K.C. Wins Pendulum Game vs Vegas

K.C. Wins Pendulum Game vs Vegas

Laddie Morse

The Kansas City Chiefs have won another heart monitor game. At first, the pendulum appeared to swing in favor of the Las Vegas Raiders, especially when they went up 17-to-0 on the Chiefs in the first half. In the end, the good guys won the day and the Chiefs came out on top 30-to-29. I had predicted the Chiefs would win 31-to-24 and that the game would be closer than many believed it would be… I just didn’t think it would be this close.

All anyone really needs to know is that the Chiefs scored a TD four straight times they touched the ball. The most amazing fact about those TDs is, they were all scored by one player: Mr. All-Word Tight End, Travis Kelce. The pendulum seemed to swing the Chiefs way when they were down 7 to 20 before the half when they sent their substitute kicker out onto the field, even though he had already missed a 41-yarder, and let me try from 59-yards with 3 seconds left in the half. Patrick Mahomes received the second half kickoff and then drove the field in 12 plays and scored a touchdown, then after a three-and-out for Vegas followed that up with the go-ahead touchdown.

A Tight End Supreme Being

Travis Kelce set a team record of scoring four (4) touchdowns in this game. FYI, only Kellen Winslow Sr. has ever scored more TDs in a single game than Travis Kelce did tonight. What many fans don’t know is that Kelce is plying in his 10th NFL season and that he turned 33 years old earlier this month on October 5th. Travis and his brother Jason have a podcast called New Heights and recently they addressed the issue of fans running onto the field:

Patrick Mahomes Stats

Mahomes was 29-of-42 for 292 passing yard and 4 TDs in this game. He maintains his MVP status as far as I’m concerned. His rival, Derek Carr was 19-of-30 for 241 yards and 2 TDs. Mahomes was sacked 3 times (2 times by Max Crosby) but ended up with a rating of 117.7. Carr was sacked twice and ended up with a 110.6 rating.

Player of the Game

It’s hard to think of any other player winning this award expect Travis Kelce. True, he only had 25 yards receiving, but his 4 TDs set a record that will likely stand with the Chiefs for decades. Here’s Kelce’s 1st TD when K.C. was down 17-to-nothing:

.

I couldn’t find a video of his second TD but here’s his third TD to help K.C. vault into the lead:

.

Last, but certainly not least, was Kelce’s 4th TD which in the end, helped K.C. maintain the one point margin needed for a victory:

It seems appropriate that the author of this quote is Travis Kelce, talking about Patrick Mahomes:

Rough Refereeing

There was a big call against Chris Jones, for the second game in three games, but this time it had nothing to do with his mouthing off. However, it was a so-called call on his “roughing the passer.” Chris Jones addressed this issue after the game and he probably says it best: it’s something the league must take a look at.

.

It wasn’t just Jones who disagreed with the referee either. So did HC Andy Reid who kept trying to get Carl Cheffers, the head ref’s attention after the call, but couldn’t. Patrick Mahomes said, “It wasn’t the greatest call in the world.” Said he’s seen Reid that mad before, but not about a referee’s call. Adam Teicher of ESPN says:

Here’s Adam Teicher’s conversation with Cheffers:

I agree with Chris Jones. The league needs to review that situation. Maybe it’s as the announcers have suggested, it should be a re-viewable call. Obviously, something needs to be done.

A Coaches Decision

When the Raiders new HC Josh McDaniels decided to go for it on a two-point conversion, I thought it was a mistake. They turned out not to make it… by inches, but if they had, they’d be singing on the bus on the way home and the Chiefs and their fans would be crying me a river. Thus, the final score came out as 29-to-30 Chiefs. A day late and a dollar short.

Future Shock

What’s the future look like? Let me look into my crystal ball. Don’t rest too long on the heartaches that this game provided, because this next Sunday the Chiefs will be hosting the Buffalo Bills. You know, the 13 second Bills game when we beat them last January? Yep, those Bills, and you can bet they haven’t forgotten that game either. It’ll be the 4-and-1 Buffalo Bills vs the 4-and-1 Kansas City Chiefs.

Before the season began, I had predicted that if the Chiefs could go 4-and-3 in their first 7 games — before the BYE Week — they’d be in good shape for the first part of their schedule which was just that difficult. So, with win number 4 under their belts already, they should be in good shape now heading into the Bills game next weekend. Week Six, here we come! Go Chiefs!
