2019 NFL Draft: OPEN THREAD

by Laddie Morse | April 25, 2019

The time has finally come. The 2019 NFL Draft is here and although it’s a bit anti-climatic for Kansas City Chiefs fans, the outcome of this 3 day event should not be minimized when it comes to furnishing the team with the necessary players that will help these Chiefs get over the hump and all the way to a Super Bowl. Speaking of the Super Bowl, I heard that after the Frank Clark trade was finalized, the Chiefs rose to the top of the league in terms of odds of winning the Super Bowl:

The change rate for the Chiefs roster looks like it’s still in high gear with this draft class coming in. I see no reason why all of last year’s draft class won’t make the roster and so the same can be assumed of the six more players the Chiefs will be picking this weekend. When you consider all the moves the Chiefs have made in the past 16 months (since the 2017 season ended) the following list is mind bending:

  1.  Tamba Hali, gone.
  2.  Derrick Johnson, gone.
  3.  Eric Berry, gone.
  4.  Justin Houston, gone.
  5.  Dee Ford, gone.
  6.  Marcus Peters, gone.
  7.  Steven Nelson, gone.
  8.  Eric Murray, gone.
  9.  Allen Bailey, gone.
  10.  Rakeem Nunez-Roches, gone.
  11.  Ramik Wilson, gone.
  12.  Ukeme Eligwe, gone.
  13.  Ron Parker, gone.
  14.  Frank Zombo, gone.
  15.  Kevin Pierre-Louis, gone.
  16.  Terrance Mitchell, gone.
  17.  Kenneth Acker, gone.
  18.  Orlando Scandrick, gone.
  19.  Darrelle Revis, gone.
  20.  David Amerson, gone.

||||| = Drafted by the Chiefs

There are plenty of other players who have exited One Arrowhead Way in the past year… and two offseasons… but these 20 represent a rather dramatic turnover on the Defensive side of the ball alone. The top 6 players on this list made their fair share of Pro Bowls so it’s not like it has been easy watching them part.

If anyone is mistaken about whether or not the Chiefs have a re-building project going on, doubt no more. It’s almost a complete overhaul. Now, I’m just hoping they can shore up the defense enough in this draft that we aren’t waiting it out another year until the Free Agency period of 2020 and the draft next year to make it come together.

A Bit of Draft History

The first AFL Draft took place in 1959 and lasted… wait for it… 53 rounds. They had their first draft in November with 33 rounds then in December added 20 more rounds. The first NFL draft took place in 1936 and lasted 9 rounds for 9 teams… which has me a bit confused because a team needs more than 9 players, right. Even if they had players who went both ways, a common practice in those days, it still wouldn’t give them enough to field a team (perhaps one of our bloggers who were fans back then can weigh in… hehe). The Chiefs drafted both Chris Buford and Johnny Robinson in their first draft and the very first player to ever be taken in the NFL was a Heisman winner in 1935, Jay Berwanger:

Five Facts, One Fiction

By now many of you have heard the story about HoFer Herb Adderley who won 5 titles with Green Bay and Dallas is also… Nasir Adderley’s 1st cousin, twice-removed. That’s a true story but, can you spot Fiction from Fact. Here are 5 Facts, one Fiction. Can you spot the Fake news?

  1.  Washington CB Byron Murphy was a standout high school basketball player, and his uncle is Mike Bibby, a former NBA point guard and UCLA star.
  2.  Parris Campbell’ ran a 4.31 40-yard dash but did you know he was also Ohio’s high school state indoor track 60-yard-dash record-holder at 6.85.
  3.  A two-time state champion wrestler, Temple cornerback Rock Ya-Sin got his nickname from his wrestling coach. His real first name is Abdurrahman.
  4.  Miles Sanders is the 14th player from Woodland Hills High (Pittsburgh) to go to the NFL. Michael Strahan & Rob Gronkowski also played there.
  5.  Ole Miss WR A.J. Brown is not the only NFL Draft Prospect to be drafted into MLB. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2016 MLB draft.
  6.  Greg Dortch missed the end of 2017 from a punctured intestine diving on a pylon. Before going to have surgery, he scored 2 more TDs in the game.

Here’s the key:

  • 1.  Murphy did play basketball and his uncle is Mike Bibby.
  • 2.  Yep, Parris Campbell is the record holder.
  • 3.  The Rock is not the only Rock. A real Wrestler (coach) gave Ya-Sin his nick-name.
  • 4.  14 NFL players have gone to Woodland Hills High, but not Michael Strahan.
  • 5.  With talk of Kyler Murray switching sports, they should be asking A.J. Brown too.
  • 6.  I’m a big Greg Dortch fan, this story supports my belief in him even more.

FYI, the Chiefs divisional foes select as follows, in the first round:

  • Raiders: #4, #24, and #27,
  • Broncos #10,
  • Chargers #28.

Here’s the complete Round One Draft Order tonight:

That’s the draft order… FOR NOW… unless of course there is a trade sometime today prior to the beginning of the draft. In 2018, there were 18 teams involved in 1st round trades. What would you say is the over/under on the number of 1st round trades this year? We’re already up to 5 trades involving 10 teams.

Here’s the link to Ransom Hawthorne’s Lazy Big Board Conclusion with links to 60 draft prospects he’s evaluated this spring. Also, here’s the link to David Perkins NFL Draft Resource Guide with an Overall Average for each prospect in the draft from at least 3 different ranking services..

Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the ride. Hey, what’s on the menu tonight as we take in the NFL’s feature offseason event… and to some, it’s feature event?
