Last night following the first day of the draft, Brett Veach addressed the media. When he was asked about trading up into the first round he said,“If you were to ask me what the odds were of me getting into round one, I would’ve said very low.” So much for the drama. However, he also said, “We made calls.” Plus, he indicated, “We (he and his staff) had dialog from 27 to 31.” I guess they weren’t napping after all.
So, could the Chiefs still be players in a possible trade from picks 33 to 50? It sounds like it. In fact, BJ Kissel has pointed out that the Marcus Peters trade produced an extra 2nd round selection in 2019 which of course could be used this year along with perhaps one of the third round picks to move up and get a prospect that Veach might covet. If the team the Chiefs were possibly trading with valued their 2019 pick at 400 points which is the middle of the 2nd round (a # taken from the DrafTek NFL value Trade Chart) and add it to the 160 which is what their pick #86 is worth, it could vault them up to pick #34 which is worth 560 points.
Will it happen? Who knows. I’m certain that Brett Veach doesn’t even know for sure but, there were times during his interview that he would smile just a little too much.
What is clear is that today is the day that Chiefs fans everywhere will get to hear the names of the new players who will be invited to become a part of the organization. It was encouraging to hear Mr. Veach say that the guys he selects in the first 2, 3, or 4 rounds are guys he expects to come in and compete for a starting job or contribute right away. Those words would be especially astute should Veach end up navigating a defense heavy outcome at the top of this draft.
There are essentially 21 picks now until the Chiefs pick at #54 and Brett Veach has stated, “We already have a strong indication about how the first 10 to 12 picks will play out.” He said he and his group will talk on Thursday evening until they get consensus, if it takes 20 minutes, or if it takes three hours.
