Preseason Game One: Chiefs at Saints

Laddie Morse

To many, the beginning of the end of the last season comes with the beginning of the next season, and that day is today at noon. When the Kansas City Chiefs go up against the New Orleans Saints it marks the start of the 2023 season, even if these games don’t count against their won/loss records. Last year the preseason games were limited to three games so every second counts when evaluating players who could make the team.

“Prepare and Go Shine”

HC Andy Reid says every player on the roster will play in this game, and for good reason. He says they deserve the right to play in this game and he encourages each to do as well as possible to put the best tape out there for other teams to see. Also, he wants each player to make it as hard as possible on himself and GM Brett Veach when it comes to making the decisions about who to keep and who not to keep (0:27).

New Orleans Saints 2023 Draft Picks

.

.

With 4 top 103 picks, the Saints should come out of this draft in excellent shape. With QB Derek Carr leaving the Las Vegas Raiders and joining the Saints this offseason, it’s not the only storyline out of the Big Easy worth mentioning. WR Michael Thomas should be difficult for any set of DBs to cover but add to his totals, 1,042 yards that WR Chris Olave created last year and you can see why he was up for Rookie of the Year. Plus, RB Alvin Kamara may be suspended for the first three games of the 2023 regular season ,but he can still play in their preseason opener.

While I doubt the Saints will be playing their starters for much more than the first drive of the game — like K.C. — they may allow their defense to play for longer sets than that.

The Saints Defense has been very good for several years now and ranked in the Top Five in 2022. With Cameron Jordan playing DE, Demario Davis at LB, and Marshon Lattimore playing DB on the back end, DT Khalen Saunders made a solid decision signing with the Saints.

Still, it’s difficult seeing any NFL Defense stopping a Chiefs Mahomes and Kelce led offense right now (0:56).
