Are Chris Jones Contract Incentives Attainable?

Lisa Foxx

Please help me welcome our new writer, Lisa Foxx:

.

Lisa has been a football fan all her life. Growing up, she was  always involved in sports, and in the fall, would play pickup football games with her siblings and the neighborhood kids. Yes, she played with the boys; and yes, we played tackle football. She was the running back because she was faster and smaller than most of the boys. Lisa also played organized football, but the older she got the fewer opportunities she had to play. So, she excelled in other sports and lived vicariously through her brothers and nephews who played football in college and in — > the NFL. She has been a Chiefs fan for as long as she can remember and she’s passionate about the team. Lisa says,

.

“I feel very fortunate to be able to say that I’m able to witness the greatest football player to ever play the game (and he’s on MY team) and the rise of a budding Chiefs dynasty, all at a time in my life when I can truly appreciate it.”

.

The majority of Lisa’s professional career has been in radio broadcasting; she began as an office manager for a small country radio station in central Kansas before moving on-air. Lisa moved to Kansas City early in her radio career and worked part-time for a couple of local radio stations before being offered a full time on-air position. She eventually took an extended break from radio to pursue other career interests, but Lisa always ended up back with her true love, which is broadcasting. She has more than 20 years’ experience in major market radio. She is a published author, a national audio producer and voice over talent, and a former member of the award-winning Chiefs Radio Network. Lisa currently manages a small shop in Overland Park, KS.

Once again, please help me give Lisa Foxx a warm welcome to our site!

Are Chris Jones Contract Incentives Attainable?

by Lisa Foxx

.

.

.

Chris Jones gambled on himself when it came to contract negotiations this past off-season and, well… the results of his hold out are questionable, at best. It’s widely known throughout Chiefs Kingdom and the NFL that Jones was holding out in an attempt to force more money out of the Chiefs organization and Chiefs President Clark Hunt. Jones did just that in the end, after the two sides came to an agreement for the 2023 season, but only through incentive will Jones have an opportunity to make more money on a one-year deal with the Chiefs. The 29-year-old defensive tackle is still set to become a free agent at the end of the 2023-24 season.

.

.

Although he has an opportunity to earn “considerably more money” according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the new one-year deal agreed upon by the Chiefs and Jones’ representation doesn’t add any additional money to the $19.5M base salary that he was already due to make this year. Jones can earn more through incentives that have been added to his contract.

.

.

If the star DT hits the benchmarks set forth in his new contract, Jones has the potential to earn up to $25 million this season. Here is a list of the incentives in Jones’ contract:

.

Jones must:

· play 35% of defensive snaps to receive $1M

· play 50% of defensive snaps to receive $1M

· get 10 sacks to receive $1.25M

· get 15 sacks for an additional $500,000

· earn 1st Team All-Pro AND make it to the Super Bowl to receive $1M

· earn DPOY AND win Super Bowl for an additional $2M

(all incentives are LTBE – Likely To Be Earned)

.

To reach the $25 million number, not only must the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, but Jones must also finish the season as the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year. On the surface, those two goals seem quite attainable. After all, the Chiefs are perennial Super Bowl contenders, having appeared in three of the last four Super Bowls and winning two of the three in which they played. As for Jones, he is considered one of the top defensive tackles in the league, and many would place him in the top spot.

.

CJ will have competition.

.

Last year (in 2022), Jones was named first team All-Pro and earned his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl nod by racking up career highs in sacks (15.5), tackles (44) and QB hits (29). Of course, some could argue that Jones had a record year in 2022 because he was coming up on a contract year, and we all know players play harder when they know a new contract is in sight. However, Jones has been terrorizing offenses for years as the stalwart member of the Chiefs D-line.

As dominant as he is, Jones has his work cut out for him if he wants to earn every dollar of those incentives in his contract. Due to Jones’ holdout, he chose to not play in the first game of the 2023 season. It was the Chiefs home opener, and instead of playing with his teammates, Jones chose to sit in a suite in Arrowhead Stadium while watching his team fall to the Detroit Lions 20-21 on the very night the Chiefs raised their Super Bowl banner in Arrowhead Stadium. That move by Jones didn’t sit well with many in Chiefs Kingdom, and it put him well behind other dominant defensive players fighting for the title of DPOY.

.

.

This means, Jones is beginning the 2023 campaign behind fellow defensive standouts, like:

.

• The Pittsburgh’s TJ Watt, the defensive end has been impressive so far in this young season with 13 total tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles and two blocked kicks.

• The Dallas Cowboys’ LB Micah Parsons is a force of nature and has accumulated 14 total tackles, four sacks, and a forced fumble.

• The Browns Miles Garrett, a defensive end, has 10 total tackles and 5½ sacks on the season with a forced fumble, as well.

• The LA Chargers linebacker Khalil Mack. Mack is on fire, so far, with 18 total tackles (14 of them solo tackles), six sacks and two forced fumbles. So, who is leading the league in almost every defensive category so far this season? Mack (BTW, Mack just missed DTs record and had 6 sacks last weekend against the Raiders, the team that originally drafted him).

Here’s a sack of CJ’s from week 4 vs. the Jets (0:12).

.

.

Comparatively, Jones has six total tackles and 3½ sacks so far on the season. This means he’s got his work cut out for him if he’s to hit all his goals. The good news for Jones is, despite holding out from OTAs and training camp, he came into the season in peak physical form and was able to jump into the second game and make a major impact. He’s going to have to keep that urgency and momentum all season in order to hit all the targets he and the team have set for him. Will he be able to do it? I wouldn’t put anything past any player on this team with proven championship pedigree, least of all Chris “Stone Cold” Jones.
