Andy Reid Speaks During First Day of Training Camp

Screen Shot 2016-07-24 at 9.35.52 PMIf you’re a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, you’ve had this day circled on your calendar for some time. Today is the day that the Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies report to training camp at St. Joe, Missouri. Head coach Andy Reid had quite a bit to say, and thanks to a couple of Facebook Live feeds, I was able to grab some of what he said.

First, when asked about Eric Berry, Reid said he had been in contact with the Chiefs star safety, and despite reports from Ian Rapport from NFL.com, he wasn’t sure if Berry would or would not report to camp on Friday with the rest of the team.

Reid did go on to say he had texted with Berry a couple of times and knew that there was a difference in the “football playing side and the business side” of the NFL.

When asked about Jamaal Charles, Reid said the All-Pro running back who went down in week six last season against the Chicago Bears with a torn ACL would return for training camp. The Chiefs head coach said Charles would meet with the team doctors but he believed he would be able to handle “all the football stuff” that was required of him during camp. However, Reid did say they wouldn’t push Charles at all for fear of re-injuring the Chiefs’ backfield star.

Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 6.35.01 PMReid was next asked about linebacker Justin Houston who it was revealed had damaged his ACL at the end of last season. While there wasn’t a tear in the ligament, it was reported to be “not functioning as intended.” This led to an off-season surgery which will delay the Chiefs’ all-time single season sack leader from returning to the field.

While Reid confirmed Houston would be at St. Joe for camp on Friday, he will not practice at all during camp.

Finally, Reid said the back-up quarterback position was wide open, and even invited a couple of reporters on-hand for the press conference to come and try out. That got a laugh.

That’s it for now. When we hear more, so will you!
