Bittersweet: What Could Have Been Chiefs History

The season is finally officially over. The final game of the season was a great game to watch. Both teams displayed a ton of offense. This wasn’t a defensive showcase, but there was some prime defense when it counted. With seconds to go and the game on the line, the Eagles defense got to Tom Brady with a strip sack they recovered. The game was all but over at that point.

Heads – Heads – Heads – Heads

While Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the New England Patriots are a dynasty, they were beaten in this game. They trailed most of the game, taking the lead in the fourth quarter. It looked like another Patriot victory, sending the upstart Eagles back home with a loss. However, Nick Foles and the Philadelphia Eagles kept coming.

All game long, the Eagles played to win. They took chances and made the big plays. It looked like they were playing with house money from the coin flip, which they lost. Despite the pedigree of the Patriots, the Eagles let loose and were dynamic.

To me, it never seemed like the Eagles were predictable. They called plays that kept New England off balance. They challenged Belichick to stop them. They didn’t stop on third down and punt, they went for it on fourth. They called low probability, unexpected, school yard plays.

They beat the Patriots by being the Patriots. These are all things we have seen from Tom and Bill. Do the unexpected. Rely on the players to “do their job”. Don’t over think it. Just play.

Tails – Tails – Tails – Tails

The flip side to how fun this game was to watch is that it brought up visions of what the Kansas City Chiefs should have been. The head coach of the Eagles was our Offensive Coordinator. The quarterback was our back up QB.

We have as good, if not better, playmakers on offense. I repeatedly had visions of Tyreek Hill hauling in some of those passes and taking them to the end zone (instead of being tackled). Or, Kareem Hunt making the rushes the Eagles RBs made, if not longer.

I saw Nick Foles playing lights out. He never seemed rattled. Never seemed like he was overwhelmed or scared. He only seemed to be playing to win. He seemed to have trust in his receivers and his ability to make the play. He was throwing the ball in places most QBs don’t. Plus, he caught a touchdown pass.

It made me realize that Andy Reid is in his own way. What if he let Doug Pederson call plays unencumbered? What if he just played the role of Head Coach and let his coaching staff and players do their jobs? What if he played to win instead of playing not to lose? What if he trusted all the player to make plays and coaches to call the right game?

Could the Chiefs have gone to the SuperBowl? Could they have been victorious? Could they have achieved the greatness they display on paper?

I don’t think we will ever really know. It is just a topic for debate. The good and bad of Andy Reid. He can be an offensive genius. He is billed as a quarterback whisperer. He is noted as having no sense of clock management. He has proven he can have high win seasons, but not win the big games in the playoffs. So, where are we with Andy? When will he learn and grow? He is his own worst enemy.

What do you guys think? Did you see the ghost of Chiefsmas past/present/future?

Until next week, there’s The Rub!
