Chiefs and NFL Alchemy Weekend: Tracking ALL the NFL Cuts and Moves

Chiefs and NFL Alchemy Day: Tracking ALL the NFL Cuts and Moves – There are 3 main definitions of the word, alchemy at dictionary.com but I’m going with the second one that says: any magical power or process of transmuting a common substance, usually of little value, into a substance of great value. Because… if you haven’t learned by now that the Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach kind of has this magical power over the roster and the cap, then you’ve been living in the Galaxy called MACS0647-JD… which is about 13.3 billion light-years away. You may recall that UDFA – CB Charvarius Ward was traded for, about this time of the year two years ago. However, what’s more important to know is that tomorrow — at 4:00 P.M. Eastern — is when every team in the NFL must cut their roster down to the 53 player limit. In the Chiefs case, that means cutting 37 players from the 80 they already have on the books. -Laddie

A lot of thought goes into building the final 53-man roster and Brett Veach has done a masterful job from the time he became the Chiefs GM. I have often described him as the “Maverick” GM. I have written that his work has at times, seemed magical – think about pulling a rabbit out of the hat. As we roll down to the final days before opening night, keeping in mind at the same time the types of moves Veach has made at this time, I consider that Brett Veach is working the phones thinking “trade” and who he might obtain to make the Chiefs Roster stronger. -David

So, today is a moving day for more than 1,100 NFL men and I can guarantee you that Veach knows more about each of them than just their names. What I’m also hoping he knows is the names of the players who can strengthen the Chiefs cornerback room. If he was able to pull off a Parker Ehinger-for-Charvarius Ward trade with Dallas two years back, I’m sure he has more stardust in his wizardly bag of magic. It’s a quote you often hear coming out of his mouth, “We loved him when he was in college” so I’m positive Veach and his crack team of researchers are considering specific players and targeting them for a trade, or focusing on players who can be picked up 24 hours after they’re cut. The problem there is… the Chiefs are now last on the list of teams who can claim a cut player. That’s what happens when you’re the Super Bowl Champions… because, the Chiefs are the Super Bowl Champions (as you can tell, I love saying that). -Laddie

Laddie opened the consideration of a late trade by broaching the topic of his willingness to make late moves just before the season begins. He references the Parker Ehinger trade to obtain Charvarius Ward. That was indeed a wizardly move. My thoughts turn to the strongest position group on the roster: Wide Receiver. The top 3 spots are solidly in place: Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Mecole Hardman. I immediately deliberated my way through the depth chart and players who have more than flashed in camp. But among all of them, who is it that other NFL GM’s might covet, knowing their capability from exposure of the player and accomplishments despite limited snaps. It seems to me that Demarcus Robinson fits that bill and Brett Veach could be the wizard stirring the mystical pot! True, Demarcus Robinson wants to be a Chief and that might prevent consideration of trading him. On the other hand, he could go to a team that is desperate for help at wideout. Robinson would benefit from a move like this and be able to more than showcase his talent and ability while getting the snaps and targets he so richly deserves. I am not stating I wish to see Robinson depart. -David

I can see your wisdom in trading away DRob, but if no other teams were willing to give him a contract in Free Agency, it’s hard to see a team trading for him now, even though it has been stated by several recently that he could be a #1 or #2 WR on another team. Of course, the need to swap players with another team arises from the Chiefs need at corner. I think that even if Bashaud Breeland was not suspended, the team would be one injury away from being on life-support in the secondary, even though I know you’ve said that Tyrann Mathieu would be stepping up into the slot CB role. Now, with Breeland not even allowed in the building until October, if one of their CBs goes down with an injury, opponents will know exactly how to succeed against the Chiefs. So, a trade does seem likely, but maybe not a WR like DRob. -Laddie

The trade two years ago was made and the story was written and in the books. Now, can Robinson be the focus of a trade to bring in a talent that Brett Veach and his scouting crew covet? For example, the needs of various position groups need to be strengthened and I could see a trade for a starting cornerback, or a linebacker of promise or even an offensive lineman. This trade could also be for the future which begs the question: what position group is Brett Veach focused on building up next? You can make the call on this and post your thoughts. Would you trade Robinson to gain a starter at one of the position groups that requires focus, a group where they will be using a high draft pick next year? Robinson is not the only WR who might be known well enough to obtain that talent that Veach and Company understand to be a high ceiling player. Could Pringle garner enough strength that another team would make such a move? -David

How about trading a player off of the Defensive Line? Recently, Price Carter suggested that Breeland Speaks could be playing for the NY Giants on opening day. Speaks is the only DL that I can think of right now who might fit the bill. Like you, I think this will be a fun day… or week -Laddie

Considering teams needing an offensive lineman, we have Nick Allegretti and Darryl Williams for example, who would mirror more closely the Ehinger/Ward trade. Yes, today is a positively fun day as the opening of the season is about to arrive! Go Chiefs! -David
