Now, it’s all a matter of who goes where, and we finally get what seems like century long questions answered. For Kansas City Chiefs fans, this day has become emphatically anti-climactic. Not just because the Baltimore Ravens whiffed and gifted our Chiefs with a young, skilled and accomplished true Left Tackle last Friday, but when you already have the Muhammad Ali of quarterbacks in the league on your team, you have to listen to 31 other teams drone on and ramble as they scramble to find the next best option to Patrick Mahomes.

In the meantime, there are 21 other positions on the field, but the way the NFL has come to value and order those positions goes a long way towards deciding who will be drafted on day one, and who will not. That’s also the logic as to why there are so many trades. Many General Managers across the league get so grabby that they feel the need to trade for trades sake, while others stand pat… or take advantage of those other GMs. Let’s take a look at how many trades we might expect, just in the first round, based on the trend of the past five years.
.
- The first round of the 2021 NFL Draft has already had trades involving 14 teams (as of 2:00 PM today).
- In the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, there were trades involving 24 teams.
- In the first round of the 2019 NFL draft, there were trades involving 26 teams.
- In the first round of the 2018 NFL draft, there were trades involving 36 teams.
- In the first round of the 2017 NFL draft, there were trades involving 26 teams.
- In the first round of the 2016 NFL draft, there were trades involving 27 teams.
.
It’s been reported that fewer trades are expected this year, but even if there are fewer trades (I expect more), there should still be Good-&-Plenty left to happen today/tonight, and some may have an effect on the second round. Since K.C. has two second rounders, it’s worth paying attention to, because it could have an impact on who is taken before the Chiefs pick at #58 and again at #63 tomorrow evening.
.
Watching, hearing, or spending any time in consideration of this year’s first round mocks has been useless this week… until now. Here’s one last fun mock to put this draft season in perspective……..

Go Chiefs… and Brett Veach! Come to think of it, shouldn’t this officially be called, “Brett Veach Day”… at least in Kansas City. Hey kids, no school, it’s “Brett Veach Day” … sounds right to me.
