Arrowhead Adventures In Artic Weather!

Arrowhead Adventures In Artic Weather!

The Thursday Night Football game last week was incredible in so many ways. It is being called the greatest Thursday Night Football game ever! I could not agree more, but of course, that is subjective and I am not exactly a neutral contributor.

What is not subjective is that it was cold. The second coldest game in memory for me.

Before the game, I was asked by my friends who were making their first trip to arctic Arrowhead how to prepare etc.

Another couple of freezing home games are coming up, you may benefit from my self-proclaimed expertise as well.

  1. It is much colder at Arrowhead than it is in your front Kansas/Missouri yard. The place is nothing but metal and concrete. If you are comfortable as you get in your car, you probably aren’t dressed warmly enough.
  2. You need layers. Start with a wicking layer that is next to your skin, it will pull sweat from your body. Mountain climbers say “cotton kills” because it soaks up the sweat and keeps it close to your skin. So don’t throw on your cotton “Loudest Stadium in the NFL” tee. A regular nylon chiefs jersey works well.
  3. Move on to wool. Any 100% cotton sweater or other kind of wrap will work fine. Wool is the only material that will keep you warm when wet, an added security.
  4. Next a down coat. The more down the better. Down coats keep you toasty warm and “adjust” for the temperature. Ducks cannot put on or take off layers, you won’t need to either.
  5. The final layer must be waterproof, and windproof. I love Gortex but whatever you have or can get that is similar. A hood is a must. Gortex is awesome but the material itself gets cold, so you need that inner down layer to keep that away.
  6. A very warm wool hat. Most of the heat you lose is from your head. Do not wear a baseball style hat. A wool or acrylic stocking hat is a must.

Other Tips:

  1. Bring a piece of cardboard to put your feet on.
  2. Drink plenty of water. Your breath is warmed by spit in your mouth. You actually lose more water in extreme cold temps than in hot ones.
  3. Sign up for the “designated driver” free hot chocolate at the “Fans First” booths located around the stadium.
  4. Make sure you have a full tank of gas when you enter the gates.
  5. Buy the best tickets you can afford. The higher the seats… the colder you will be. There are very good deals on cold weather game seats right now no sites like Stub Hub etc.
  6. Make sure your wife or buddy or whoever goes with you dresses as warm as you. If you don’t say anything they probably won’t and you will have to deal with it.

Your Arrowhead Adventurer is ready for some cold regular and post season games! Make sure you are too!
