way. He is a guy that says what’s on his mind. He is honest. He is sincere…. This locker room is as drama free as they come, so I don’t think it will be an issue.”

My personal take on what I believe Reid will remind Hali about is… consequences. Not he kind that Reid will exact upon him… but the kind of consequences that come from what other people will think of him and how what he says will naturally reflect upon the organization. I’ve had the same conversation with kids about how their behavior on field trips reflects upon the whole school, and not just them… and that if they have something urgent to say, I’m always there to listen to them and that I’ll take them seriously.

Go “Fourth” and multiply…

I pray that Justin March-Lillard can supply a wonderful life with a long and healthy NFL career.

Five… as in… number 56…

B.J. Kissel put it best, “He’s baaaaack!”

Derrick Johnson has long been one of my favorite players to watch every time the defense takes the field. As DJ goes… so goes the success of the defense.

The Sixth Sense…

Maybe there are some things better left unseen as QB Alex Smith explains somethings about training camp…

“I think there are special times that aren’t here on the practice field. I think obviously on the field the competition, the camaraderie, the smack talking—that stuff is a ton of fun. But come the afternoons there’s some great times, like I think all the guys in the big ol’ ice bath is hilarious, it’s a fun hang.”

“… all the guys in the big ol’ ice bath is hilarious, it’s a fun hang.” Wow… I’ll leave that one up to your imagination… unless you decide not to… I’ll completely understand.

Seven is for… Michael Vick’s old number is “7”

Michael Vick is acting as an intern coach for the Chiefs in training camp this year.

The opportunity to get Vick’s autograph this summer at training camp should be a big plus… for those who wish it. Doesn’t Vick look like a natural in a Chiefs cap? Maybe if too many QB’s go down during training camp Reid would consider………….

Eight, as in…

Number Eighty-seven (Mr. Travis Kelce) is coming into training camp a healthy man. That’s about as positive a news story as you’re going to find coming out of the first week of camp. The Chiefs are depending on TE Travis Kelce to continue tearing up the league… and not his knees.

Nine… as in el numero 95…

Chris Jones had a knee scoped on July 12th and will begin camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. I was actually shocked to find this out because his tweets have been the most exciting of all the Chiefs tweets for camp to begin…

I’m going to have to stop spending so much time on Twitter!

Nah!

Ten-forty good buddy…

Tamba Hali has “clarified” why he was tweeting so much over the weekend. HE WANTS TO WIN!

All Dat!

11… is 2 + 9 = 11 or… #29

Pro Football Focus has ranked the Kansas City Chiefs 2017 offensive backfield as the #29th best backfield in he NFL. Here’s what they had to say about the Chiefs three RBs,

“Despite the Chiefs drafting one of several PFF analysts favorite (including mine) running backs this year in Kareem Hunt, Kansas City finds themselves in the bottom four of this list because of what they return from 2016. Spencer Ware (77.2, 19th overall) played well, as his 49.8 elusive rating ranked 17th in the NFL, forcing 45 missed tackles on 257 touches. Charcandrick West (51.5, 51st) struggled to spell Ware with an elusive rating of 29.2, forcing just 15 missed tackles on 119 touches. Hunt was electric in his college career at Toledo as he posted the best running back grade in all of college football in 2016 and forced 76 missed tackles on 261 attempts in addition to 22 more on 66 receptions.”

(12) Twelve as in…
