Last year I wrote some articles about an annual trip I take to Kansas City with one of my sons to see the Chiefs play in Arrowhead. I think this will be our sixth year since we started. This is about the point in the year where we start looking at the different home games to see which one we want to attend.
As part of the process, we look at the opponent, time/day of the game, and other activities in KC on the same weekend. Sometimes we also have to rule out weekends for other activities at home. I thought I would take some time in this article to let you know where we stand.
First – The Schedule
We get some good news and bad news here. The good news is all of the Prime Time games this season. It is great to see the Chiefs get some respect finally. However, the bad news is that these games are more difficult to attend. We need to rule out Monday & Thursday night games due to school. The Sunday night games aren’t optimal, but can be managed. With this in mind, we are limited to the games shown in Gold below.
Just based on opponents, I would rank them as – Steelers, Raiders, Eagles, Chargers, Bills, and Dolphins. Steelers will be billed as a rematch, of course, Raiders as rivals in the AFC West, and the Eagles as Andy Reid going up against his former team. After that, I don’t see much excitement.

Additional Attractions
In addition to the football game, we also like to find other attractions to see, such as other sports, local culture items, and/or sightseeing. This year it looks like we could catch a Sporting KC game the same weekend the Eagles are in town or a KC Mavericks hockey game when the Chargers visit in December. The Eagles and Steelers weekends have the Kansas City Renaissance Festival open at that time, which I remember visiting as a kid. (Who wouldn’t remember to giant turkey drumsticks.) The Bills, Raiders, Chargers, and Dolphins games will all have Country Club Plaza lit up with the popular Plaza Lights.
The only other factors would be ones that create a weekend conflict for these weekends. This year Air Force is playing Michigan in Ann Arbor (my older son is a Michigan fan for some reason) and it is on the same weekend as the home opener against the Eagles. Other than that we have Thanksgiving Weekend and Christmas Eve conflicting with the Bills and Dolphins games, respectively.
The Short List
At this point, the best games look like the Steelers, Bills, and Raiders. We are tentatively selecting the Pittsburgh as our game this year, with the other two as backups. We should have some nice weather in October for tailgating and seeing the city.
Most of all I hope we see a lot of this.
If you could only pick one, which game would you guys like to see? What are the reasons?
Until next week, there’s The Rub!
