The NFL Pro Bowl. The most meaningless football game of the year and it involves some of the highest paid professional athletes. An “All-Star” for pro football players has to be a dangerous affair, right? So, why does this game even exist? Oh wait… now I know why the players have turned this game in a Globetrotters showcase of skills with next to no tackling with plenty of gaffs and gaffahs among foes.
Certainly, for the players who are named to the Pro Bowl, this game has meaning… in that they made the Pro Bowl. Other than that, there’s no reason to risk injury and the game has obviously become a clown show, for the most part. Plus, the players who are playing in the game who had made the playoffs but had an early exit… would rather be playing in another game with the most recent loss still stinging.
So, how did we get here? Form an article written for the AthleticBusiness.com by Andrew Cohen called, “The Pro Bowl is Stupid, Kill It” he says,
“All-Star Games have all outlived their relevance, but the Pro Bowl… is by far the dumbest of them all, and made even dumber by its being contested today, one week before the Super Bowl.
If that’s possible. It’s true that, in its normal slot one week after the Super Bowl, it was a colossal afterthought – and worse, a game that nobody really wanted to play, with the specter of injury leading to many no-shows, both literal and figurative. This year, the game is being played without representatives of the league’s two best teams, including the two best quarterbacks. Why bother?”
When I was a a kid, I wouldn’t miss this game. I could finally see my favorite players in a big game… because the reality is, only a limited number of my favorite players were going to reach the Super Bowl each year. In any event, the Pro Bowl is going to be played anyway. So, if you’re inclined, blog your thoughts here. It’s either this or college football.
