Chiefs Headliners: 8•6•24

I want to say up front that Patrick Mahomes should have motivation all year long with all the dirt that’s been thrown his way the past few weeks. Listen to what Rich Eisen has to say about the situation (11:38):

Also, Nick Wright of First Things First has a take on Mahomes being listed as the 4th best player in the NFL (3:30):

Jon Gruden visited the Chiefs camp on Sunday. He was on the same Packers team as an assistant coach back in the early 1990s when Andy Reid was also an assistant coach there. Reid said after practice that Gruden was there because he loves football like Reid does and he has lots of good ideas

Matt Araiza is already coming on strong in Chiefs camp.

Araiza has been known by the name: “The Punt God”… a nickname he doesn’t like. However, it seems fitting and now the Chiefs have him on a one year deal for $795.000.

Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is a great coach and the combination of he and Reid together is nearly unfair. Last year his defense ranked second overall and although, this year, he lost Safety Mike Edwards and CB L’Jarius Sneed, great things are expected from his defense once again this year.

While Jaden Hicks looks like a steal for Spags, he has yet to identify who will be starting across from Trent McDuffie (0:15).

David Bell and I have done much speculating over which position the Chiefs could afford to sign this coming offseason: OG or OC? Now, it looks like GM Brett Veach has figured out a way to sign both of them … early.

If this is indeed true, the Chiefs OL will be good for many more years to come!

While I was writing this piece, Harrison Butker was re-signed to a new deal.

I’m getting different information about the amount Butker signed for. However, it does look like the Chiefs have nailed down an agrgeement with one of the best kickers in the NFL for a number of years to come.

The reason for listing “Nick and Harrison” is to make a point about being sure to re-sign Nick Bolton too… aside from getting Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith re-signed, as David Bell has pointed out above in his tweet.

It looks like the Chiefs are heading in the right direction and in the process of maintaining their core group of players. When you win two Championships in a row, that’s exactly the right thing to do.

What do you think?
