One Case for Trading Up in the Draft

The Portent for the 2022 Draft

With twelve draft picks in 2022, the Chiefs have numerous directions they can go. However, I do not think they will draft twelve players.

Brett Veach will move around in the draft. His goal will be to select players who he believes will impact the 2022 Season. Instead, I think they will use their 7th-round picks(and possibly a future pick) to get into the 4th or 5th round, and they will trade back to gain others in the top 50 or the top 100. The earlier they can move up, the better it will be for this draft. I do not think they retain the 7th-round draft picks and will use them to gain draft power as the draft flows. I anticipate that the Chiefs will end up with 7 player selections at the end of round three.

In today’s example, I use the trade-up likelihood for Round One.

At the same time, Veach has eight picks in the first four rounds. I do not think that he stands pat with those picks either. For example, Brett Veach could use one of the Round-One Picks to move up in the draft, coupled with a 3rd round pick to move up to about pick 20. Veach would still have a first-round pick to use and a third-round pick. It’s possible that a trade back of the remaining first-round pick could be on the table. The goal would be to get an early 2nd-round pick and acquire the same target player they would have chosen in the first round. In doing so, Veach would receive an additional round-three(top 100 draft pick). Who knows what will happen in the flow of draft picks as the fluidity of the draft flows. The Position Needs are numerous. WR, Two DEs, a DT, two CBs, and a LB. I can also see adding an OT in the process.

Projecting a Trade-Up!

If I were to hazard a guess about the player of choice Veach might trade up to get, I would state that it will be a skilled player. It will not be a QB, RB, or TE. Such a move would mean they are trading up to select a WR.

Jameson Williams Remains My Choice

Jameson Williams was a Top-30 Visitor on Friday, April 15th

The much-ballyhooed visit may have import. Williams posted on Twitter photos of KC that he took during his visit.

It isn’t easy to believe that Jameson Williams(WR, Alabama) will select after Pick #20. Presuming that is going to be the case, other teams will be targeting him between Pick #10 and Pick #21. What does that mean for the Chiefs? Jameson is an exceptional talent among all the WRs in the draft. He has speed, twitchiness, and the ability to start and stop within his route running. Jameson also is explosive off the LoS. He possesses much of the talent missed since Ty Hill departed for Miami. Not only is Williams a complete skill set fit for the Chief’s offense, but his ceiling is also even higher than you might expect.

What happens with Jameson might be similar to Ty Hill’s development at Kansas City. Think back over Hill’s career. He wasn’t Hill in season One. It was in season two that Hill came into his own. I anticipate the proposition that a similar development will occur with Jameson. I believe that Williams will be an immediate impact player in his first season in the NFL. What happens from that point will be due to his discipline development as a WR in the NFL; It will depend on his developing an accord with his quarterback.

Will Brett Veach Use Three Picks to move up to pick #12 to Draft Williams?

I am using such an early pick trade-up construct because I think Williams is that type of generational talent. Yesterday, I wrote of a similar appraisal of Edge Defender, David Ojabo. Today’s effort covers the Skilled(Hands) type of a player.

You can take a peek at Jameson William’s Highlight film here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccT4vBfgDC8

After viewing the film, you cannot deny that Williams Checks all the boxes.

Do I anticipate that Williams will be drafted between Pick #15-and-20? Nope. I think due to the injury, he will be selected after Pick #20. If Brett Veach believes that Williams is of the class of that type of generational skill? I make sure that I move up and draft him.

That is how I see Jameson Williams in the 2022 Draft. The question is: does Brett Veach & Co. see the same thing? Do you?
