Chiefs Give Away Preseason Game 1 in the Last Minute

Laddie Morse

It could have been called the tail of two halves but when the final minute of the game arrived and Patrick Mahomes could only be found standing on the sideline, the Kansas City Chiefs back-up, back-up, back-up QB, Chris Oladokun, threw an Interception to the New Orleans Saints third string DE Kyle Phillips which he took to the K.C. 22 yard line. From there they kicked a Field Goal to make the final score 26-to-24.

While were not supposed to care if these Preseason Games hurt when you lose, this one hurt anyway, especially since the Chiefs already had it in the bag… then found a way to blunder the ending. Those kinds ot things haven’t happened to the Chiefs ever since Patrick Mahomes came to town. However, he wasn’t on the field for this flub, so we can’t blame him.

Snaps Ahoy

The way the Chiefs used their first string players and their backups was the real story of this one. Here’s the Offensive story of the snaps:

Perhaps the best way to read these tea leaves is to start at the bottom of each “Snaps List” and work upwards. In other words: take the QB group for example: Mahomes ended with 6 snaps so we can expect he’ll make the team. On the OL listing here: the one’s with the least snaps include: Joe Thuney, Jawaan Taylor, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, and Donovan Smith… who should all be counted on the make the final 53 man roster. Here’s the Defensive Snaps listing as offered by Adam Teicher:

The first team offense wasn’t what we hoped for, and nether was the second team offense. After they exited, the Chiefs began to hit and make sense. DC Steve Spagnuolo said prior to the game that he wanted to see his players tackle… but it seemed to take some time before they remembered how to do that.

One highlight of the game was the play of WR Justyn Ross. He had two catches and while that doesn’t seem like much, one of his catches was for a TD (0:26):

Here’s a highlight of the game, when third string QB Shane Buechele hit Kekoa Crawford in the end zone for a TD:

Some criticized Patrick Mahomes for celebrating more than he did during the Super Bowl, but I think it just shows what a great team mate he is. Here’s some highlights from the game vs the Saints (4:59):
