Chiefs: Mock Talk Monday

Laddie Morse

This is the third Monday before the NFL kicks off it’s annual Draft and this year, it’s right here in Kansas City, Missouri. So, it’s time to take a look at what many are predicting for the Chiefs picks in this year draft. Let’s begin with a mock I did recently.

.

In this mock, I traded backwards in the second round and picked up a pick.

.

.

The first pick I made was for DT Gervon Dexter who weighs 312 lbs. and stands 6-foot-6 tall. His height is what attracted me here plus he’d give Chris Jones another player to help him bat passes down and be a force in the middle, and he should also help LB Nick Bolton stop teams with good running games as well as those with ample passing attacks. That means those teams who can run successfully against the Chiefs will have to depend on throwing the ball, and we know Patrick Mahomes can beat anyone who wants to make it an arms race. If there was a player in the draft who reminded me of Chris Jones the most, it would be Gervon Dexter… and that’s a very good thing. DrafTek has Dexter as the 76th best overall prospect and CBS Sports has him as their 54th best.. but I can see him going much earlier.

.

.

Question: what do you think of Gervon Dexter as a first round pick for the Chiefs?

.

Next, let’s examine RGR Football’s Sunday Night Mock LIVE event. Here is what they finalized.

.

.

They (Daniel Harms in this case) made a trade up to get Jordan Addison, a WR out of USC. Addison is ranked 30th overall by CBS Sports and 25th overall by DrafTek. He is 5-foot-11 and weighs 171 lbs. which seems light in the britches as far as I’m concerned.

The lastwordonsports.com has a Chiefs mock which came out yesterday. Here what they have said:

.

.

In the first round they have mocked: WR Zay Flowers,

In the second round they have mocked: OT Cody Mauch

In the third round they have mocked: LB Daiyan Henley

In the fourth round they have mocked: RB Sean Tucker

In the fourth round again, they have mocked: EDGE Nick Hampton

In the fifth round they have mocked: Safety Trey Dean

In the sixth round they have mocked: EDGE Mike Morris

In the seventh round they mocked: QB Aidan O’Connell

Also in the seventh round they mocked: DT Byron Young

Also, and lastly, in the seventh round they mocked: LB Charlie Thomas

Here’s another Mock I did this weekend. This one, like many others of mine, was done at ProFootballNetwork.com and came out like this:

.

R1 P31 EDGE Will McDonald IV – Iowa State

R2 P32 C Joe Tippmann – Wisconsin

R3 P32 WR Tank Dell – Houston

R4 P20 EDGE Karl Brooks – Bowling Green

R4 P32 WR Xavier Hutchinson – Iowa State

R5 P31 OT Warren McClendon – Georgia

R6 P20 CB Mekhi Blackmon – USC

R6 P40 LB Mike Jones Jr – LSU

R7 P8 CB Terell Smith – Minnesota

R7 P32 WR Justin Shorter – Florida

R7 P33 S Quindell Johnson – Memphis

.

I assumed in this case, that the Chiefs would be prioritizing the EDGE position first and foremost. Maybe they will, maybe the won’t. It seems to me that the Offensive Tackle position is very good at the top of the draft then the quality diminishes rapidly from there. So, it might be better to take a Tackle first off and then worry about the other positions of need. We just don’t know how the Chiefs have graded the prospects so time will tell.

Here’s KingdomConnection’s first mock of the year:

.

.

.

Dawand Jones is a 6-foot-8, 374 lbs. big man. David Bell has talked about his slow foot speed and I can concur. You may be in love with his size, because Orlando Brown Jr. was about the same size — not weight wise — so if you’re using that as a measuring stick to see if the Chiefs would be interested in him, first look at his tangibles… which means his numbers, which aren’t good (he runs a 5.35 40 yard dash).
