“With the 86th pick in the 2017 draft the Kansas City Chiefs select….. ….. …..”
I sat in my living room, hanging on these words as they seem to be dragged out of Will Sheilds. I was thinking to myself, “Why do they always drag out every single second that they can before saying the pick’s name?”
They should just say it as a statement like, “Number 9 Cincinnati Bengals John Ross.” Why do they always have to insert a pause? It’s like they say to themselves “Hey the draft is a boring process. Let’s punch it up a bit with some drama!”
After an agonizing second, I laid my sandwich down and I had missed what was said. Crap! I need to pay more attention. Luckily I have DVR so a quick rewind and I would be up to speed.
“With the 86th pick in the 2017 draft the Kansas City Chiefs select….. ….. …..” What a stupid, stupid pause, why can’t they just get on with it!? Then the said it………. “Kareem Hunt. Running back, Toledo.”
Right when I heard these words, the first thing I did was Google who the heck Kareem Hunt is and why should I be excited for him being picked. I mean there were plenty of names I knew off the top of my head that if I were running the show would be picked.
After a quick Google and I found him, Kareem Hunt only started 3 games as a freshman. So I’m thinking to myself, okay, not great but, okay… we could do worse. Then I look deeper. He only started in 3 games but he played in 12 games while amassing 866 yards on 137 carries and 6 touchdowns. 137 carries and he managed 866 yards?
I took out my handy dandy calculator I found that he averaged 6.32 yards-per-carry. Let that soak in a bit, 6.32. Ahh, that number makes me begin to smile. Now, I’m hooked and I must know more. I mean he was only a freshman so it could be a fluke.
His sophomore campaign was just as eye-popping. 205 carries and 1631 yards with 16 touchdowns… and… 7.95 YARDS-PER-CARRY! This is astounding.
The more I read the more excited I become. The stupid draft is going on in the background distracting me from my mission at this point. “With the 87th pick of the 2017 draft the New York Giants pick…. ….. …..”
QUIT PAUSING BEFORE SAYING WHO THE PICK IS! STOP IT! BAD ANNOUNCER! BAD BAD BAD!
Sorry, I may be losing it. I just do not know why that is bothering me so much. It’s a band-aid, just rip it off and be done with it.
Back to Kareem… I swear no more distractions. So apparently, Hunt was in the GoDaddy Bowl in 2015 and was named MVP? Why haven’t I heard of this guy before now? Who was hiding his spectacular play from me? Do you know what it takes to be named MVP of a Bowl game? Apparently, all it required was for him to put on a clinic, rushing the ball for 271 yards and 5 touchdowns.
I’m thinking to myself, “Now I could do that, I mean not now, maybe a few years ago, with a lot of training, and if all the defenders were injured, and if they weren’t allowed to tackle me, or touch me in any way. I could definitely become an MVP.”
He tied a NCAA record with this performance. Who did he tie you ask? Oh some nobody named Barry Sanders. BARRY ‘FREAKING’ SANDERS!
This kid just keeps getting better and better! I have to keep looking. Real quick, I’ve been good today so I’ll take a little snack break before I continue the search. Oreo’s and milk are looking good, so I sit back down and keep reading. One glass of milk and more cookies than I would like to admit. I find the first negative on Mr. Kareem. He was suspended for the first two games of his junior year for a violation of team rules.
Now, this could be because of anything. Maybe he broke curfew, missed a practice, or violated a certain double secret probation. Could be anything right? Obviously, it isn’t too serious, the cops weren’t called. We all know it isn’t a real party unless the cops show up. So, I have no issue overlooking this hiccup in his otherwise blemish free collegiate career. He did come back in the third game of the season but was unfortunately injured and missed the following two games.
So… so far… I see that he is a rushing machine who does not fumble… E-V-E-R… and is very reliable and relatively injury free. The more I’m reading, the more I wonder to myself why wasn’t he chosen higher? Is it because of Toledo? I mean when I think of NFL talent coming from college I don’t really jump up and scream, “HEY LET’S LOOK AT TOLEDO!.” That must be it. Not a lot of talent coming into the bigs from there… may be overlooked.
So now, I need to know. What did 2016 have in store for our new rusher?
Let me tell you I was not let down. In 13 games, Mr. Kareem Hunt, ran it 262 times and churned out 1,475 yards. His average YPC was a bit lower than before at 5.63, but that is still a great stat to have in your pocket.
With those touches, he punched the ball in 10 times. He even expanded his game and caught one receiving touchdown.
At this point, I’m jazzed. I have been squawking and moaning about getting someone in to replace Charles because I don’t think West and Ware are cutting it.
With Hunt, we have that someone. He has only committed one… count em’… “1 fumble in 782 touches.” That’s like 1 in 782. (I know, I know, I should be a statistician. With my killer skills, I would make millions! MILLIONS!!!)
So, I am on my couch looking up every scrap of a video I can find with Hunt in it… the draft is going on in the background… my wife is wanting me to take out the trash.
This must be what happiness feels like.
I am extremely pleased with our selection.
We finally have the heir to carry on the mantle of a Kansas City Chief running back.
All is right with the world. Then I hear,
“With the 88th pick of the 2017 draft the Oakland Raiders pick…. ….. …..”
AGAIN WITH THE PAUSE!!!!
Wait a second, I know I laid a sandwich somewhere…
