With the draft swiftly approaching, here’s my final ranking of all the Kansas City Chiefs prospects on the Lazy Big Board. While this draft has drawn comparisons to the 2013 class, the QB depth should push a few decent options down the board. GM Brett Veach could be aggressive, leading to less available picks, but, if he does, he needs to make sure he comes away with a safety, pass rusher and depth CB. Finding a replacement for departed Offensive Lineman Zach Fulton should be a high priority as well.
The Chiefs have made a number of moves in Free Agency that could influence their drafting, but always keep in mind longevity of contract. While Chiefs have brought in two new CBs, they’ve lost a couple and stand to lose a couple more next year. Acquiring at least one, and probably two, should be a major priority. K.C. has made enough moves to ignore some positions, like WR, TE and OL, but that should not preclude them from spending picks there if the right players are available. As Paul Pulley pointed out, Nose Tackle is not as big of a need as we think, but the DL is in need of an overhaul, regardless. Team needs are unlikely to be totally resolved, through the draft, but they can take a big step forward, if they stick to their board and don’t reach for need.
Bonus Thought: Some of you may have noticed that I didn’t write a STs portion of the Lazy Big Board this year. That was deliberate. K.C. is set at kicker, punter, and long-snapper. They have adequate options at PR and KR. While special teams ability is always a consideration for late round picks, Veach doesn’t need to target any special-teams-only type players. They should focus on guys who have a chance to be starters.
