The Lazy Big Board: Chiefs Targets on the OL

The Lazy Big Board:

Chiefs Targets on the OL

by Ransom Hawthorne | March 22, 2019

The Kansas City Chiefs under Brett Veach, have done an excellent job at building OL depth. Cameron Erving, Andrew Wylie, and Austin Reiter are all guys that Veach has acquired, and kept, at a reasonable cost. Some younger talent lurks in the wings as well, with guys like Ryan Hunter, and Jimmy Murray, sticking around. That said, the Chiefs could still look at some OL depth in the draft. The tackle depth in this draft, in particular, is pretty good. Here’s some of the guys they could target.

Pick 29 OT Andre Dillard, Washington State 65315 lbs: Excellent size and athleticism for the position. Quick feet ensure he’s always in position. Good 2nd level blocker, can do all the stuff that the Chiefs like, in terms of zone-blocking. Strength is just average. Can struggle against bigger rushers on the edge. I think Dillard can play a lot like Eric Fisher. You’d like to get an upgrade, but Fisher is a good player, and, if you can get Dillard, on a cheaper deal, for 4-5 years, that’s a good value. Fisher would be likely to bring in decent haul, in trade, as well. OTs with Dillard’s skill-set don’t generally fall this far, but as I said, the depth at OT, in this draft, is impressive. Top performer in the short shuttle, which is one of the most important tests for an OT.

Pick 61 or 63 OC Erik McCoy, Texas A&M 6′4” 303 lbs: Sturdy SEC lineman with plenty of experience, at Center. Athleticism to handle speed, and strength to handle big interior rushers. Solid showings against Alabama, and Clemson (two really good DLs). Arms are a little short, but it doesn’t seem to hurt him too much. McCoy isn’t great blocking at the 2nd level, or pulling around the end, like Morse was, but he’s a very solid blocker, and won’t allow any pressure up the middle. Day one starter, who should have a quality career. (Note: RAS = Relative Athletic Score).

Pick 92 OC Elgton Jenkins, Mississippi State 64” 310 lbs: Technically sound SEC blocker. Plenty of experience at C. Can recognize stunts and twists, and make protection calls. Good athlete, and a fit for the ZBS. Lacks nastiness. Rarely loses, but doesn’t win decisively either. Will likely prove an excellent pass protector, and mediocre run-blocker. If Chiefs can light a fire under him, he could turn out to be a pro-bowl caliber center. If not, at least he’ll keep Mahomes clean. When it comes to OL I’ll take uninspired, but consistent, success, over exciting flashes of dominance.

Pick 167 OG Dru Samia, Oklahoma 65 305 lbs: Started his career at RT, before he was kicked inside to guard. Feet aren’t quick enough to play tackle, and he’s a little light for guard. That said, he’s a good athlete, who blocks well in space. Great fit for Chiefs ZBS. He’ll need some time, in the NFL, to get his strength up, and his anchor where it needs to be, but he’s a good depth option, who should contend for a starting role, in a year or two. [Editor’s Note: I hope Ransom doesn’t mind that I added this little video but, it is such a pleasure and displays Dru Samia’s aggression so well. Had me gut laughing. -Laddie

Pick 201 OL Oli Udoh, Elon 6’5” 323 lbs: Absolutely massive RT. Played at a small school, so he’s more traits than player, right now, but the foundation is there. Not sure he has the feet to stay outside, but his size and strength are intriguing at RG or RT. Will definitely start his career as a backup player, and might take 2-3 years to contend for a starting gig. Boom or bust developmental prospect, who’s worth taking a shot on late.

Pick 214 or 216 OG Terronne Prescod, NC State 6’5” 331 lbs: Tank of a guard, with strong hands. When he lands his punch, it’s over. Solid pass blocker, and handled bull rushers well. Doesn’t have the quickest feet. Played in a ZBS, but looked lost at the 2nd level, or pulling. Looks a little chunky. If Chiefs can get him to drop some weight, improve his feet, and his technique, at the 2nd level, he’s a good candidate for the LG spot. If not, he’s at least a depth option that you feel pretty ok about, in pass pro.

Chiefs have a number of needs to fill, so I won’t be disappointed if they don’t dip into the OL pool. There is value to be had there though, and if Chiefs can secure a mid to late round starter, it could turn some of their existing assets into trade commodities. Chiefs CB situation is bad, but imagine how much worse it would be had they not traded Parker Ehinger for Charvarius Ward. If things fall right, Chiefs could pull off a similar move, this year.

Honorable Mentions

OT Bobby Evans: I really like Evans, but most boards rate him as a 4th round pick, and Chiefs don’t have one. I’d consider spending a 3rd on him, but I think Jenkins is the better player, at a position of greater need.

OT Dalton Risner: Risner is an excellent OL. Andre Dillard edged him out by a little bit, but not a lot. I’d be perfectly happy with Risner, in the same spot.

OG Chris Lindstrom: Lindstrom is a fantastic guard, but I couldn’t see Chiefs spending a first round pick, at the position, and he’ll be gone by the time they pick in the 2nd round.

OC Garrett Bradbury: I LOVE Bradbury, but he might go in the first round, before Chiefs pick. Even if he doesn’t I don’t think spending a 1st round pick on a center is good value, unless you desperately need a starter there. Chiefs will be ok with Reiter there, if need be.
