With the Kansas City Chiefs securing Sammie Watkins at WR, they could consider themselves set at the position. That would be a mistake. While Watkins and Hill are extremely talented, Chris Conley is coming off a severe injury, Robinson has yet to produce, and the rest of their WRs have barely played. If K.C. plans on building a juggernaut offense, they need to have the depth to support it. While WR may not be a priority, early, the Chiefs need to find somebody in the draft who can, at least, develop into a starter.
Pick #54 — DJ Moore — 6’ 210, USF
Dynamic athlete who is only scratching the surface of his potential. Hasn’t really played with great QBs, but has consistently averaged 13+ YPR. Moore’s route running needs some work, because he hasn’t been asked to do a lot, in college, but his combination of blazing speed, dynamic athleticism and toughness, after the catch, point to a great future as a slot or outside WR. Moore can start out in the slot and be a dangerous weapon on slants, comeback and go routes.

Pick #78 — DJ Chark — 6′3” 199lbs, LSU
With blazing speed, a big verticle and long arms, Chark looks the part of a great WR, but he hasn’r really produced on the field the way you’d expect. Some of this is due to mediocre QB play, some of it is poor route running. Chark may struggle with press coverage early, but once he figures it out, he’s got cushion eating speed and great potential as a deep threat. Comparisons to Chris Conely are justified, and he may take a similar amount of time to produce.

Pick #86 WR — Deontay Burnett — 6′ 186lbs, USC
Zone eater who runs quick routes and finds his way open. Very good on scramble drills. Tough to cover for very long. Pretty good hands. Undersized and doesn’t have room to get much bigger. Lack of physicality makes him lose out on most contested balls. Slot only type player whose lack of physicality will have a lot of teams checking out, but he’s a good fit for the chiefs as a slot receiver who can take advantage of space created by Hill and Watkins. Ability to run decent routes means he might play sooner than some of the guys that Chiefs have drafted at the position.
Pick #122 WR — Dante Pettis — 6‘1” 192lbs
Washington Huskies
Average sized WR, with average athletic traits, but runs great routes. Has been successful as a PR despite lacking special speed. Works his way open and shows decent hands. Pettis could work his way into a full time starter in the slot, but will probably start his career as a quality 4th WR.
Pick #124 WR — Jordan Lasley — 6′1” 210lbs, UCLA
Super explosive and fluid. Tough cover. Deep threat. Major character concerns, butter fingers. Doesn’t maintian focus. If you can rebuild his mind, his body has tremendous value. It might not be worth the risk, but he’s the most talented player available here.

Pick #196 WR — Jeff Badet — 5′11” 182lbs
Kentucky & Oklahoma
Not much of a route runner at this point, but Badet has special speed, running a 4.27 40 at his pro day. Even though you have to take pro-day numbers with a grain of salt, that’s still pretty impressive. Badet could be the another DAT, but his top shelf speed makes him well worth a look here and I think he’ll have a better career than Thomas has.
Pick #233 WR — Dylan Cantrell — 6′3” 226lbs
Texas Tech
Speed is below average for the position, but he’s a fluid athlete. Really good hands and plays smart. Not a flashy player by any means, but can be a possession WR and a STs player. Played with Mahomes in college so they have at least some experience together. Combine numbers were more impressive than expected.

Pick #243 WR — Marquez Valdez-Scantling — 6’4” 206lbs
N.C. St. & S. Florida
Blazing fast, tall WR with big hands. Very raw as a player. Needs to basically be taught route running from scratch. Hands are just ok. He’s a little light for his size. Scantlings issues are experience related. If Chiefs can coach him up, he’ll be a great deep threat, but they might have to hang onto him as a STs only player for a couple years before they see it.

Chiefs top of their depth chart is fine, but they need young WRs to fill out the bottom. DJ Moore is a stud and will be a great WR, but Chiefs may need to wait till later and grab a value guy like Cantrell. Whatever happens, I’ll be excited to see what Mahomes can bring to a Chiefs offense that dealt with a lot of stacked boxes, last year. Go Chiefs.
