Krunk on Chiefs Whoo-Hoo!

Krunk on Chiefs Whoo-Hoo!

by Laddie Morse | January 15, 2019

A year and a half ago I moved back to Kansas City after living in the Dallas area for 20 years which was preceded by living in the K.C. area for 21 years and I can tell you without question, living here and being able to see other Chiefs fans is crazy wonderful. I ran into a lady last week walking with a cane onto an elevator at the Truman Medical Center and she noticed my Chiefs T-shirt and her face lit up she asked me if I was excited about the Chiefs? I’ve seen Chiefs banners on buildings and Chiefs flags in yards, downtown buildings lit up in red as well as whole bridges decked in red. That’s only part of why I’m krunk on Chiefs Whoo-Hoo!

It was just two years ago that I made a pre-season visit to the Grapevine Mills Mall in Grapevine, Texas and walked to every sports clothing store there and not one of them had a Chiefs cap or Chiefs sweatshirt. I asked one of the managers why they didn’t have any Chiefs related wear and he laughed and said, “Who’d want it?” which was followed by laughter by a couple of other people standing there. My how times have changed.

While the Cowboys are going to be sitting at home this weekend you can be sure the stores in that Mall have made the necessary additions based on the demand.

There are a ton of a good reasons to be krunk — crazy drunk — about the 2018-19 Kansas City Chiefs.

I had that realization when I was re-watching the game against the Colts for the second time. That’s how good these Chiefs have become, it’s almost every other play that is so outstanding that it could be a highlight.

I heard on NFL Network that the Chiefs have averaged more rushing yards per game this year after Kareem Hunt left the team than when he was on the team. The “anticipated” RB weakness for the offense has turned out to be a strength by anyone’s standards. Can we get some love for Damien WIlliams in here? BTW… Damien Williams came to us from the Dolphins who used to play the Pats twice per year so, he has lots of first-hand knowledge of their defense.

Last weekend, on Friday night, I didn’t get much sleep in anticipation of the Chiefs contest with the Colts. I woke up to a beautiful blanket of snow covering the earth and as the day proceeded… the snow continued. As I only live five miles from Arrowhead, and I have DirecTV which was out because the dish on my roof was completely covered, I knew the storm would have an impact on the game but more than anything I was wondering what I’d have to do to get to see the Chiefs play this game, a game I’d waited years to see. I ended up driving 30 miles away to Blue Springs where my daughter lives, with five minutes to spare before kickoff. Lucky for me, my son-in-law figured out how to get channel 41 by hooking up an indoor antenna. Oh, the lengths we’ll go through to watch our Chiefs.

The first quarter of that game provided me with many moments of hooting and hollering which kind of freaked out my grandkids… at first… but long after, they got into the fun. My daughter never developed my love for football, which I “inherited’ from my father, but her son — my grandson — quickly began to take an interest and make comments on the game. Isn’t it wonderful, being able to close the generation gap while at the same time sharing a love for all things Chiefs?

Oh, and what a game to share! There may not have been a more complete game played by the Chiefs in years. I was ecstatic when Damien Williams scored the Chiefs first TD:

It’s really unfair to start talking about that game by mentioning the offense first because the defense was so incredible. Three straight 3-and-outs was just the beginning but those three defensive stands sealed the Colts fate early on and were a sign of greater things to come:

One of the biggest positives for the Chiefs game this coming weekend is that it will be played in Arrowhead. While the Chiefs offense has scored 32.2 PPG at home, the defense has only allowed 17.4 PPG at home. It may be cold, and an evening game this coming Sunday, but I’m sure Chiefs fans will be their loudest, for the visiting team.

While my interest is re-emerging in the Chiefs defense, I am crazy for Patrick Mahomes and this offense. I’m a huge Sammy Watkins fan and although he’s been out for part of the season he came back strong in this game with 6 catches for 62 yards. I about jumped out of my chair when Watkins caught the ball over the middle and did this little hesitation jump-step in the middle of his route after catching the ball. That was cray-cray. I’ll tell you what else was amazing… here’s the catch Sammy made that got me totally woke!

Incredible one-hand grab! Hey, you all should have known Sammy was going to play in that game. He published this little bit of wack-a-doodle himself last week:

Speaking of wide receivers, here’s a run by Tyreek Hill that has had me laughing-out-loud each time I watched it which was several times on Twitter and twice while rewatching the game on NFL Game Pass.

I encourage you to watch it a second time here only this time watch all the defenders around him and notice that they look like they’re in slow motion. Still it’s got me chuckling.

The Chiefs depth at running back has made me excited for the future of that position. The moment in this game that had me in tears (I know, I know… I’m a wuss), was when Darrel WIlliams scored giving the Chiefs a 31-13 lead with about 2 minutes and 30 seconds left in the game. That was the one that secured a win and I don’t know if you can hear it… but to me… I think you can hear a sense of relief in the crowd cheering as well. It was the most amazing moment. That’s when I was at my krunkiest for sure.

If you watch that piece again, about 25 seconds into the clip, a Chiefs fan pumps her fist 3 times yelling “YES, YES, YES!” capturing the soul of that moment for all of Chiefs Kingdom… as if to put a stamp on a victory that was truly a win for the ages.

On the morning of the Chiefs Divisional game with the Colts, I woke up to find this view of Arrowhead posted on Twitter:

That’s a gorgeous view of the snow coming down. Fortunately, the grounds crew got it all fixed up by game time. By evening time, all was well in the Kingdom and peace came over the valley.

The game this coming weekend will be colder than it would be if there was snow because of an arctic blast that’s headed our way. It could be as low as one degree by game’s end. However, that won’t stop me from being krunk on Chiefs Whoo-Hoo!
