“Leave Patrick Mahomes alone”, is the surprising phrase that is being echoed nation-wide. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and his family is not new to harassment throughout the season. After all, success does bring everyone out of the woodworks. Nevertheless, the amount of hate and persecution that Patrick Mahomes receives is unnecessary.
Let’s get something straight: Patrick Mahomes is one of the best QBs to ever face the league. With records like “youngest quarterback to be named Super Bowl MVP”, and “having 4000+ passing yards in three of [his] first four NFL seasons” just like Dan Marino and Peyton Manning, Mahomes is no stranger to success. With this success comes criticism as Patrick Mahomes turns from a random city’s football player, into what is possibly the new leader of a dynasty, following the footsteps of Tom Brady. Still, the criticism he receives, especially when lumped in with his family, seems absolutely unnecessary.
Speaking of Tom Brady, he himself has received a LOT of hate over the years, but even then, he was winning for years and years and years, and people wanted to see someone new. This isn’t justification for others’ behavior, but it’s understandable why some were getting tired of him, despite him being an amazing player.
It has only been 5 seasons of Mahomes, not all of which were Super Bowl worthy, so why is Patrick Mahomes receiving all this criticism and hate?
We need to get one thing straight: the media LOVES a juicy gossip-filled story, no matter how much it needs to bend the truth. It will do whatever it needs to feed a narrative, and when it sees a hate-train going, it capitalizes on it,
Most of the hate towards Patrick Mahomes comes from multiple angles: his brother, his fiancée, and his success.
To begin with, it needs to be stated that there is as much hate and criticism towards Patrick, as there is support. Though many are constantly debating “Is Patrick Mahomes washed out?” — which is just ridiculous to me — just as many are supporting him,
Even the Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid, agrees that Patrick Mahomes is better than a jelly donut.
Even with everyone having their own opinions, it’s clear that success brings out the negativity in many. I’m not saying this is right, I’m not saying this is even a good justification or excuse for the negative behavior, but sometimes that’s just how the world works. It’s also important to note that there are thousands of people that are straight up jealous of Patrick. I mean, who wouldn’t want to have a QB on their team who is debated as someone who’s starting a dynasty in their city, and someone who is constantly compared to the greatest players of all time. Furthermore, who wouldn’t want to be a skilled player themselves, with millions of dollars and a happy family.
Among all this criticism and hate, it’s important to remember all that Patrick Mahomes has done for his community. This is something that’s more important than all the stats, the media, and everyone’s opinions.
In a recent Article by Pete Sweeney for ArrowheadPride called, “Patrick Mahomes’ work off the field is as impressive as his performance on it” Sweeney said:
“The Chiefs’ QB’s foundation — 15 and the Mahomies — is dedicated to improving the lives of children in the Kansas City community and beyond… While Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is known worldwide for his on-the-field accolades, what deserves further attention is what he has managed to do for the Kansas City community — and far beyond — off of it.”
Firstly, Mahomes has his own foundation, called, “15 and the Mahomies.” This foundation is dedicated to bettering the lives of children in Kansas City from providing educational resources, to bettering their health and wellness. This is extremely important and respectable work that’s not only good for Mahomes’ image in the face of all his haters, but way more important in what it actually accomplishes, which is bettering the community and helping so many children that are in need.
Not only that, but he has heavily invested in his city, KC, from joining the K.C. Royals’ ownership group, to investing in Sporting KC, and even bringing Whataburger Fast Food Restaurant to Kansas City which so many were asking for… for years,
None of this ever seems to be enough for those that slander Patrick, but it doesn’t matter. No matter where you go with your career, no matter how helpful and kind you are, and no matter how much you give back to the world, there’s always someone that’s not going to like you. It’s impossible to have everyone on your side, especially as someone in the public eye who can get judged by people from all backgrounds and opinions. This is not only something that applies to Patrick Mahomes, but something that is important to remember for all of us. It’s an important lesson to learn that you can’t be best friends with everyone, and that’s okay. What’s important is what is in your heart.
Further down the line of criticism, there’s the portion that comes from others criticizing his family. There are many that troll his fiancée Brittany Matthews, and his brother Jackson Mahomes,
Nevertheless, I can’t understate how important it is to keep in mind that they don’t have anything to do with Patrick Mahomes. He is his own person, not to mention again the fact that Patrick is wonderful on and off the field. If Mahomes was somehow being controversial and doing things that are questionable and unethical, then the argument could be made that he is a great player, but a crappy person… however, this argument simply can’t be made,
So what now? Do we just sit here and watch him get slandered?
Well, another big thing to remember with haters, trolls, and those who criticize for the sake of criticizing, is that no matter how much you engage and try to prove yourself or the subject of the discussion, they will keep picking and trying to break you down. Yet another life lesson to remember, is that unless it’s a productive and honest discussion or debate, engaging the offending party won’t make them stop, no matter how great of an argument you make, or no matter how true what you’re saying is.
With all that being said, Patrick Mahomes’ success and community betterments can’t be forgotten by those of us who understand and positively embrace his success. He’s an amazing football player, a great father, and an even better human being behind closed doors when it really matters. We can all take him as an example, and strive to make those around us and our community a better place.
No matter how much criticism and hate he may get from trolls, us true fans know that it’s unwarranted, unnecessary, and uncalled for. No matter how much we may try to argue the opposite and engage in unproductive discussions about why Mahomes isn’t a bad person, what’s more important is to engage in productive discussions about why Mahomes is a great person.
Never forget all that Patrick Mahomes does, never forget all that he has done up to this point, and remember that no matter what anyone says, all that matters is what we know to be the honest truth: Patrick Mahomes is a stellar human being, and any hate or criticism he gets from trolls isn’t something that needs to be given any attention. So say it with me y’all: Leave Patrick Mahomes Alone!
Go Chiefs!
