As usual, there’s plenty to report on this week. So, let’s get to it.
The Chiefs Whack-A-Mole Offense
You know the kid’s game, it’s called Whack-A-Mole. The player of this game is given a rubberized mallet and the point is to knock down the Mole’s that pop out of the holes before they disappear again. Since they only stay in the up position for one second, you hardly have enough time to whack the mole on the head. You’ll still find this game today in older game arcades and in Chucky Cheese.
The point is, the Chiefs offense has become like this game in the sense that if you stop one player, another one has a great day. It makes it nearly impossible for a defense to stop all the talent the Chiefs have on offense. It looks like the only way for the Chiefs to get beat is if they beat themselves. Mostly, you have the head-Moles to thank for that.
National Football League Punishments
Marcus Peters was fined $12,154 this week for dunking a ball over the goal posts (and allowing the ball to hit the goal post when he did). In other news, Kiko Alonso was fined $9,115 for targeting the head of QB Joe Flacco (who broke out of the pocket and was considered a runner). So, $12K for touching and inanimate object… and $9K for endangering the life of another human? Sounds about right for a league that still penalizes those who break their drug policy more stringently than they do for Domestic violence. I was going to suggest that those in change of the NFL should “re-think” their fines… but that would assume thinking was already taking place. Maybe the owners should put that in the job description next time they choose a commissioner.
Kareem Hunt vs. Ezekiel Elliott…
I spoke with my cousin in Dallas this week and they’re sticking with the Cowboys to win this game. No surprise there but did agree with me that both defenses “suck” so this game may come down to… which offense can control the run game… and consequently, the time of possession. Although I think Zeke will likely have a better day since Dallas offensive line is much better than the Chiefs OL so while the game’s outcome could be swayed by the winner of that contest, there is one other aspect of the Chiefs offense that the Boys don’t have: a world class TE. Sure they still have Jason Witten, who will end up in Canton in all likelihood, but his best days are past and a slow Witten should not be able to beat a slow Derrick Johnson or for that matter, Dirty Dan Sorensen. If TE Travis Kelce goes off… look for red and gold to steal the show in Jerryland.
“You’ve got to know when to hold em”
Bret Veach appears to have held his cards at the trading deadline this week while many other teams were busy upgrading this rosters. Seattle got the OL help they needed badly by trading for Duane Brown with the Texans. Houston got CB Jeremy Lane and a 5th round pick plus a 2nd round pick. Though it looks like a nice haul for the Texans we know they’re going nowhere now with the recent ACL injury of rookie QB sensation Deshaun Watson. In the end, it looks like both teams made out.
But not the Chiefs.
Buffalo traded DT Marcell Dareus to the “Sacksonville” Jaguars who needed help stopping the run. Hmm, I wonder what other teams could have used help stopping the run. Of course the Chiefs could never (never is such a malleable word in the cap-tastic NFL) hav afforded Dareus and he had become troublesome for the team but I don’t think anyone in K.C. would have been unhappy to see the Chiefs make room on their roster for such a player.
There’s also the RB Jay Ajayi trade with the Dolphins shipping the player to the offense starved Philadelphia Eagles. Ooops… did I say starved? Wow… what a great move it would have been to see Kareem Hunt and Jay Ajayi in the same backfield.
Perhaps the biggest surprise move was seeing huge WR Kelvin Benjamin go from the Panthers to the Bills. C’Est la Vie… the Chiefs don’t really need a tall wide out in the red zone do they.
Here’s a list of the trades Brett Veach made for the Chiefs at this year’s deadline: ______ . Oh well, we don’t really need any extra players any way do we… I mean, it’s not like we’re about to make a Super Bowl run, right?
Dallas Texas: The Chiefs Return Home
Way too much is made of the Kansas City Chiefs getting their start in Dallas. Yes, their owner is still from Dallas but so what!? Let’s get over it. I’ve lived in Dallas. I like Kansas City so… I came home and live here now. Please, let’s move on.
Hali: Bang the Drum Slowly
Tamba Hali has returned just in time for the playoffs… err… for the Bye Week… err… for the 9th game of the season. Hmm, the way it sounded in August, Tamba Hali was ready to cook his coach over an open pit and sprinkle a few team mates in for good measure… BECAUSE… he didn’t get enough snaps in the playoff game vs. Pittsburgh. Listen, I’m a huge Tamba Hali fan and he’s not going to be playing this game much longer — in fact, I’m off the opinion that this is his last hurrah — so I’d love nothing more than to see him go out with a big bang and a championship ring. I had the realization earlier this year that Hali and Eric Berry had in all probability played their last game together back in January. If HC Andy Reid decides to bring Hali along slowly… very slowly… that’s all right with me. I still think he has the ability to be a better OLB than Dee Ford and if they can time his resurgence out so that he helps the Chiefs come playoff time… then give me some of that old time religion.
Chiefs Fans and Fatalism
Sam Mellinger, wrote a piece for the KC Star yesterday about how he believes — based on his countless emails, conversations, and social media observations of Chiefs fans — that the average K.C Chiefs fan is fatalistic about their success. While being the voice for Chiefs Kingdom in totality must be an awfully big burden to bear, I don’t believe that’s really possible. Even if he took a poll, he’d still only have a small sample of what Chiefs fans think. After all, Hillary was supposed to win based on polls right? I don’t know how old he is but, Mellinger must not have lived through the 70’s and 80’s because if you did… then you’d have a right to feel fatalistic about those years and those Chiefs teams.
.Raiders, Bolts and Broncos
The Oakland Raiders are visiting the Miami Dolphins tonight. While I don’t give the Raiders much of a chance the rest of the season, the Miami offense is in a state of blah right now ranking 30th in the league. The biggest problem the Raiders will face is the Miami defense which currently ranks #7 overall.
The Los Diego Chargers are resting this week. Bye-Bye baby.
The Denver Broncos find themselves getting physical against the Philadelphia Eagles, in Philly. I’d be very surprised if the Broncos were in this game past half time.
Of course our believed K.C. Chiefs are in Dallas today and this is a game that many are expecting to see a high scoring affair. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Chiefs handed the Cowboys a big whippin’.
Enjoy the games and Go Chiefs!
