Chiefs Survive the Broncos, 19-to-8

Laddie Morse

It happened again. The Kansas City Chiefs under-performed… but won anyway. The Denver Broncos pushed the Chiefs to the brink, but came up short, extending the Chiefs winning streak over them to 16. Sweet 16, just wasn’t so sweet. It took the Chiefs Defense to play another great game to seal this victory. However, the offense had their moments of glory.

.

Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce was active for this game… when there was some doubt if he would play… but he played and was a stand out in this game. Kelce caught everything in sight going 9 for 9… that’s targets and catches… for 124 yards. His girlfriend, Taylor Swift, was in attendance again and he performed well in fornt of her. At one point late in the game, Kelce got up limping off the field so we don’t know yet if he re-injured his ankle (0:11).

Taylor was in the booth sitting next to Travis’ mother… again.

.

.

If the nation was tuned in to watch this game they were likely disappointed. Not only did the Chiefs not play well, but for her fans looking in, the shots of Taylor Swift were few and far between.

.

Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes was 30-of-40 for 306 yards and a 94.4 rating. Once again, it was not his best performance. One of the announcers said if you look at the scoring: one TD and four Field Goals on the part of Kansas City, it showed that the Chiefs didn’t do that well. PM had one TD and one INT to his name while Russell Wilson had one TD and two INTs. Wilson finished with a 46.6 rating which was low for him as he averages a 100.4 QB rating, for what many believe is a Hall of Fame career. Here’s Mahomes throws his one TD pass, to Kadarius Toney (0:07).

.

Isiah Pacheco

Many of us Chiefs fans figured before the game that the Chiefs would employ the rushing attack a lot in this game. It didn’t turn out that way as Pop (Isiah Pacheco’s nick name) had 16 carries for 62 yards and a 3.9 average per carry. The Chiefs finished with 96 total rushing yards against the worst rushing defense in the NFL. In this department… the Chiefs failed miserably. Pop was 6-for-6 on targets and catches for 36 yards giving him 98 total yards from scrimmage. Here’s one of Pop’s best catches (0:13):

.

.

Chris Jones

Chris Jones had a good game and came up with another sack which gives him 8 in a row… 8 games in a row with a sack. The Defense came up with 4 sacks total but one of those belonged to Chris Jones (0:10).

Rashee Rice

It should be noted that Rashee Rice had a good game and was 4 -for-4 on targets and catches with 72 total yards. I can see him being the WR that PM focuses more attention on going forward (0:07).

.

.

Team Penalties

The Chiefs finished the game with 7 penalties for -84 yards while the Broncos had 3 penalties for -34 yards. Once again, it looks like the referees were targeting the Chiefs as this is the 6th straight game that the Chiefs have had more penalties called on them than their opponent. The idea that other teams fans espouse in which the Chiefs are getting preferential treatment from the referees is bogus.

.

Player of the Game – Game Ball

Harrison Butker

Butker kicked four Field Goals and didn’t miss any which keeps him perfect on the season for not only Field Goals but Points After as well. Butker also kicked a 60 yard Field Goal (see below) which was pretty darn close the the NFL record of 66 yards by Justin Tucker of the Ravens in September of 2021. The Butker field goal that pushed the Chiefs score from 16 to 19 literally was the game winner as the Broncos had just scored a TD and made the two point conversion so all they had to do was score another TD and another two pointer to make it all tied up… but Butker spoiled that party (0:06 and 0:11).

The Offense just did score under 20 points. They better not do that in 16 days vs the Broncos in DENVER or they just might lose that one.

Quote of the Game

From Pete Sweeney:

.

“Nick Bolton reveals that he had a high-ankle

sprain. Tried to push through it last week, but

(he) couldn’t. He played today and said that

he feels 100%.”

.

Once again, the Chiefs play calling was abysmal and raises questions about OC Matt Nagy or Andy Reid as a play caller. Either way, the game was nearly blown based on the offensive play calling alone. These wins for the Chiefs get uglier and uglier… and I hope they can come up with a better performance — offensively — against the Chargers.
