This evening we have the Kansas City Chiefs traveling to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals in Preseason Game II. There are two different parts of the game to focus on tonight. First, it’s the starters playing in the first half and second, it’s the second and third team performers coming on in the second half of the game. Let’s talk about each.
Where to keep your eyes fixed in the first half
Three positions I’ll be fixing my eyes on: 1) the left guard, 2) the running back, and 3) the second wide receiver.
1. The Left Guard
If Bryan Witzman is starting again at left guard I want to see if he can keep his pads lower. He had a couple of good plays on the Chiefs first drive one week ago against the 49ers but not so good the rest of the drive. That’s probably why we saw Zach Fulton swinging between many different positions with the first team this week and I won’t be surprised at all to see Fulton get the start here at LG.
2. The Running Back
While Spencer Ware is at the top of the depth chart and third round pick Kareem Hunt only got one carry last week, it’s still likely that Hunt gets some first team looks because he’s done so well in training camp. If Hunt does get some carries… which there’s a very good chance of since the first team is scheduled to play the whole first half… then RB will be another place I will keep my eyes fixed.
3. Wide Receiver Number Two
Many fans — with me, myself, and I at the forefront… have been expecting Chris Conley to breakout any second now. Last week’s first play pass from Tyler Bray for an 83 yards TD (before it was called back on a bogus call for hand-fighting on Conley)… was a good sign that Chris is ready to break out in a big way. With #1WR Tyreek Hill getting so much attention and having a whole half of football to display his (Conley’s) talents, I am not only hoping, but expecting, Conley to explode.
Where to keep your eyes fixed in the second half
1. As I mentioned in my piece called, “Chiefs: Finding Tanoh” there’s a bit of a battle going on to see whether or not the coaches will keep an extra outside linebacker or an extra defensive lineman and more specifically how Tanoh Kpassagnon is used (with the first or second team: DL or OLB). Consequently, that’s the first place I’ll be keeping my eyes fixed to see how those individuals perform.
2. The right cornerback position has been up for grabs ever since Sean “Assault & Battery” Smith was in town. Yes, it’s a good idea to see who starts there in the first half, but I’ll be keeping my eyes fixed on the R-CB position in the second half to see who’s up to the challenge.
3. With the Chiefs drafting a CB who was converted to Safety in each of the last two seasons (Eric Murray and Leon McQuay) it will be a battle to see who steps up and makes solid plays when the second team is on the field. There are currently 18 DBs on the Chiefs roster and only half of those will make the final 53. So, a lot of someones are going to get cut but only one or two will get stashed on the Practice Squad.
