Well, I guess Scott Pioli was right all along about DE Tyson Jackson,” he said with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. It’s hard to believe that the Super Bowl is here and that Tyson Jackson will be starting at defensive end for one of the teams.  Although, I never thought he’d win a Super Bowl — much less appear in one — before the Kansas City Chiefs would, I am pulling for the Atlanta Falcons but picking the New England Patriots.

Now that my meaningless pick is out of the way, let’s get down to some facts about the Super Bowl.

  1. We all know that the Hunt family coined the term “Super Bowl” but the first two Super Bowl games weren’t even known as the Super Bowl… even though the Super Bowl trophy is named after the man who coached the teams that won those games: Vince Lombardi.
  2. In the year after the Miami Dolphins went 17-and-0, they went to the Super Bowl again and beat the MInnesotaViking while QB Bob Griese threw a total of seven passes.
  3. This year, the winning players will each get $107,000 while the losers will get $53,000. To show how far the salaries for players has come sine the year 2000, Hall of Famer (newly crowned) Kurt Warner was league MVP and Super Bowl MVP in 1999 and was paid, $250,000 for the year. BTW, QB Bart Star was being paid $100,000 salary for a whole year.
  4. The next time the Chiefs win the Super Bow, it will be their fourth time winning a championship.

Hall of Fame Notes

I’m glad the Kurt Warner made it into the Hall. I don’t know that he really had the numbers to justify him being chosen but I’m glad anyway.  I’ve never been a Bronco fans but I’m happy for Terrell Davis and although I feel the same way about Davis’ numbers not be good enough to make the Hall, at least we can stop hearing the debate, “Should he be in the Hall?” Making the Hall of Fame as an owner should be something that comes when an owner steps away from the game, just like the players so, I’m not down with Jerry Jones making the Hall. Sure, he’s had a big impact on the business side of the game, helping to grow the whole league, but I don;t think that business success should not be the measure of whether or not an owner makes the Hall. The one player who did deserve the Hall was LaDamian Tomlinson. Congratulations to everyone who made it.

‘Men’ of the Year

I couldn’t agree more with the choice of “Men of the Year” in Larry Fitzgerald and Eli Manning.  I doubt that I will ever be a New York fans of any kind, but my heartfelt congratulations goes out to Eli Manning as well as Larry Fitzgerald.

One question before the big game… if Matt Ryan is the NFL MVP for 2016 — and I am totally behind that decision — then why isn’t the “Play of the Year” one that belongs to Eric Berry? Alright, it’s time to give your pick of the day? Who do you favor?
