ArrowheadOne: Chiefs Friday Notes and Quotes

There is always news but what is important which becomes an answer to all your questions, fulfills your prayers? I don’t have that answer but it brings to mind an episode of the TV Program “Taxi”, in which character “Jim Ignatowski” is asked a bunch of questions and he comes up with answers to all but the simple one. The questions were as such: How far is it from Manhattan to Timbuktu? Actor “Christopher Loyd’s” response had me rolling on the floor. it was a question even the low intellect TV viewers, such as myself, knew the answer to. Loyd’s response to his fellow’s ridicule when he didn’t come up with the right answer was something to the effect of “…you went to the well once’t too often.”

So now you know that my response to your questions, seeking the ultimate answers is likely for nought. And to think the reason I started watching the program was because of the theme song, a Jazz Tune by Bob James from his album “Touchdown.” You will have to accept the following. Or not.

First off an aside about Jameis Winston — taking wagers now, call me at BR-549 to lay your bet. Myself? I think he will shortly be looking at the unemployment line. Winston made a public apology which according to Tom Pelissaro was part of a negotiated settlement. He does not admit guilt, only that he was drinking and doesn’t remember everything. He is suspended for the first 3 games of 2018’s season.

Kahlil McKenzie — He comes from an NFL Family. His father, Reggie is the Oakland Raider’s GM, Reggie McKenzie. Since neither team is playing football on Thanksgiving day, I bet the discourse over the table and passed tater’s is going to be interesting come November. At least it makes an interesting note for the team that all Chief’s fans have a “love/hate” view about. If you doubt that this rivalry is the truly intense thing that it is, go back to yester-year, find the video of Ben Davidson, Len Dawson and Otis Taylor. It will whet the appetite for the younger crowd who can then catch up and catch on to “Raider Hater Day.”

Brett Veach has a video at Chiefs.com but the most important thing that I note from what Veach said is that he is very quick and has a chance to be a top NFL Guard. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that he might be in contention for snaps later in the year. All the pundits are saying it will take a year. What I see is a man who fits the physique of an NFL Guard, that has been around the NFL on the edges due to his father. I think he will be a quick study, fast learner and will be available during the current season for meaningful snaps.

Dee Ford — I will quote him here rather than myself or any of our regular contributors (whose commentary would likely be “bleeped”). Ford said this week: “…I can’t wait to get back out there and once again show people what I can do.”

Rummaging through twitter? I found myself attuned and tuned in to the Chiefs Cheerleaders in Jamaica. I will observe that there are some really nice…oh never mind. Let’s keep the topic about the game of football from here onward. No, I am not going to address the Cheerleaders filing suit about their paycheck amounts. After all, back in the day, I dated a Chiefs cheerleader. She called me up about 10 years ago to catch up. Never mind.

Alex Smith (No Skin off My Nose) — This is historical but going back to Alex Smith after the Chief’s season was over… He was written up in the Cleveland Plain Dealer by Kay Cabot, cleveland.com, who indicated that Dorsey was trying to work a deal to get Smith to Cleveland… this info apparently came to her from the NFL. When asked about it, Smith said that it was an anywhere but down opportunity. I had not heard this but Smith said at the time of the Super Bowl, when interviewed by Dan Patrick, that he hadn’t known about it and he hadn’t thought about it. No skin off my nose and the “Skin’s” are going to be a much improved 2018 team. Of course the players surrounding him will have to play “football.” I think he will be good for the franchise.

Back to the Chiefs: Kendall Fuller was in the news. He was interviewed by staff writer Matt McMullen. In this article, David Amerson was quoted when addressing Fuller: ““Kendall is a student of the game… I think it shows in his play. He’s just a fundamental cornerback.” Both corners are alumni of Virginia Tech (my niece just graduated from VT) this year. Reid and the defensive coaching staff moved Fuller all around. Fuller said of this: “I’m just doing a little bit of everything. I think that’s one thing the scheme kind of does – everybody has to do everything… You don’t go in there trying to learn one position. You go in there and learn what the corner is doing, what the nickel is doing, what the safety is doing, the dime and the backers. You have to learn how to do everything.”

All that I have heard thus far about Fuller is that he is going to be a top corner for the Chiefs.

About David Amerson — I have read all the downtrodden stories, critique, rating him an awful choice and so on — is just going to be something that ends up requiring “proof in the pudding” either way.

This year, he was released when his “team” signed two top corners. That was to be expected. I have become a “Veach Believer” so I am going with this. Of course a proper counter to my view of Veach would be, ya’ but David, you were a top “Dorsey Believer” too. Ya! Too True — I still am.

I am not saying this is the ultimate answer because I think that will come from the draft. I have no answer for why his snaps were reduced nor why his play suffered in 2017. I suspect that there was internal discontent and rancor in the club house. What ever it was, I do not think Amerson is going to repeat his 2017 play and will go back to his 2016 and before form. Sometimes in life, a change in scenery is a boon to the individual’s future. At least that was my personal experience both on the football field and in the Mainframe Software world.

Do I think Amerson is a replacement of the talent of Marcus Peters? Nope. But the Chiefs, having a top slot corner and two starting quality outside players should fair well in an improved defense.

Tyreek Hill — The NFL’s analyst, Daniel Jeremiah, got into the Chiefs case this past week. He wrote about Hill as being the “… Most Explosive Player in the NFL.” Prior to that, both he and Bucky Brook, on the NFL program “Move the Sticks” had a highly positive view. In that video, Brooks observed: “This is a guy that can get it done as a returner, a runner or a receiver – whenever he gets the ball in the open field, every defensive coordinator in the league holds his breath.”

With that sentiment I can certainly agree. Last up?

Sammy Watkins: The more I think about the ability to “move the sticks” in the aerial game with Patrick Mahomes under center, the more certain that I have become that Mahomes has two totally tough to shut down targets in Hill and Watkins. I can’t say how Mahomes will divvy up targets but that must have him salivating. I like the outlook of Watkins and his intent in the first place to become a “Chief”. Could it get to situation where we have something like 3 900 yard receivers on the field (Hill, Watkins and Kelce?).

“Once’t too often”

Ah, you might say, “David go find a sandbox to play in.” Please note my opening remark about Loyd’s response and with that I will take your advice and go find that “sandbox” for next week.
