Chiefs at Raiders: Last Stand at the Oakland Coliseum – The Kansas City Chiefs head to Oakland Coliseum for one last time this Sunday to face off against their division rivals, the Oakland Raiders. Both teams are coming off of wins, the Chiefs handily defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, 40-to-26, in Jacksonville, while Oakland did much the same the next night vs Denver, hanging a 24-16 loss on the hapless Denver Broncos.

Injury Reports

Kansas City Chiefs:  There are a few with bang-ups, such as Patrick Mahomes (ankle), or Tyrann Mathieu (shoulder). However, none of any consequence. Obviously with last week’s game (or MMA Match if you ask the Jag-Offs), Tyreek Hill is out with his shoulder ailment.

Oakland Raiders: The Raiders are a bit more banged up than are the Chiefs.  It is doubtful that Guard Gabe Jackson (knee) plays, or WR J.J. Nelson (ankle), or even safety Johnathan Abram (ankle).

Key Matchups

There is only one matchup in this contest that is key, that is the Chiefs defense against Raiders QB Derek Carr and his brood. Even without the distraction whose name I shall not mention, Carr did well. He mixed it up and made happen what needed to happen. Carr finished the day with a 121 passer rating. He completed 22 out of 26 throws for 259 yards, no interceptions and a touchdown. Shut him down this week.

What I Think I Think

I think that the Chiefs left no less than three touchdowns on the field against Jacksonville. From Mahomes ill-advised no-look pass to Kelce, to slacking off in the fourth quarter, we should have been in the fifties, if not sixties.

This is the most prolific offense in the NFL this season. Maybe all-time.  Let’s let the world and the NFL know this Sunday. The defense, from last year, has already improved. Ranked 31st in the NFL last year, the Chiefs are at #22 this week. There’s no reason we cannot be in the top 15 or 10 this week.

Frank Clark, Honey Badger, make it happen, please.

What I’d Like To See

On Defense

I realize that we played a rather vanilla defense against the Jaguars. We could probably do the same against the Raiders and win. Let’s not. Hit them hard and hit them often. Cement in the heads of our AFC West neighbors that we are still “large and in charge” and put the rest of the AFC on notice that the road to the Super Bowl comes through the Kansas City Chiefs.

Of the Rookies

Darwin Thompson was non-existent and a non-factor last week. He’s entirely too good for this. He needs to be in the thick of things. As does Mecole Hardman. He needs more opportunities. Let’s get our young studs out there and let them show that they are not only worthy of being in the NFL, but worthy of being Chiefs.

Juan Thornhill played every play last week. Moreover, he played well on every play.  I’m looking forward to seeing more of the Black-Kite.

Butt-Kicking!

Finally, I’d like to see a decisive Chief’s victory. Just a good old-fashioned butt-kicking. No matter how bad the Chiefs are doing during their season, a victory over either the Raiders or the Broncos makes my Mondays better. The grass is greener, the sky bluer, and the air fresher than ever. There’s just something about the Chiefs beating the Raiders that make me want to be… “a better man.“

A Chiefs victory over the Raiders on Sunday sends me to work on Monday morning with an extra pep in my step.

My Final Take

These two have never liked one another and always played each other tough, no matter the quality of their respective teams when they met. Sunday will be no exception. However, the Broncos team that the Raiders ran roughshod over on Monday night are but a shell of a once great organization. With a has-been quarterback in Joe Flacco, who was the poster child of mediocrity even in his prime years, and a wanna-be GM and President, John Elway, the Raiders victory rings hollow and impresses NOT.

The Raiders are the Raiders, saved only from the basement of the AFC West for the aforementioned reasons. The Chiefs win this game in a fantastically fabulous fashion. My prediction is generous, not higher, only because of my affinity to irony and serendipity (please read the Fun Fact).

Final Score Prediction: Chiefs 32, Broncos 10

Bonus Fun Fact: The first football game ever played at Oakland Coliseum was on September 18, 1966 when the Oakland Raiders played the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs won 32-10 with Len Dawson tossing three touchdowns in the effort. Prior to the Coliseum, the Raiders played at Frank Youell Field. The need for parking at nearby Laney College led to its demolition in 1969.
