Halftime Rearview Review: How Super are the Chiefs? – Part 3 – I love life. I love living. I love me. I love numbers. I love analyzing. I love being a quirky analyst. Which brings us to today and Part 3 and answering the question everyone is begging to hear the answer to “How Super are the Chiefs?”
The offense is above average Super Bowl quality and the defense is in the toilet, or not?? Great question. We keep digging… because that is what an analyst does. So let’s get after it, by checking into some oddball statistics that will provide a different perspective.
Scoring
Observations: SB’s require Top 10 offenses, but only mid-range defenses in terms of scoring. Despite the offensive revolution, SB’s neither score more today nor do defenses allow more points than before! (see yellow highlights)
The Unusual: High scoring offenses have lackluster scoring defenses. This is a shocker! (see red highlights)
Summary: Despite all the praise heaped upon the Chiefs high-powered nuclear offense, and all the criticism dumped upon the nuclear waste defense, the Scoring margin is the same for the 2018 Chiefs as 12 SB contestants.
Maybe Sutton did not Suck so Bad Conclusion: The 2018 Chiefs win and lose as a team!
Colombo Scoring
Just One More Thing Observation: Three of the past 5 years have seen opp
onents score more than their average against the Chiefs.
Dang It – Part III Conclusion: The more points the Chiefs score… the more the opponents score!
Scoring Differential
Observations: SB’s have a 2 possession win margin and lose by 1 possession (albeit a touchdown and 2 point conversion. (see yellow highlights)
The Unusual: In recent years SB’s occasionally get embarrassed. (see red highlights)
Summary: If the defense stunk so bad, why was our largest loss only 7 and our average loss margin 4? Unlike 4 of the past 6 SB contestants, the 2018 Chiefs never embarrassed themselves (point-wise), and had a chance to win every game. (see green highlights)
Maybe the Defense Does not Stink so Bad Conclusion: The 2018 Chiefs defense kept losses close!
Scoring & TOP
Observations: SB’s hold time of possession in favor of the offense by less than two minutes. (see yellow highlights)
The Unusual: SB’s rarely score more than 1 point per minute yet give up points even slower (red highlights)
Summary: Even though the defense gave up more points per minute on the field, the offense scored so quickly, the 2018 Chiefs had higher average net margin of points per possession minute. (green highlights)
Time of Possession matters less Conclusion: The 2018 Chiefs Net Points per Minute was SUPER!
Summary of Summaries
What do statistics, such as the one’s reviewed, mean? What do they truly tell us, if anything? Honestly nothing and simultaneously everything. After all this research, I concluded football statistics only tell us, at BEST, the probability or likelihood, our team might win or lose. Sure, stats quantitatively tell us our teams weaknesses and strengths, but that is a fact most rabies infested fans already knew, definitively or intuitively! We just now have precision for water cooler and blog discussions.
At the end of the day there is only one single statistic that makes a lick of difference… W’s and L’s
And even then, Wins and Losses are not proven factual with a 100% certainty until the end of the game. OK. Some teams have lost way before the end of the game, but never for sure until the final gun sounds.
Your thoughts my friends? Think Abundance!!
