Chiefs Who Got Some Pop!

by Laddie Morse

It’s a new year and a new batch of Kansas City Chiefs. There are some Chiefs who got some pop! Some real quickness, ability to hit and they just stand out every time they take the field. So, let’s take a look.

Blake Mack is Poppin’

TE/WR Blake Mack has been getting some attention lately and rightfully so. He’s quick off the line of scrimmage and uses his superior strength to get free when DBs jam him early:

At 6-foot 3, 229, Mack is a bit of a tweener… not big enough to be a Tight End and too big to be a Wide Receiver. However, that may not be the case with the Chiefs. Andy Reid likes to use his TEs in 3-tight end sets and so Mack could work out there… and Mack is quick enough to run all the routes a wide receiver must run in Reid’s offense including slot routes.

There, Mack owns Daniel Sorensen who stands 6-foot-2 and 208 but Sorensen ends up on the ground and Mack gets free and clear of the coverage for an easy reception. Here’s one more of Blake Mack. You can see how agressive he is. The guy’s got some pop!

Tremon Smith is Poppin’

CB Tremon is the biggest surprise of the Chiefs draft picks this year. A 6th round pick, and the 196th pick in the draft, Tremon came to the Chiefs with few expectations, at least by Chiefs fans.

At 6-foot-0 and 190, Smith is not the biggest CB but his size may be ideal. His speed is notable and as a 4.3 – 40 guy probably the second fastest on the team. The fastest man on the team is known as Cheetah… so you could say, Tremon Smith is an animal too…

“It’s not the reputation that makes the player… it’s the plays they make” ~Laddie Morse (yes, you can quote me on that one)… and Tremon Smith is proving he can make plays with the best of them… and against the best:

Steven Nelson is Poppin’

It’s clear that Steven Nelson has developed since last season. Sometimes when your peers leave your organization, you take advantage and step up. That’s apparently what Nelson has done and there’s no “Half-Nelson” about it. Nelson made that clear from Day 1 of Training Camp:

That’s not the only time Nelson has had an INT during this Training Camp either:

Sure, Steven Nelson has been beat by some of the Chiefs wideouts, but you could also argue that this is the best group of wide receivers that the Chiefs have ever had. While the wide receivers are deeper than ever, it bodes well for Nelson who has played each WR very close and forces them to “make a play” just to get a reception. Here, you can see that Nelson is so “in-the-grill” of the WR, he causes the incompletion.

Over valued or not, there are those who believe that Steven Nelson’s contribution to the defense will be critical this year.

Anthony Hitchens is Poppin’

ILB Anthony Hitchens has been a steady contributor since the beginning of OTAs and now is shining in Training Camp. The main measure of an ILBs value is his ability to diagnose and hit. Here, those skills come into focus.

Hitchens is the embodiment of Brett Veach’s new mantra: “i want guys who are tough.”

I’d say Anthony Hitchens is Poppin’ Fresh… but that’s another article altogether.

Sammy Watkins is Poppin’

WR Sammy Watkins may the poppin’-ist of them all. In fact, I think some of us have gotten so used to his dailey superb one-handed grabs that we may be taking him for granted.

I like how every time Watkins catches the ball, he is also ready to make a move to get more yards out of the play. I noticed that on one of his first receptions in Training Camp and he does it here again on Day 8. Kendall Fuller has already proven he is the Chiefs best CB and still, Watkins beats him…

… and he does so regularly:

What do you think Chiefs fans? Is there anyone you’d like to add to the list of Chiefs who are “Poppin'” this year?
