The Chiefs Defense With Willie Gay In It

The Chiefs Defense With Willie Gay In It – There’s been a lot of talk about the Chiefs draft. One of my favorite selections was the one of Linebacker, Willie Gay Jr., with the 63rd pick by the Kansas City Chiefs. One of the deficiencies in the Chiefs 2019 Defense, even though it saw a ton of improvement from the preseason to the the Super Bowl, was the lack of coverage skills of their linebackers. With the addition of Willie Gay, that can, and has, changed in an instant. Here, Craig Stout of ArrowheadPride talks about Gay’s athleticism:

With 4.46 speed in the 40, and an evil intent when he hits, Gay is the perfect fit for Steve Spagnuolo’s defense which calls for players to fly to the ball, and take it away whenever possible.

Keysor goes on to explain Gay’s talents in quite rosey terms:

Gay doesn’t just have speed and a decent amount of fluidity in coverage, he also demonstrates good instincts when asked to drop back.

He also has the speed to hang with most running backs and the size to even contend with tight ends in man coverage.

Gay was often asked to blitz on obvious passing downs, and he used the threat of blitzing and his athleticism to bait quarterbacks into bad throws as well.

Here is a video by Brett Kollmann a week before the Super Bowl explaining how Steve Spagnuolo’s defense made changes and improving during the season. Watch with the idea of inserting Willie Gay into this scheme.

Although Kollmann focuses on the defensive line mostly, the coaches-view from behind the defense also allows you to see just how the linebackers roll to the holes and maintain gap integrity. It’s easy to picture Willie Gay making Spags defense really pop and more importantly, improve. If not from day one, then by mid-season at the latest.

Here, Ryan Tracy and Dan Harms from RGR Football take a look specifically at how Willie Gay will be best used in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense.

So much of the improvement that Brett Kollmann talks about in the defensive front was due to players being disciplined and executing the plan on any given play. As the year passed by, each defensive lineman was able to follow the scheme design for each play. Here, you can see the Willie Gay is following a defensive scheme design and he comes up with an interception because of it.

If it’s your turn to do the dishes, then you must make sure the sink is empty for the next person whose job it is to make the next meal. If not… well, I’m guessing you’ve all experienced that messy scenario. The point is… it looks like Willie Gay is a player who can do the dishes, when it’s his turn.

One more video (4:33) on Willie Gay, and this one is of Derrick Johnson and Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride, talking about Willie Gay. Enjoy!
