Chiefs: Top Remarks From SB LIV – remember that, ”Keep matriculating the ball down the field boys” moment in Super Bowl IV? As you know by now, Super Bowl LIV was Mic’d Up and so Chiefs fans had plenty of insights into all the things players, coaches, and others, were saying during the game. Just like we were privy to the Mic’d Up moments of Hank Stram in Super Bowl IV, the first time the league Mic’d Up any player or coach. So, let’s take a look at some of those moments from LIV.
Before we get to that, there’s a new story circulating about Patrick Mahomes, which stretches his already considerable legend to the land of beyond belief. Apparently, in practice, Mahomes has his receivers run routes with their hands up but… WITH THEIR EYES CLOSED… and then he hits them in the hands so they can practice catches the ball by feel alone. Wow… Mahomes makes Jedi Mind Tricks sound like concierge directions for your children. I recall, as a child, being amazed that Packers’ QB, Bart Starr, used to throw the ball through the hole in a moving tire, hung from a tree. Now, Mahomes takes that to a whole new dimensional reality. Other quarterback’s of this generation are going to have to step up their game considerably to even be mentioned in the same breath. Without further adieu, here are the Top remarks from Super Bowl LIV:
“You’ve worked so hard all your life. You never ever really got the recognition you deserve.” – Kelce’s father — aka, Pappa Kelce — said this while hugging him, and crying, after the game, down on the field.
“We ain’t got no curfew tonight” – uttered while waving his hands, this was Frank Clark with his daughter on his shoulders. She had no idea what he was even saying.
“Ain’t no better time to be great than today.” – Mahomes was speaking to his teammates prior to their going down the field for three straight scores.
“I smell blood in the water.” – Frank Clark spoke those words after the D got a stop and the offense had just scored the first of three late game TDs.
“Ya’ll gonna make a movie about this.” – Chris Jones was sitting on the bench awaiting his opportunity to go back into the game and said those words after they come back had begun.
“They’re gonna talk about this forever.” – Patrick Mahomes walked down the bench area saying this to his team mates after the TD to Kelce which came right after the Jet Wasp to Hill.
“We’re going down again, you gotta believe that right now.” – WR coach Greg Lewis to Mecole Hardman and Tyreek Hill who were sitting on the bench right after they had made the score, 20-to-17.
“We ain’t done. We ain’t done. We ain’t done.” – Once he was on a roll, Mahomes yelled this to his teammates on sideline, after the score was 24-20.
“This how we want it, it’s on us.” – trying to stir his teammates up, Tyrann Mathieu screamed this at his buddies on sideline, after the score was 24-20.
“We need a first down, we need a first down, we need a first down.” – this was Mahomes speaking to Damien Williams as they walked back on the field leading 24-to-20… two plays before DWill scored a 38 TD.
“Chiefs Kingdom has firmly planted it’s flag on top of football’s highest summit.” – Mitch Holthus bellowed those words as Damien Williams danced across the back of the end zone making following his TD the score, 31-to-20.
“Kansas City, you’ve got a champion in the Chiefs Kingdom.” – spoken in vintage Mitch Holthus hyperbole.
“I think I just woke up from my dream.” – howled in the aftermath of SB LIV, CB, Rashad Fenton then did a backflip.
“I’m a champion, I’m a champion man!” – Derrick Nnadi, in disbelief.
Some of the most compelling scenes following SB LIV were: watching Daniel Sorensen invite his kids in to his arms on the confetti filled turf, and the same with Anthony Sherman. Watching those kids run into their father’s arms and knocking them over. Pure joy! Perhaps even more endearing was seeing Tyrann Mathieu cradle his new born child, Violet, in his arms while she was being feed from a bottle.
After the game, 49ers George Kittle was talking to Chiefs Cam Erving and saying, “Tell Kelce… I can’t find him… Tell Kelce if you see him. Drink a beer for me.” Kittle was also Mic’d Up for the game and said down he stretch, when it appeared the Chiefs had the game locked up, “I will be back here, with a vengeance.” Just what you’d expect from a top competitor.
Right after Damien Williams scored his late game TD running the ball in from 38 yards out, Patrick Mahomes went to hug coach Reid and their conversation is worth repeating and remembering as they embraced:
Mahomes: “That’s awesome, that’s awesome coach.” – with his voice cracking,
Reid: Let’s get it done, let’s get it done, all the time.
Mahomes: Yes sir. Yes sir. Yes sir.”
It’s one of the most touching moments, shared between a master and his pupil and I’ll never forget it. In the classroom, we teachers would experience those kinds of interactions on a semi-regular basis… without the contact of course… but kids are so open and moldable that it is the reason I stuck with teaching… over coaching… for 39 years. Now, in a very private moment between two people who have grown together for the past three years, the preciousness of that expression, by each of them, is so special… but we’ll never really know what those words they used meant to the other. At least we got a glimpse into their relationship for one brief moment in time.
Then before Andy Reid let go of Pat Mahomes, he kissed him on the cheek. Not to be taken for granted, those kinds of exchanges don’t happen frequently in the world of NFL men. At least, not that I have ever witnessed. From there, it was time to celebrate the biggest win in Kansas City Chiefs history in 50 years… and 22 days… to be exact.
With all the memorable remarks made by so many contributors to the Chiefs victory in Super Bowl LIV, it may be the kiss I remember most. The kiss of appreciation. The kiss of acceptance. The kiss of promise.
I can’t wait for more kisses.
